I didn't have Find my Phone set up as it was an older ipod touch. I'm
going to probably go to the police station today and file a report and to
the school.
I did find a URL that allows you to log in to Apple and see all of your
registered devices.
http://support.apple.com/ kb/HT2526
Click on 1. "My Support Profile".
I have the serial number now so I am prepared to prove it's my son's if we
can find it.
Thanks everyone.

I tried that site earlier but it only registers two of my devices: my current iPhone 4S and the iPod Touch I lost 3 years ago. Does not list my iPhone 3GS which got lost last week, my iPad and the iPod classic I gave to my sister.
When I tried to register the unlisted devices, it says "You already registered this device."
Weird.

i would suggest that you obtain the necessary receipts and/or S/N to
establish ownership and then report the robbery to the young thug's parents. if that doesn't produce the necessary results report the robbery to the police agency having jurisdiction where the offense took place.
good luck.

One of the problems with police reports and insurance claims is that most police departments do not respond in the way you want (minor property crime is not treated like more serious stuff) and insurance policies usually have a deductible that exceeds the iPhone cost (even those policies with special riders or coverages at enhanced premiums).
So my main question in this area is what is the specific process for disabling or locking a stolen iPhone. Suppose you had a means to disable and also to insert some code such that when the thief took the phone in for repair it could be confiscated until proof of ownership is shown. Do Apple or 3/4G services place the iPhone serial number on the cash register receipt?

Apple summarizes this better than I could:
> If you misplace your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, the Find My iPhone app will let you use another iOS device to find it and protect your data. Simply install this free app on another iOS device, open it, and sign in with your Apple ID. Find My iPhone will help you locate your missing device on a map.You can then choose to display a message or play a sound, remotely lock your device, or erase your data on it.

iPhone -- Settings -- General -- About
Scroll down until the serial number and other ID info is displayed

I went to school and talked with the principal and gave her the serial
number for the ipod. She talked to the boy who took my son's iPod touch. He
told all kinds of stories until she told him that I'm gonna press charges.
Then he admitted to taking it but says my son gave it to him. I told her
he's lying. She told him that if he doesn't have it in her hands by 8:30
tomorrow that I'm pressing charges.I told her that he grabbed it from my
son's hands and ran away with it and later refused to give it back. She
has a video of the lunch room and she's gonna watch it. If he did snatch
it (I believe my son), then he's in trouble for bullying. She said that
she's contacting his parents either way and if he doesn't return it, she's
gonna write him up theft and try to make them re-imburse me for it.
I'm hoping that he's scared enough to bring it back. What kind of kid is
this that just takes what he wants without regard for others. he's around
13 to 14 years old and he has to know better.
I'll know more tomorrow.

If you log the serial number in Contacts, that gives the S/N in two
places. The other is Settings/General/About panel, I think I have that
right. To recover a lost iPhone, I would think an independent S/N
source like a Sales Invoice would be more convincing.

Forget the if's, I would write him up anyway. It is time kids realize their actions have consequences! Not necessarily bringing charges, but tell the parents & have him on record at school.

Can this be done: through find my phone can one cause it to ring tones either continuously or on a short silent + long noise cycle. Or completely silence all sound.

Well you could do a process of elimination. I know that I've seen linksys that show what devices have connected and their Macs. Mark off the touch's that you have and record the remaining touch Mac address

I message is an Apple message system that sends messages between iPhones
and iPads as data. They do not count against your SMS messages. I message
will work over WiFi when you do not have a cell signal. When you send a
message, SMS will be green and iMessage will be blue.

SMS is sent as a "Short Message Service" text, using your text plan.
iMessage is sent as data (140 characters = 140 bytes) using your data plan.
Let's say you're paying $10/month for 1000 texts.
1000 texts is a *maximum* of 140,000 characters.
Including some overhead, let's say 150,000 bytes, or 0.15 Megabytes.
At $15 for 200 megabytes of *data*, that costs well under $0.02 for 1000 iMessages.

This past Sunday my wife and I took the iPhone plunge and are now learning (well, trying anyway) the arcane mysteries if our by now beloved iPhones. We are blessed by history - Mac users since the B&W Mac SE. We were early adopters of the iPod Touch and the iPad and now late adopters to iPhone which we can actually talk to. My only so far problem with Siri is she always misspells my daughters name - it is Micaela and Siri can't find Mycala. Tomorrow we are scheduled for an iCloud class. So far I have noted that iCloud deletes individual emails when I delete on one device. I sometimes like to archive certain messages on one device and not on the others. So far we are fortunate in that our Mac computers are G4s and G5s of PowerMac CPUs which can't run either Snow Leopard or Lion. But I would like to know a work around for controlling iCloud.

I don't believe there is a work around, just mark the individual email as unread.

I get double events too, but I am not sure if I should rely on the cloud calendar alone or the calendar on my mac. I find it rather confusing. If I turn one off, some of my appointments don't show up. if I turn the other off, same thing happens. Lately I sync both to the cloud and my mac. I guess I am still leery about the cloud.
When I use my iPhone to schedule events is the cloud more reliable to get the info into my mac?

I thought it was a manual choice whether to back up via the cloud or manually via the computer. I did both the other day just to hedge my bets. There is a setting for that in itunes when you plug in your phone. I think it is under the general heading, but I'm not sure at the moment.
I wish one could back up to both at the same time, but apparently not.

To help customers determine which data plan best matches their needs,
AT&T has helpful tools atwww.att.com/dataplans – including a data
calculator where customers can estimate usage for their typical data
activity. Once smartphone and tablet customers are on a plan, AT&T
keeps them informed of their usage levels by sending usage alerts as
they consume data within their plan. For example, a smartphone customer
with AT&T DataPlus 300MB will receive a text message when they consume
65 percent of their data bucket, plus two additional alerts as they
approach the 300MB provided with their plan.
"Customers are using more data than ever before," said David
Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer
Markets. "Our new plans are driven by this increasing demand in a
highly competitive environment, and continue to deliver a great value
to customers, especially as we continue our 4G LTE deployment."
Customers are encouraged to keep their device's Wi-Fi turned on because
data usage over Wi-Fi does not count against a customer's monthly data
plan. As an added value, AT&T smartphone and tablet customers have
access at no additional charge to AT&T's 29,000 Wi-Fi hotspots
nationwide – the nation's largest Wi-Fi network.** Customers can get
more information at www.att.com/wifiaccess.

* Plans are for 30 days and automatically renew every 30 days, unless
you cancel service prior to the start of the 30 day renewal. Overage
rates only apply to postpaid tablet plans – not session based pricing –
and include: $14.99 for 250MB with AT&T DataConnect 250MB; and $10 per
additional gigabyte with AT&T DataConnect 3GB and AT&T DataConnect 5GB.
** Largest based on company branded and operated hotspots. Access

Tethering disconnects-Verizon

I have iPhone 4s with Verizon tethering data plan which I use with my Macbook Pro. It has worked flawlessly until this past week when I started getting disconnects and then when I try to reconnect I get a "time out" report and it will not connect for a period of time. Is this an iPhone problem or a Verizon problem? I will turn the phone off and then back on and that sometimes allows me to connect but that doesn't work every time. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Thanks
Ray

I have only questions -- no answers.
How are you tethering? Bluetooth, USB, Wifi?
Have you run through your whole data allotment?
Is Verizon speed-throttling you because of high data use?
