I just bought some Apple genuine cords from macsales.com for only a few dollars each and they are all working brilliantly.
I have tried the non branded ones and never really had any luck with them.

<< I am a bit disappointed, though.>>
I was disappointed too when my charging cord split and frayed within a
few months of purchasing my iPhone 3G. A few months earlier Apple Care
had just replaced the charging cord on my new iPod. I thought the
connection was faulty. Nope. Apple Care said it was the cord like they
were expecting me to call about it.
Two in a row was really disappointing.
My iPhone 4 is a year old and the cord shows no hint of damage.
I think some cords are faulty just like some electronics are faulty;
and cars. I think manufacturers know a percentage of their products
will fail and deal with it via extended warranties.
Save your money, get a free, replacement cord. It's fast. You can call
Apple Care, wait for a new cord and send back the damaged cord all
within 5 days. Take control, call Apple Care.
<<Apparently, it is also easy to avoid damaging them.>>
It is also easy to get a faulty cord. What makes you think we have
misused our cords to damage them.

Just that no failures have occurred in about 8 of them in my experience over several years.
Personal anecdotal evidence, in other words.

Overdrive question

I have an account with my local library and can only check out a book
for two weeks. Is this the norm? I can't read them that fast and I'm
not given the option to renew.

I also have overdrive but my option says 21 days. There was a drop down menu with other options for shorter time periods.

If you're talking about downloadable books using Overdrive, yes, this is the length of time my local library allows. The book disappears after 2 weeks.

THe checkout time is set by each library. Mine checkout for 3 weeks. OverDrive does not allow for renewals - you have to check it out again.

It seems that 14 days is the norm.
You may not be able to get it right away if there is a waiting list, but you should be able to get on the list again and wait your turn.

I am reading a large book now and it just expired on me last night and I'm half way through it.
I use live-brary.com in conjuntion with Overdriveto download my books from my local library and I was able to order it again instantly.

See if your library allows you to download via the Kindle app. That way if
you don't read it all before it disappears at least your last page read can
be synced once you are able to download it again.
Also, when I go into my overdrive account on my laptop it allows me to
change the loaner period from 14 days, which is the default, to 21 days.

A couple of days ago I noticed that the built-in app "Stocks" no longer shows on my iphone 4S. I cannot find it listed in the itunes folder on my computer. When I synced the iphone with my computer, it did not reload it. I did not delete it (at least not intentionally).
What to do now?

An iPhone 3G can be upgraded to a maximum of iOS 4.2.1.
> Would it brick the phone?
No.
> He wants new version of some software and I don't want to get him a new phone unless I have to.
I presume it's AT&T, and probably old enough to be eligible for a minimum-cost upgrade. AT&T will sell you an iPhone 4 for $100, or an iPhone 3GS for $0.99 , with a renewed-for-2-years contract.
Either model can run iOS 5
