ok...i backup my iPhone4 to two different WinXP Pro PCs...one to our desktop
PC when we're here at home and then to our notebook PC when we're on
vacation. like your situation the PC that is *not* currently being used (ie
the notebook when we're at home) also shows the apps as there but grayed
out. an Apple tech provided this unpublished work around to, for lack of a
better word, "restore" the grayed out apps on iTunes enabling the iPhone4 to
sync with iTunes and not lose any apps on the phone. whether this will work
in *your* situation is unknown so consider it carefully before giving it a
try. this *does* work, reliably and consistently, in *my* situation. my
iPhone is still on iOS 4.x and my iTunes is v10.3.1.55. i've not updated
either the phone or iTunes as i'm perfectly happy with the way each is
working and have no need for the upgrades...at this point in time.
1) be sure that iTunes is set to *not* automatically sync when connected.
*without* the phone connected to iTunes and the PC start iTunes and then
navigate to the following: EDIT:PREFERENCES:DEVICES. be sure to CHECK the
box labeled: Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically.
click OK.
2) connect your phone. when iTunes recognizes your device *right* click on
your phone's name in the left colum and select BACKUP. doing this before
you do anything with iTunes is always a good idea. i actually take this
step a bit further in that i save all previous backups in separate folders
within Windows. the backup files are located at C:\DOCUMENTS AND
SETTINGS:\your login name\APPLICATION DATA\APPLE COMPUTER\MOBILESYNC\BACKUP.
before doing a BACKUP i move the previous backup file into a folder i create
named with the date that backup occured. for example, if the most recent
backup was done on january 5, 2012 i would create a folder called
2012-01-05. i would then move the backup from that date into that folder.
by doing this i have backups of my iPhone that can be used to restore my
phone in case of disaster. i leave the most recent backup in it's default
location.
3) leave your phone connected. after you've backed up your phone click
APPS. be sure that the SYNC APPS box is *unchecked*. your apps will
populate the box on the right but they should be grayed out. click SYNC
APPS. a dialogue box will pop up essentially asaking if you're really sure
you want to do this as all existing apps on your phone will be replaced with
the apps in the iTunes lbrary. click SYNC APPS. this will cause all of the
grayed out apps to be, well, 'un-grayed out' and the SYNC APPS box will now
be checked. you'll also see two boxes in the lower right corner...REVERT
and APPLY. *if* you click REVERT your APPS will go back to being grayed out
and the SYNC APPS box will be unchecked.
4) read this paragraph *before* doing anything. click APPLY. this will
start the SYNC operation. count to 5 and then *CANCEL* the sync operation
on your phone by sliding the cancel bar from left to right. it will take
30-45 seconds for the cancel command to catch up in iTunes but when it does
the apps in the iTunes box will match the apps on your phone. you can now
do a regular sync.
to repeat myself this unpublished work around works each and every time in
my situation which is not the same as what you're experiencing. i'll bet it
solves your problem but try it at your own risk. you might want to visit or
call an Apple store to see if there is a different solution.
good luck to you.

Yes, the apps are there but greyed.

Found the answer!
When I updated iTunes it changed the settings in "Restrictions"
I have now reset it and everything now works ok.
I am going to print out this page for future reference - so thanks a lot for taking the trouble to help.

The Woz on Siri, iPhone 4S battery life and Android beating iOS on n

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: The Woz on Siri, iPhone
4S battery life and Android beating iOS on navigation and voice
commands via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 1/16/12
Journalist Dan Lyons (aka Fake Steve Jobs) filed this report with The
Daily Beast on Saturday which highlights Steve Wozniak's thoughts on
the iPhone 4S's widely reported battery woes (that didn't go away with
iOS 5.1 Beta 3):
With the iPhone, something happened with the new OS or the new phone,
and it just started running through the battery so fast. I've had a lot
of issues with things I have to turn off just to save the battery life.
Wozniak, 61, who co-founded Apple with Jobs in 1976, also has gripes
with Siri. The engineer thinks Siri is cool, but at times impractical
compared to Android voice action. This is mostly due to Siri's
architectural reliance on network connectivity which is needed in order
to get things done.
I have a lower success rate with Siri than I do with the voice built
into the Android, and that bothers me. I'll be saying, over and over
again in my car, 'Call the Lark Creek Steak House,' and I can't get it
done. Then I pick up my Android, say the same thing, and it's done.
[...] On the 4S I can only do that when Siri can connect over the
Internet. But many times it can't connect. I've never had Android come
back and say, 'I can't connect over the Internet. [...] Plus I get
navigation. Android is way ahead on that.
Apple is thought to be creating own navigation and mapping solution
stemming from its three mapping-related acquisitions: C3 Technologies
and Poly9 in 2010 and Placebase a year earlier. Wozniak is also good
friends with Andy Rubin who heads the Android project and thinks
"there's more available [on Android] in some ways".
Although Apple didn't detail Siri, its voice recognition and artificial
intelligence systems run on Apple's servers rather than the phone
itself. Siri may also infringe old Excite patents, said to be changing
hands soon as a valuable asset to compete with Siri. In case you've
been wondering, the iPhone remains Wozniak's primary phone. He loves
"the beauty of it" and is first to recommend it to friends, but he's
sometimes left wanting the iPhone "did all the things my Android does".
The people I recommend the iPhone 4S for are the ones who are already
in the Mac world, because it's so compatible, and people who are just
scared of computers altogether and don't want to use them. The iPhone
is the least frightening thing. For that kind of person who is scared
of complexity, well, here's a phone that is simple to use and does what
you need it to do.
That being said, Wozniak never shied away from admitting that he uses
Android phones on a daily basis, in addition to his iPhone. The famous
geek even received his Galaxy Nexus before the rest of the United
States (although he likes the Motorola Droid Razr better). Note that
Wozniak is also a vocal critic of today's smartphone design and is
sometimes misquoted.
For more comments by Wozniak concerning the Apple vs. Google
competition, check out this post over at our sister blog 9to5Google.
The Woz was previously quoted predicting Android will win smartphone
wars, although he hopes Google's platform will never beat the iPad. He
is currently chief scientist for storage startup Fusion-io, but would
consider a return to Apple, if asked.

iMessage problem

My daughter just got an iPhone 4S from work. I also have a 4S. Whenever I send her a text it first seems to go out via iMessage, but when I look later, it says sent as a text message. I am in Vermont and she is in California. Could this make a difference? iMessages to my friends in state go out just fine.
Does anyone else see the same thing happening? What could be the problem? Does it matter that I have a WIFI connection as well as 3G? Seems unlikely.

Does your daughter have iMessage turned on? Look at settings> messages>
iMessage. Sometimes I send messages to folks that I know have iMessage and
it goes SMS anyway.

iMessage requires some kind of Internet connection. WiFi, or cell data like 3G Edge etc. if the iDevice on the other end doesn't have that connection at the time you send the message it will send as a text. Including the iDevice being off at the time you send the message.

wierd itunes issue...

Anyone having a sudden issue from their computers not being able to connect to the itunes store? Appears to be a sudden problem with my network.
My PC can't connect, but when I VPN to a client network, it connects fine. Neither iPad or iPhone can connect when on Wifi.
Sounds wierd and I am hitting brick walls here. I've tried the iTunes diagnostics and get the "secure link to itunes store failed" error.
I tried netsh winsock reset once in the past few days. Worked once, but not since then. Sounds like some new port or security issue, but I can't figure it out.

I have had this sort a crap happen quite a bit. Some locations on the internet connect fine and some don't. I have found that a reboot of the DSL modem or Cable modem and router usually take care of it with having to reboot your computer.

yeah i've done multiple reboots of both (and my computer)
it's weird because when i try and do a
"pathping itunes.apple.com" command, it stops one hop short but when i do it connected via VPN through a work VPN, it completes the last hop
the odd thing when i run the iTunes Diagnostics is the only thing that fails is
"Connection attempt to browsing iTunes store was unsuccessful. the network connection timed out"
it says all the other connection attempts were successful.
wierd.
