Some people are on very limited data plans, some Canadians pay more that us in the US, people traveling that have to pay for WiFi use at Starbucks, airports and hotels. I'm sure there are some limited cases where it would run more than 20 cents a message.

Among the most limited data plans available, at least in the USA, is $15 for 200 megabytes of data.

10,000 full-length 160-character messages use up 1,600,000 Bytes, or 1.6 megabytes of data.
On the above-named plan, that would cost the user 12 cents.

Let me repeat: TEN THOUSAND full-length messages cost TWELVE CENTS.

Why is it sometimes green and sometimes blue between 2 iPhones using iOS5?
It's annoying to get charged when I text my husband or other family members

Ellen, a true iMessage between two individuals who have iOS5 devices will appear in blue on your iPhone, and they are absolutely free, which is very similar to Blackberry Messenger, which is also free between Blackberry Users. It is the SMS messages that cost you.

All iPhones that are upgraded to iOS 5 can use iMessage when turned on on the individual iPhones. Are all the iPhones you text to have iMessage turned on?

iMessage is only between iPhones that use iOS 5. If the send button is green, it is an SMS and uses your text plan no matter if you are on wifi or not. If the send button is blue, you are using iMessage and it will use your data plan no matter if you are on wifi or 3G. You can remember what service your text is using this way blue=iMessage/data plan green=text message/text plan.

Hi Carol,
To make sure you'll send an iMessage not an SMS, you should turn off 'send as SMS' setting.

iMessage is a big plus for me, too. I'm grandfathered in on AT&T's $5/200 texts. Now that my daughter and best friend have iDevices, I can text freely and don't have to worry about overages. If anyone is ripping people off for texting, it's AT&T, Verizon and the other carriers. Texts take up ridiculously small amounts of data, yet they charge up the wazoo for them. iMessage is a perk not a problem.

.10 a text message is ridiculous. The only person I use actual text messaging with these days is my brother, who won't upgrade to iOS 5. I use iMessage for everyone else. I've noticed that iMessage seems faster than plain texting. It's like having a real time conversation. I don't understand why one would turn it off since it would make the person your texting with have to send regular texts which uses up their number of text messages.

Same here. Most of my friends have iPhones. The ones I text the most use iMessage. It's a great service. I have one friend with an android. I use a text messaging app with him so the texts go over data instead of us using up our texts.

My texting does not go against my texting plan... at least it never has. My texting is unlimited to it is always 0 cost and 0 use of minutes. But when my imessage was on, two of my sons said it was a royal pain for them.

I don't know that we are being ripped off, but if you multiply $10 by 5 family members then it becomes $50 and the $30 unlimited text at ATT is a better price.

I just think there are two many regulations these days and not enough simplification, not just on phones but everywhere.

And what do you pay every month to get unlimited texting?
And on your AT&T bill, on the average, how many texts are actually sent each month?

Of course that is true - family unlimited text is $30

(in a recent email you said you had unlimited texting for $0)

I'm still confused what your problem with iMessage is.

iMessage uses very little data from what I see when I look at my data usage. When at home, I'm using my home wifi, so data usage isn't a problem for me.

You are paying $30 every month for unlimited texting.

Formerly, if you wanted to, you could drop down to a lower level, should you choose.

Upon reviewing the AT&T Wireless website, I am reminded that there are now NO lower levels to drop down to on the Family Plan, except pay-as-you-go $0.20/message.

So, yes, you might as well stay where you are, but the costs to you of leaving iMessage ON is immeasurably small, even if non-zero.

All of us who are paying "normal" carrier rates for texts messaging are being ripped off.

Earlier, I wrote that ten thousand iMessages use no more than 1.6 megabytes of data.

Is that "unlimited"?

One message every 3 minutes, 15 hours a day, 30 days a month, is about ten thousand messages. If all five members of your Family Plan text at that rate, they will use 8.0 megabytes of data.

At AT&T's current MOST expensive data plan -- $20/month for 300 megabytes/month -- those 8 megabytes would use up 2.7% of your data allowance (if it came out of your data allowance).

[Since everyone would have to be texting essentially continuously through every waking minute all month, you wouldn't have much OTHER data expense, but that's beside the point.]

On this most expensive AT&T plan, that much data costs about 53 CENTS.

On the text plan you have chosen, you are actually PAYING $30 for those texts (or for any lesser amount of texts).

$30 for $0.53 worth of data, or less.

What was that about not being ripped off?

That is what I am saying, my phone bills and cable bills are not easy to understand and cable covers up a lot of their costs. So my cell phone bill is getting as ridiculous and if I want a complete accounting of our calls and expenses they will charge me even more.

Right.
Phone and cable bills are complicated.
Although I can examine my AT&T Wireless bill online in complete detail.
But understanding iMessaging is easy.
