No "Applications" folder in dock

I just had Snow Leopard installed and there is no Applications Folder in the dock next to the documents and download folders. Is that the way it is with Snow Leopard or if not how do I get that folder back in there?

Since I am using Lion now, I don't remember whether the document folder was not included in the dock on startup or not, however you can drag that file and put it on the dock on the right side. It actually does not physically move the file but creates a marker file that presents the content of that file when you click on it.

Just drag the Applications folder icon into the Dock wherever you want it to be.

I wonder if it's known for a fact that Apple *has paid* for product
placement, because I have heard people say that Apple has never paid

Howdy.
I'm not sure what the distinction is between "product placement" that
is done with the aid of a product maker but perhaps without a payment
(just providing the products only or expertise in use) and a company
paying to see it's product placed. Is that overly subtle??
Apple has had a very strong link to Hollywood for a long time.
Check this infographic from Mashable.
<http://mashable.com/2011/ >12/14/apple- products- movies-infograph ic/
Remember when the Enterprise goes back in time to the Earth of the
1980s and Scotty beams down, walks up to a Macintosh SE (was it an
SE??) and says, "Hello, Computer." Expecting it to speak back.
<http://www.youtube.com/watch? >v=v9kTVZiJ3Uc
It's of course a play on the Macintosh speaking at its first public
introduction and saying,
"Hello, I'm Macintosh. It sure is great to get out of that bag.
Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking. I'd like to share with you a
maxim I thought of the first time I met an IBM mainframe: NEVER TRUST A
COMPUTER YOU CAN'T LIFT!
Obviously I can talk, but right now I'd like to sit back and listen.
So, it is with considerable pride that I introduce a man who's been
like a father to me... STEVE JOBS."

This is 'product placement' of a sort. Rather than Apple pay to have its laptop display so prominent, producers insert a Mac because it just plain shows better.
The Apple icon is more 'natural-looking' and it is luminous-visible on the laptop's open lid. And Apple is on an upswing, so the product vibe is cool.
That said, nothing is forever. Look at the BlackBerry, made by RIM, headquartered not far from where I live. It has taken a dive from which it may not recover.
Once-major Nortel, which was located in the Ottawa area (northeast of me), is now toast.
I recall the Windows 95 hysteria, which was just before I got into comps. Now Windows has contracted the plague. The smart ones are jumping that ship, leaving the rats behind.
That said, farther down the Left Coast is Apple, today's darling. But tomorrow's? Who can know where Apple will be in a decade. This might be the start of a long slow coast down, something that may take more than a decade to play out.

I have a problem with my new mac.
First I had a Apple 2+ in about 1979. Then I had Microsoft systems, then
Linux, now I got a new Mac.
It is a Mac OS X version 10.7.2 Processor 2.8 Intel Core i7
The problem Is the screen saver went out. The screen stays the same the
same.
I have tried to put different pictures but it still stays the same.
Can anybody help me out?

Hi Denton,
Welcome back to Apple.
When you go to System Preferences: Desktop & Screen Saver - you should see a tab called Screen Saver. Once you select the Tab, you should see two columns. One with different screen savers on the left and one on the right which is labelled Preview.
When you select the different screen savers on the left column do you see them in the Preview column? If yes, then below the Preview column there is a time for Screen saver to turn on - what is it set to? Finally look at hot corners - in lower left and check to see that you have not set to disable the screen savers.
Let us know.

Denton, are you saying that the screen saver picture that you chose is not showing up or is it showing up and then disappearing? I don't understand what you mean by "the screen stays the same".

A rather-slick promo catalog for The Great Courses [<http://www.aboutgreatcourses. >] dropped into my lap. I'm about to order 3 sets of courses that will set me back a ceenote.com
Before I do that, however, I would like to know what experiences this group has had with it. I think that some courses may be a tad 'simplistic' in the way that some Wikipedia articles can be, yet the courses promise much and are written by 'experts' in the fields.
By the way, Denver Dan, this may be right up your alley. The Great Courses operates (at least mailing addresswise) out of Chantilly, Virginia. Any snow yet down your way?
Forgive this OT. Thanx. Oneal

You don't say what the subject of the courses is.
Have you looked at Lynda.com? I can enthusiastically reommend their courses, and they are $25 per course, and in my experience, well worth it.

Audio Problem with Macbook Pro
Posted by: "Bill Morton" billmorton999@gmail.com redpup99
Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:14 pm (PST)
I have a MB Pro 17", 2.2g Intel Core 7, 8g Mem, (Early 2011) running
the latest OSX (10.7.2) which has an audio problem.
With nothing plugged into the audio port, the sound is fine through the
Mac's tinny little speakers. But when I plug in a mini-phone cable to one
of 2
external amp/speaker systems, I get a random on/off low volume of a
local radio station. This audio is not affected by the volume controls
on the MAC. Audio from the MAC comes in over this low-volume
noise.
I am less than a mile from a monstrous radio tower; straight line; I
can see it from my desk. This tower is the transmitter tower for
2 radio stations and 2 or 3 TV stations; it is the tallest thing around
for miles.
I'm reasonably certain that the cable to the external amp/speaker
system(s) is acting as an antenna and picking up stray radiation
from this tower.
Is there anything I can do locally at my end to bleed off this
annoyance? Chokes or something on the cable? Filter box of
some sort?
The other thing I find peculiar is that this 2nd unwanted channel
turns on/off randomly; unfortunately it's on about 75% of the
time, then suddenly switches completely off for a while; then
suddenly clicks back on again as if something were triggering
some control in the MAC to start it and stop it?

Howdy.
You may have a difficult Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) problem.
You might try to find or order an audio cable that has a ferrite bead
incorporated in it.
A ferrite bead is intended to reduce high frequency (HF) and radio
frequency (RFI) interference.
A ferrite bead (Google for more info) is a sort of round cylinder,
usually about 1.25 inch long (3.175 cm) that is permanently fixed to
the cable - the cable passed through the center of the "bead." You
often see them as part of a monitor or scanner cable.
You might need something fancier and possible better quality and better
shielded cables and connectors. There are many online suppliers of
cables and connectors and a search on the topics of RFI reduction, and
related topics will produce a lot of results.
There is an excellent cable and connector supplier that I implicitly
trust for high quality cables, good service, and for providing a lot of
information on their topic.
Blue Jeans Cable
<http://www.bluejeanscable.com/ >
In particular, do some reading on the web site for more information.
If available, cables made to "Belden" standards are often very high
quality. Belden is a company that was allied with Bell Labs and Ma
Bell decades ago when the Bell System produced high quality products
intended to last decades without needing replacement. So if there is
an audio cable rated by or made by or for Belden then it is very likely
to be better quality.

Apple's record earnings
Posted by: "Doug Yelmen" dougyelmen@earthlink.net dougyelmen
Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:25 pm (PST)
AND Tim Cook said, "Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 first quarter, which spanned 14 weeks and ended December 31, 2011. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $26.74 billion and net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. "We're thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads, and Macs," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Apple's momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline."
what amazing products in the pipeline?
it borders on science fiction (which becomes reality down the road).

spinning beach ball, long waits, "weird" behavior

one usually looks at hardware, including memory.
but, i found out the other day talking to Apple, that my "Log-in items" can cause such behavior also.
so, i took a picture of the window (Shift-Commnad-4) and deleted all the log-in items, and everything
was zippy again. i put items back in one at a time, sort of like Conflict Catcher from the "olden" days,
until i had all the login items that worked well and played well with my iMac.

Sure, that woudl work if Apole hadn't already deleted that account in an effort of consoolidate your past accounts, In fact, the iPhone comes up with account names that have now been deleted by Apple, so I can no longer update applications that were downloaded under the deleted account names.

Have you turned on USB Debugging?
Are you using a USB "Data" cable or are you using a USB "Charge only" cable?
Go to Settings/Connect to PC and make sure that your Connection Type is set
to Media Sync (or Disk Drive if you want to mount your phone as a mass
storage device)
If you continue to have problems, use WIFI instead of USB (I recommend WIFI
File Explorer, free in the Android Market),
