Did you know that Apple provides the latest Canon drivers within it's system software? With your scanner turned ON, your image placed upon it's glass surface, open Preview App, then File/Import from Scanner.

My scanner starts scanning, and the preview scan window opens, I save it or edit it before saving the scan to my desktop (or wherever you want the scan saved).

You might have more issues if your installation timed out. But you don't need to install anything as the system handles drivers and Preview handles scans.

I advise you to boot into the repair mode (Restart+Holding Apple+R) if you use 10.8.4. Then repair your disk and repair preferences.

Vuescan may be very good but it costs several times the price of OS X.

I think he is talking about the program "Image Capture" which should be in your applications folder.

It seems you can now also use Preview and System Preferences > Print & Scan.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I DO have Apple's "Junk Mail Filter" turned on using mostly the default configuration; actually, I'm one level up from the defaults: if Mail.app catches something, I have it divert the message to the Junk folder, but there's still a steady stream (I'd guess more than 20 messages per day) of this stuff that reaches my inbox NOT caught either by my ISP or by the Mail.app Junk filter.

It still misses some. I even train FF and it misses the misses. I think
the spammers change daily.

However, I'm nervous about making training Mail.app's Junk filter as my "total fix" because just now I had a service tech at my home working on our security system. I gave a credit card number by phone to the central monitoring station; they sent an email confirmation to my email address; Mail.app diverted THAT email to my "Junk" Folder. As I mentioned earlier, I don't know how Apple's Junk Mail filter works behind the scenes; one guess is that the confirmation was sent from <noreply@thecompanysdomain.com> (not the real domain name, of course).

As I read your post, I get the sense that I can keep my current email address but somehow take advantage of gmail's sophisticated filtering? When I went from POP to IMAP I had a nightmare configuring the IMAP folders so that everything was available to all my Macs and iOS devices. Everyone told me then that gmail has a non-standard way of handling the INBOX folder that can create problems.

For all those suggesting "training"; that is very time consuming compared to
Gmail that works well.

For 5+ years it seems to catch every SPAM that comes to me and place in
SPAM without sticking my good stuff in SPAM even on the groups where I get
500-1000 pieces of mail a day from - I am on many groups.

I just mention it before people start spending money and time on something
where a FREE and no time option exists.

And it does support domain mail -- i.e. I own the domain @learnasp.com so
my mail from there is managed by gmail even without a gmail address.

I've been using Gmail for almost 8 years and also found that I get hardly
any spam, maybe 1 or 2 per week at most.
