Provided you have not turned on sync within Chrome using the same account, the startup screens may be set differently. Also, Google has a facility within Chrome to start up with a picture as the background of the home screen. There is usually a link at the lower left of the screen with the graphic to change this.

ID theft

Posted by: "Blaine Gordon" blainegordon@ymail.com   blainegordon@ymail.com

Tue Jan 17, 2012 7:00 am (PST)

I am one of the victims of ID theft. It was on the news that tablets and phones were the easiest for hackers to hack. My stolen debit card was only used to make purchases through the Apple store. I emailed billing and the charges where removed. My bank was also notified and they cancelled my debit card and reissued a new one. The interesting thing is that Apple suggested that I not use a credit or debit card but instead buy myself gift cards to handle my purchases. They are readily available at most grocery stores and Walmart. I have been doing this for a while and haven't had any unexpected large purchases anywhere. It is likely that 99.percent of users on Apple are safe but for the 1 percent like me, gift cards.are a good solution.

That wasn't the problem. They are visable in the CS5 filters menu, but not
in the library..application support.

Jeannie -

Originally you stated that you were unable to locate the Library folder.

The *ONLY* Library folder on the Mac that is not normally visible under Lion is the user's Library.

However, that is NOT the Library that is supposed to have the Topaz plugins folder in it. It (the Topaz folder) is supposed to be located in the top-level (normally visible) Library folder.

Howdy.

There are two Application Support folders.

You may find Adobe things in one or the other.

Library/Application Support/Adobe

Users/your account/Library/Application Support/Adobe

If you are running, Apple made the Users/your account/Library folder
invisible.

It's easy to make it visible. You can do so by selecting the Finder's
Go menu. If you press the Option key your Users/xxx/Library folder
will become visible. (It can also be put in the Sidebar where it will
stay visible.)

Hi Anna,
Interesting stuff from you on this very confusing subject - thank you.

I'd just like to say that Oneal _was_ using UTF-8 in his earlier mails
(I checked), but not in the one from which you quote my quoted
sentence. However on my display (Mac OS 10.6.8/Firefox 9.0.1 set to
UTF-8) his quote of my text appeared OK. However your view and your
quote of my text on his mail was not.
I do not understand that!

regards,
Ian

This seems to be a never-ending issue. A few months ago we tried to resolve
weird stuff happening when someone used ellipses (...) and I don't think we
found a reliable solution.

Otto,

I copied your passage and pasted it into a word processor so I could examine what you seem to have put inside the brackets. Your ellipse appears to be three dots and not an ellipse which would have appeared had you pressed Option + ";" on the British or the U.S. extended keyboard.

Could you be so kind and type again a genuine ellipse so that we can test if it transmits normal? I remember it used to turn up as Σ (= Greek sigma) by some Lion users (or was it Snow Leopard? I can't remember anymore.)

Anyway, I'll do the same test now. Here is an ellipse: … and here are three dots: ...

If somebody sees other characters then please tell us in what browser + version that happens and in what OS.

Otto, you are a Brit, aren't you? What kind of keyboard layout do you use? I just took a look at the British one and I see only disadvantage compared to the U.S. Extended. The British keyboard layout on the Mac doesn't even have thorn and eth so there is no way to write Old English with the British keyboard layout.

I'm American, and use a US keyboard. Where are the thorn and eth keys
on it? I looked at both PopChar and Keyboard Viewer to no avail, at
least not with this font.

Yes, I'm a Brit and I have a UK keyboard with UK mapping (but I often play
with others). I typed it as 3 dots only because I couldn't remember the key
combo. What are "thorn" and "eth"? Anyway, here's 3 dots followed by an
ellipsis (although surely this *must* have been typed as 3 dots on an
actual typewriter?).
... ...

I'll see if I can find the thread from last year. I remember the sigma but
it wasn't the whole story.

You obviously have nothing to do, and all day to do it.

Why would you want to ruin Chalkduster (which is one of my all time favorite fonts) by making it bold? Chalkduster doesn't have a bold, it only comes in regular only, if you look at it in FontBook. I't is basically bold to begin with.

Take a course in typography and figure out how to create it yourself, if you want to make it heavier.

I was playing around nothing deleterious presumably with one of my Mail folders. All I did was change from a Read designation to an Unread designation. According to my Mail setup parameters, that action produces a number beside my Mail folders name that corresponds to the number of emails that have been newly marked as 'unread'.

Upon opening a few 'unread' emails, the emails materialized, however they were all blank. I clicked Rebuild which did not produce any reaction. Normally a spinning-gear icon shows.

I did a Safe Boot and checked my Mail folder. All emails were blank there. Returning to the usual reg-op mode, I again clicked folder Rebuild, which this time showed the spinning-gear icon. All formerly blanked emails were returned to my Mail folder in their correct state.

Heres my problem: My SuperDuper! backup took a shade under two hours to complete, which is nearly as long as an initial backup takes. Normal SD! backups usually take a dozen minutes. My Time Machine backup also took a hugely long time after my Mail screwup.

What took so long? Thanx. Oneal

I really apologize for the trouble that I caused the entire group - to the point that my posts were even called "a troll". I requested folks to suspend the discussion until I found a little time to get the job done, since I was confused in how to sort this out. I'll say that I have a very meagre understanding of the terminal commands in OS X. And thus it took me a little while to figure this out.

That said, it turns out, that not only do the later 2011 Macbook Pro's ship without thumb drives, the Recovery Partition is doubly hidden. In one generation of the OS X Lion builds, only the BaseSystem.dmg file is hidden (I won't say Apple hid it, because some folks would find it personally pointing at them), and in the later builds (which fortunately or unfortunately I am in possession of), even the Recovery HD partition is hidden.

So, if you follow the discussion that Harry pointed me to, you'll end up executing the following two commands in Finder.

$ diskutil list
$ diskutil mount /dev/disk0s3

This gets one to the point of mounting the Recovery HD Volume in Finder, but one is not able to find the BaseSystem.dmg file mentioned in the Apple Discussions Forum. I spent an hour with the Apple engineer over Phone Support, but they did not reveal to me that the file is hidden. They continued to mention that OS X Lion is available as a download using the recovery partition method, using Command + R to fire it up while booting and recommended that one must wait for the download to complete. Add to it, the thumb drives are not available in India yet.

Anyway, I did a little research at my end, and we need to execute one more command to unhide the BaseSystem.dmg file, for it to show up in the Finder. This is

$ sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg

You're asked for the administrator password to the system, and voila, you're done unhiding the file you need. Post that, go ahead and put it up in Disk Utilities, and write it to a memory card, a flash drive or burn it to the disk, just the way you would with the InstallESD.dmg file.

At the end of it, I'll thank everyone once again for their invaluable support, and also those who bring priceless value to the group, and some who go beyond that priceless value as well.

Regards,
Arjun

I recollect a recent post about Garageband and I am looking forward to using Garageband very soon, would like to have it included in the bundle (hopefully without downloading it - hehe)

Arjun,

I'm glad that you finally got things sorted out. I wasn't aware that the file was hidden in your particular instance.

Yes, the command you used to reveal the file is a handy one. I used the same command sequence to permanently 'unhide' my library directories.

I can understand your frustration at the situation. No biggie, that's what this group is here for.
