Okay, you're right. My error. They are still $25/month. I lost track, because my company bought a corporate license, so I don't pay anything any more. And at $25 they are still a stunning bargain.

I have also used the lynda.com courses with success & find them to be a good value.

Not to mention on the Apple web site! They are almost always mirrored
there.

Why pay when you can get the same or better, from the 'horses mouth',
for nothing!

I don't remember which MS ads they were, but I do remember that the

In all truth, I blame the Chinese running those plants, not Apple.

I might grant that Apple has not micro-managed their production over
there, and in a way, has allowed this to happen, but...to blame Apple
for the Chinese bosses' inhuman performances is just plain wrong.

When those of us who buy Apple products do so we are supporting the "Chinese bosses' inhuman performances".
I'm guilty of that as well.

Howdy.

Foxconn has factories in 13 countries and a number of Chinese cities.

The largest plant is in Shenzhen and may have up to 450,000 workers.
There are dorms, swimming pool, grocery store, bank, bookstore,
hospital, restaurants, and something like 20 cafeterias.

What the New York Times article didn't say much about is that Foxconn
also makes products for Amazon, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo Wii,
Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and others.

Hi Everybody

Well, I checked in to System Preferences then to Desktop & Screen Saver

I have the Computer Name highlighted under Screen Saver

I click on "Test" and that is normal, it blanks out and and the apple,
Denton's MacBook Pro and

the clock is present.

I click on esc and it is back to Desktop & Screen Saver.

I have it on 3 minutes on Start screen saver: and it stays normal the
screen saver does NOT  activate .

The Hot Corners.. hasn't been changed, they say a - in there.

(I don't know what "Hot Corners" is anyway :-) )

Any body know what gives?

The "normal" problem would be that something is keeping your system "active" so the screensaver timer does not time out. Presuming it's not you, the next likely candidate is a USB connected device. Disconnect everything external except the keyboard (but including any mouse) and wait three minutes. If this does not work, you'll want to check background apps. Activity Monitor will show you anything that is using the system when you are not. Sort the list on the "% CPU" column and look for apps that pop to the top when you are not doing anything. If you recognize something, you might try shutting these down or disabling their "background" functions. It's also possible your system is being "polled" over the network by another system or device. Same tactic. Disconnect your network (pull plug and turn off wireless) and wait.

Cheers,
tod

Howdy.

You might try the "standard" maintenance things.

1. Repair Disk Permissions (use Disk Utility).

2. Safe Disk Boot (boot with Shift key pressed), afterwards, reboot in
normal mode.

3. Use a utility like OnyX to clean cache files. OnyX is free.

You can find a lot of links to free, open source, shareware,
commercialware, postcardware, nagware at MacUpdate site. No
registration required. It's a collection of thousands of links and
info about Mac software.

<http://www.macupdate.com/>

A "hot corner" means that if you use your mouse, then run the mouse
arrow into a Hot Corner on the screen then something will, or will not,
activate.

Hot corners have been around for many, many years. For example, if you
set your screen saver hot corner to activate in bottom left corner,
then when you run your mouse arrow into bottom left corner of screen,
the screen saver will activate.

The most important and Mac-relevant recommendation in that article is the warning against using public Wi-Fi networks (Starbucks and the like). I personally stick to the 3G connection whenever I am away from my secure home wireless network.

Thank you! I didn't realize they were not sent on a monthly basis. It always seemed like they came out each month.

So I guess everything is ok in "10.6.8-land" if I've not received any lately! :-)

Thanks again for the clarification!

safari is slow

Posted by: "mirate" talk@signifydesign.com   ojosabroso

In the past, I could have a large number of tabs, and Safari worked fine. Recently (I'm not sure how long agao this began), it's gotten slower and slower. Often, when I go back to a tab, it's completely blank. When I try to refresh the page, I get an alert saying that I need to force-reload all of the open tabs. It often takes a very long time to reload the pages.

I have cleared the cache and the image cache, but that didn't help.

Generally, the app runs unacceptably slowly a lot of the time. How can I fix this?

Have you done routine maintenance on the OS at all? See Randy Singer's

I'd try two things. Both should help quite a bit.

Uninstall the copy of Flash that you have installed with this
uninstaller:
uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg>
or
http://is.gd/lrnKUG

Then download the latest version of Flash directly from Adobe, and
install it:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Now...

Quit all browsers.
Go into:
System Preferences --> Network --> Built-in Ethernet
and write down the numbers for the domain name server(s) (DNS) to
save them.

You can find the domain name server(s) that provide the best
performance for your Mac using:

NameBench (free)
http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

NameBench will take about 5 minutes to run. Be patient. Use the
fastest DNS it finds to replace the existing setting in Network in
System Preferences.

Let us know how this works for you.

"The Great Courses" are pricey but can definitely be fascinating. You can rent some at your local library if you want to try them out. They will also send you "demo" classes.

Generally these are college courses adapted (to one degree or another) for video presentation.

Cheers,

Disclosure: A good friend of mine just went to work with them. However, I have "audited" some of their course materials in the past.

'The Great Courses' are pricy but can definitely be fascinating. You can rent some at your local library if you want to try them out. They will also send you 'demo' classes.

Generally these are college courses adapted (to one degree or another) for video presentation.

Cheers, tod

Thanx for the good words on TGC, Tod.

As you noted, the courses are akin to university lectures, unlike what is available at a website also recommended by some.

There is a 'special' happening for a few more weeks and the courses are (mostly) going for 20$ or 40$, which is very doable, especially since one gets many hours of DVDs for that.

Bluetooth in App Folder, BUT will not run suddenly today.

27" iMac/2.0/OSX6.8/12gigRAM/1TBHD

This situation has happened suddenly after months working fine.
I posted at Apple Forums, but no help yet, so I ask here:

Deleted the Main Library/Pref/bluetooth.plist, rebooted.
Nothing
Restarted w magic mouse off, removed batteries, replaced batteries, turned on magic mouse.
Nothing
Restarted holding Command+Option+P+R three dings
Nothing
Shutdown, unplugged all connections, then unplugged power cord, replugged all back. Restart.
Nothing
Ê
I can see the Bluetooth app in my applications folder. Clicking on it displays:

"You canÕt open the ÒBluetoothÓ preferences pane because
it is not available to you at this time.
To see this preferences pane, you may need to connect
a device to your computer."
Ê
I have not had this problem using Snow Leopard, ever, until today,
and today Bluetooth suddenly STOPS working.
Ê
I shut the computer down for 4 hours,
then powered up and Bluetooth WAS ACTUALLY RUNNING.
After 10 minutes, it QUIT.
Ê
I booted from my SL installer disk and ran Disk Repair.
I booted from my Diskwarrior Disk, repaired, especially,
Disk Warrior blessed the sysytem folder.

Apple Menu/More Info/Bluetooth/No information found.
Ê
Does anyone know why Bluetooth is refusing to run?
