Just a question.

Have either of you actually tried to SETUP an iCloud account?

Every time I try to use my iThings to access iCloud, iTunes or App store, I'm told my ID a/o password is invalid and am sent through the same loop. I have the Apple ID & password saved in all those devices for references.
I have resorted to going through Apple support, who condescended with the warning they will only do that once a year.
Now, I can get there on my iMac, but the iPad and Touch are denied. So everything has to go through the iMac.

Make sure you're using the correct password.

John, if you have set it up several times, then it is possible that you have several Apple IDs.

Alan, you also probably have several Apple IDs.

This has been a on going problem with Apple IDs.

I had set them up for AppleCare, Discussion Forum, App Store, Mac.com, & Developer Connection.

I have managed to get my various IDs down to two, both with the same username. Apple now wants the usernames to be a email address.

I may not have asked this question as well as I could have, so I will try again.

Although iCloud uses your AppleID, you still need to go to iCloud.com and setup an iCloud account using your AppleID and password.

When I try to login to iCloud, it asks me "Create An Account" or "Login".

I use Login, because I have previously created an iCloud account.

If you have not, then you will need to BEFORE you can login to your iCloud account.

If you have previously had a MobileMe account, you will need to login to that account and transfer it across to iCloud.

As to the iCloud account not working on your current iDevices, are you using iOS 5? I am fairly sure that iOS 5 is necessary to use iCloud.

I never had to go to the website and set an account up. Everything was done from the iCloud preference pane when I first got it.

Yes, I do have several: an Apple account id, an iTunes id, an App Store id, and a Face Time Id. None of these will work with iCloud; although they work with their respective entitities. My Apple account id is not an email address, but my others are, and iCloud requires an email address. When I attempt to change my Apple account username to my email address, nothing changes. If I really needed the iCloud capability/service, I would have been on the phone with apple the first time I was unable to solve this problem.

Thank you John for your reply; there is some (small) comfort in knowing one is not alone with this problem!

Brent, I think you might have put your finger on the cause. Originally I had an Apple ID (for App Store and Developer Connection) which goes back some years. Specifically it was AppleID == 'alanfry'; with 'Number1' password.

Attempting to create an iCloud account, a dialog came up insisting I change the ID to my email address with a new password. Dutifully I did exactly that and now have AppleID == 'ajf@afco.demon.co.uk' with 'Number2' password. That new ID was accepted by 'App Store'.

Following your email this morning I find that both old and new Apple IDs (with their respective passwords) get me into 'App Store' equally well. Developer Connection comes up with a sign-in dialog with the old (ie 'alanfry') AppleID and Password, which still works. So you're dead right -- I have at least two AppleIDs and two Apple ID passwords lurking in Apple's records.

Going back now to 'appleid.apple.com' it gives as one of the options 'Manage your Apple ID' and a button to sign in. If I enter the old ID ('alanfry') and Number1 password, up comes a page with my full name, the old Apple ID ('alanfry') and my primary email address (marked in green 'verified' with a tick). Down at the bottom is a button instructing me to make my Apple ID the same as my primary email address. This button was of course the one I used (yesterday) to change the old ID ('alanfry') to the new ID ('ajf@afco.demon.co.uk').

If on the other hand I go to 'appleid.apple.com' (again to 'Manage my account') and enter the new AppleID and password I get the error message 'Your Apple ID or Password was entered incorrectly' (which it wasn't). Nevertheless that very same ID and Password gets me into the App Store. But neither the old ID nor the new ID allow me to create an iCloud account.

How does one get out of this mess? I would like to delete everything and make a clean start which would enable me (as Apple promise) with just one Apple ID to get into App Store, iCloud, Developer Connections and so forth. How did you 'get your various IDs down to two'? And how can one get it down to just one which works everywhere?

My apologies for the length of this message.

Alan Fry

Right: I have just been to 'www.icloud.com' and entered my new Apple ID and password which it accepted. It told me to go to 'System Preferences->iCloud', which I did. As before the only option is to enter and Apple ID and Password, and as before it still rejects the Apple ID. So why does 'www.icloud.com' accept and System Preferences->iCloud reject the self same Apple ID and Password I wonder?

Is anybody here familiar with Mac software that allows people to hold a

I have done some searches without finding anything.

Assign each person a number and use a random number generator. There
are several on the app store, many free.

I would use Nisus Writer Pro for this. Write all the names as a vertical list and then let a macro highlight randomly the winner. You could also include an introductory text such as "And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner is …" and print it out in color and with special fonts together with the name (depends on the situation, of course.)

Yet again Anna, you are expecting Address Book and iCal to do far more than they are designed to do.

Relationships between information is not what address book and iCal are designed for.

Move on and find something that does what you require (or even create an application yourself!) rather than continuing your crusade against Address Book and iCal. Which I, and many other, love exactly the way they currently are.

My girlfriend is thinking about buying one of these for her PC. I had a 30" Cinema display when I had my PowerMac G5, and it was pretty decent.

Does anyone in the group have any experience with these? Curious about longevity, reliability, etc.

I use a 20" Apple Cinema display (next generation from the one that you're talking about) with my Mac Pro along with other displays. It's a very nice display. It is VERY sharp. I like it because the colors are great for graphic work. It seems like a very good choice to me. You really can't go wrong with an Apple display.

I believe that is the model that has been on the desk in the other room since around 2005 or 2006, connected first to a Dual G5, and now to a Mac Pro.

Fine monitor, within it's limitations, and apparently durable, as I've had exactly zero problems with it.

That said, it isn't what I would buy today, 6-7 years later.
Were I looking, and economizing, I'd probably try to find a used 24" LED cinema display from 2010.

Right. I absolutely loved my 30" when I had it. The 20" we're looking at appears to be of similar make.

I referred my girl toward this monitor because it is Apple and because of the price of a used model, with a warrantee, of sorts.

Thanks Collin.

Jim,

The motivation, in this case, is price. I looked at 30" models for myself, and the price point is not that much different than new models, for one that I would use anyway.

The 20", 'widescreen' as it's known, is less than $150, with everything except video cable. To me, that's a pretty good price for what I'm getting.
