Interesting! After searching in all my folders (twice) and not finding it, I looked once more tonight and voila, there it was. However, I know where spotlight is but not how to use it. It's in settings and is checked, but how do you use it?

If you are sending to someone using an iPhone, iPod or iPhone then it will
try and use iMessage before sending as a text message - to stop this turn
this off in the iMessage settings on your phone. If it is sent using text
messaging services because a connection cannot be made with the Apple
servers then charges will apply.
If you are sending a message to a phone number and you know the receiver
does not have an iOS device then this will be charged for by your carrier,
be it SMS or MMS.

OK, I found a preference and turned off iMessage because everytime I thought I was texting my son, it was iMessage and it was using data which is same as using my date since he is on my plan. Very confusing if you ask me.

There should be more options. I do not mind if it automatically sends as SMS but not for international texts. Apple did not give us much options.

It does if the receiving party does not have data signal. Happened to me many times. It only prompts you if you're the one who doesn't have internet connection. Not an issue for local texts. But expensive for international ones. So I went back to Kik or WhatsApp for friends abroad.

Since iOS 5 was released.
> If I use WIFI, I am using SMS is that correct?
iMessage can also use either cellular or Wifi.
> Even if I use WIFI, but I'm texting a non apple user is it still SMS? or is it I message.
You can only iMessage from an iDevice using iOS 5.x to another iDevice using iOS 5.x, and then only if both users have it turned on and configured (a one-time tack for each device).
> If one of my family members is on my contract with AT&T but uses an Android phone, are our messages not SMS?
Android cannot iMessage, so those will always be "standard" SMS text.
> If I am using the G3 network it becomes Imessage, is that correct and uses up the data plan?
Both iMessage and standard SMS texts can go over either Wifi or cellular (3G) networks.
> If I am using the G3 network when I am out of the house, but am texting to an apple user, is it still sms or is it imessage?
It could be either, depending on how the Apple devices are set up.
> Was it announced somewhere? When did this differentiation in texting start?
It was announced with the introduction of iOS 5.
> This is as easy to understand as my phone bill or cable bill.
I am surprised your phone and cable bills are this easy to understand.

If you are already paying for unlimited texting (i.e., standard SMS texts messages), and you desire to CONTINUE to pay in that manner, then I suppose you should turn off iMessaging.
However, since 1000 iMessages cost no more than about $0.02 (two CENTS) in data charges, then on the one hand perhaps you shouldn't be too concerned about the costs, and on the other hand, perhaps you can consider reducing the amount of money you spend (to get unlimited texts), and SAVE money every month by utilizing the (almost free) iMessage service even more.
Try leaving iMessaging turned on, and check after a couple of months to see if the number of text messages that AT&T tells you you're making each month goes down significantly -- perhaps significantly enough to allow you to reduce how much you pay AT&T.

Now all your texting is going against your texting plan. If you turn the iMessage option back on, and you have a WiFi connection, then you are using the WiFi internet connection, not on your phone, to send the message.

Texting is not part of AT&T's or Verizon's data plans, it is part of their texting plans.
And if she is connected by WiFi, then with iMessage on, then if she is texting with someone else with iOS 5, then she is not using any of her cell phone texting plan.
For most people in North America, their home internet connection is cheaper than cellular texting, and if they are using a public WiFi hotspot, then it is free. In 99% of the cases, it is cheaper than cellular texting.

Bill; I travel a lot and my wife and I use iMessage quite a bit & since I don't have a text plan I pay close attention to when my iMessage becomes a text. And I have never been prompted when iMessage fails and is sent as a text. While I can't be 100% I would have to think in all the times at least one or would have been on my end.

Settings - messages - send as SMS - off
Will not allow sending as SMS at all.
Even with this on I get failures all the time of receiving party not
being able to receive iMessage and asking if I want to send as SMS /
mms. And I have unlimited messaging on AT&T. Unless feature acts
differently on Verizon / sprint.
Sent from a mobile device, please ignore any auto corrected or

I guess now I know it is a new thing. But this sounds like another way for someone to make more money and for the consumer to unknowingly spend more money in some cases. I don't remember reading about this when I upgraded, but it's possible it was int he fine print somewhere. I have too much to sort thru to read all the little print, but from what I did read, I saw nothing about this.
