Looks like my original question has morphed into a different iPhoto issue. Otto responded:

"iPhoto originally used a normal folder system but since a few versions ago
iPhoto Library has been a "package". Unless you've moved it, it will be in
your Pictures folder. If you right-click > Show Package Contents, you can
see what's there.

When was you last backup and how did you do it?

Otto"

The only photos in visible after I Show Package Contents are from July. Nothing from January through June. I back up using a 1TB external hard drive. It has three partitions, one for everything on my computer, one for pictures and one for music. I thought having a separate partition for pictures would help in a situation like this, but now I realize that only the most recent iPhoto library is there. However, there are several previous Time Machine backups and I'll go through those until I find the iPhoto library that includes 2012 photos. Should be the backup before last week's.

I try to back up every 10 days, but with the electricity out, I had to go a little longer. If the suggestions I've read here don't work, I'll be back. Thanks for your assistance!

Debbi

I guess I could ask the publisher for evidence to back up its claims, but they seem to good to be true.

The claim: while only 3% of all stolen computers are ever recovered, the recovery rate for systems protected by PCPhoneHome or MacPhoneHome is claimed to be 99%.

Seems to me that all a thief would need to do is swap out the hard drive or do a secure erase to defeat this. Of course, the publisher doesn't state how the software works, and that may be OK. The website does say that the software sends an email to a user-configured email address whenever the protected computer connects to the internet. How would something like that interact with Little Snitch?

Does anyone here HAVE MacPhoneHome installed? Does anyone have personal stories?

Thanks so much,

Hello everyone.  I've run across something for the first time today.  I work for the Texas Prison Museum and take care of our digital files of pictures.  They are all on an external drive that I've used for several years and that no one else has access to.  I use an iMac running 10.7.4.  Today I was adding pictures to a rather large group with many sub folders.  In these folders there is something I'd not noticed previously: folders that either are titled "Documents" or "Folders", or "Developer".  None of these folders will let me select them.  When I click on one, nothing happens.  The other files in the folder with these files mentioned above all work as expected.  Does anyone know what these are?

Thank you in advance.

Well, I am embarrassed to say that I've figured this all out and the dummy in me caused this confusion.  The
"Folders" and "Documents" are the headings for the folders and documents.  Old age is catching up with me, I fear!  And the Developer is the heading that appears when I've copied files from a PC and a "Thumbs.db" file is included.  Sorry for the bother.

> I wanted to report that, along with many other Mac owners who will lose out massively if they upgrade to Snow Leopard or one of the silly names Apple has given to the latest version of their OS, I am getting Google messages that upgrades will no longer be supported because I am still using OS 10.5.8 Something to think about if you are buying an old machine.

Since I don't remember losing much of anything when I upgraded to OS 10.6, I am curious what you expect to "lose out massively"?

Operating systems, like species, adapt and change, or die out. Many of the ills people complain about in Windows can be traced to trying to maintain ongoing support of ancient and outdated versions, back to the dawn of time.
