It's a backslash. Command shift \ is Command | (the key just left of Send
and above the right shift key) on my old Apple kb.

This is from the Apple Support Community & is worth a try since it can't hurt anything:
"I fixed this a million times on Lion machines.
Go to the library --> preferences folder. Should be a file I think called com.apple.safari.plist
Drag that out to the desktop.
Re-open safari, and PRESTO, address bar is back."

I assume the original water bill is an electronic document, and is not paper sent to you thru snail mail.
Is the original water bill searchable? -- If it is an image, then no text can be searched. Saving it as PDF does not make it searchable. You would have to use OCR software first to make it searchable.
If on the other hand, the PDF you placed into the Receipts folder inside the Shared Folder inside your Users folder IS searchable there is no reason why the string "water" should not be found by Spotlight. In that case you should send a screenshot to the list. Going to http://minus.

Hi Lou,
I can find the files when I search using Spotlight but that isn't the issue.
You know when you are trying to print a file and use save as PDF you can click on an existing file and the name of that file will be placed in the Save As field. I want to name this water bill using the same convention each time so I want to click on an existing water bill file and get the naming convention and then just change the last 6 digits which are the date of the bill.
I tried the search filter and it doesn't help. It does work from the Spotlight search but not the search dialog when you bring up Save As PDF.

In the left-most drop down box, select "Name", then to the right "contains" and then type in "water". If you are searching for a File Name, then be sure to click the File Name button. If searching for the word "water" in the file contents, click the Contents button. You'll probably have to remove the original text you typed into the Spotlight search window. As long as you are not searching for a hidden file or in a hidden folder, it should show up in your search.

Hi Anna,
The original is a screen print of the receipt I get when I pay my water bill. I'm not looking to find the contents of the receipt but the name of the pdf file. I keep a copy of all the printed out receipts in a receipts folder and instead of having to type the name over again. I just want to get to the latest version, click on it to replace the name of the file in the Save As dialog box and then just change the six digit date.
Unfortunately the file won't come up when searched in the search box under the Save As Pdf. -- it will show up if searched using the Master spotlight search.

It works by me without any problem, so I guess you are not taking the right steps; but as long as you don't send screenshots we will never know what steps you are really taking and the details that are causing the failure.

Terrible storm last night. My power out from 10 pm on. Still out 20 hours later.
Power still out for about 400,000 customers in Northern Virginia.
Now at Tyson's Corner Mall in Fairfax County enjoying the air conditioning on this 100° F day where Apple opened Store Number 1. That store was so packed with people I couldn't get in.
iPhones have been great during emergency but even some cell and Internet problems.
Micro$loth took 10 years to crank up the copy machine and now has a Micro$loth store here at Tyson's Corner – usually pretty empty. But today it has a bit of a crowd and I heard someone say it takes a great catastrophe to bring customers in. :-).

109 here for the first time since records in middle TN. The yard is brittle hay. We have till mid September until rain usually comes in any measure. Glad we have rivers here. Smaller ones will be bone dry if this keeps up by September. May 1-3, 2010 we received 19+ inches rain. Strange times we live in. jr

"the times they are achanging." or words to that effect. mother earth can only handle so much.
speaking of microsloth, i had bought office 2011 for home. had so much trouble with it, i discarded, and am
using OOo-dev. how that came about, i don't know. when i am on a mission, i can get carried away.
speaking of missions, with this new SSD, on my 27" 2010 iMac, it is like a new mac, and i am having fun
almost non-stop. my new 0 RAID (performance) will be here shortly. i am also getting a new second
monitor (out with the old CRT-in with the new LG LED).
gotta have some fun while i still can.

Best of luck -- we were out for 6 days with Irene last year. Had our well (separate power) hooked up to the generator.

I'm charging one iPhone in car and have one of my UPS battery boxes recharging another.
Prefer the car – it has AC!
Amazon, Netflix, Pinterest, and I hear some AOL Internet stuff is back up.

Good luck to all those in the outage. Thats 1.2 million people in MD, DC, and VA as of yesterday, though I know first hand that BGE is working diligently and the number is coming down. And I must add that Verizon FIOS went the extra mile on my house yesterday as well.
More appropo, while both ATT and Verizon cellular were "up" the whole time as far as I could tell, 3G was down for both services for hours in some places. That means phone and text okay, but no Internets. If you have not learned this already, fiber-optic phones services require power, unlike old-fashioned traditional phone services that are being phased out. That means no "land line" phones either in a long outage.
It pays to have as many available "channels" as possible in a crises. Ham radios anyone? ;)
And on a lighter note, the Verizon FIOS tech carries an ATT phone. Why you ask? Because ATT is union and Verizon Wireless is not. To further complicate issues, Verizon FIOS (as opposed to "Wireless") is union, which is why this solidly union guy will work for Verizon FIOS but won't carry a Verizon Wireless phone.
This is just FYI and not intended to provoke an OT discussion about unions. ;)
cheers,

My Comcast terminal adapter contains battery backup. I have no idea how long it's supposed to work in a local power outage, but that may be irrelevant if there's a need for power to keep the voice traffic (which I assume is digital, not analog) streaming to/from servers in the event of a power interruption bigger than just in my home.
Is aDSL voice service any less prone to interruptions under similar conditions? Since Cell Towers (more and more, they're not towers but rooftop installations, it seems) often or always have integrated generators that kick in if needed, perhaps we're at the point where the most reliable service is no longer the last vestiges of POTS, but multi-band cellular.

Hope you are doing OK. We saw images of the damage. Being rural we're ustage to outages with almost every storm so have good power backup. One hopes your electronics are well protected from surges.

Thanks Dan for your clear explanation. I also have the problem of 3 dialup modems to add to the complexity. I had been turning off Airport, but think I'll set up locations. I did not know they appeared in the Apple menu which makes this convenient.
