Go Go Games: Matching Adventures on the iPad for Children with Autism - Published on 10/09/12

Go Go Games 1.0 is a suite of games on the iPad that helps preschool and elementary school children to learn to notice multiple features of the objects in the world around them, a specific perceptual skill that is essential to learning and comes naturally to most children, but is known to be a common difficulty for those with ASD. Go Go Games features 3 different matching games to support a broad range of children on the autism spectrum with 6 levels of difficulty and more.
San Francisco, California - Go Go Games, an educational app launched by three graduate researchers out of Stanford University's School of Education and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school), has been released today for the iPad. Go Go Games is a suite of casual games for preschool and elementary-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The app helps players to learn to quickly notice multiple features of the objects in the world around them - a specific perceptual skill that is essential to learning and comes naturally to most children, but is known to be a common difficulty for those with ASD.
Go Go Games uses the techniques of Pivotal Response Therapy (PRT), an evidence-based behavioral intervention to target several common challenges for learners with ASD, including perceptual ability. After initial instruction from parents or teachers, players can independently build this critical skill by maneuvering trucks, trains, and spaceships through three different matching adventures: Build-A-Train, Wheels & Roads, and Out of this World.
"We designed the game to feel more like play but work like therapy. Go Go Games is simple and fun, though behind the scenes each matching sequence is carefully selected to provide just the right amount of challenge based on the player's ability to notice and respond to increasingly complex features," said Alexis Hiniker, Co-Creator of Go Go Games.
It is typically recommended that children with ASD receive between 25 and 40 hours of therapy per week - a standard that is impossible to meet for many families. A new study reports that 41% of children with Autism spend "most of their free time" playing video games, dramatically more than the 18% of children nationwide who fall into this same high-user category. As an independent play-based intervention, Go Go Games incorporates core elements of ABA therapies to help parents and teachers bridge this gap and introduce additional therapy time in a fun, naturalistic setting.
"My son loves Go Go Games and he's so excited when he plays it," said Nikii Finch-Morales, Director of Wildlife at CuriOdyssey and mother of a 7-year old with ASD. "From the time he started playing the game about a month ago until now, his progress has been incredible. You can see him stop, focus, and look carefully to find the correct match. He really pays attention, which is something that he didn't do well before."
"Our students are really engaged while playing Go Go Games, especially because of the intuitive touch interface, fun graphics, and audio/visual reinforcements. For many of our kids with ASD, paying attention to details and being able to discern important information from a background is a tough skill, which the game addresses," said Susan Rose, Director of Arbor Bay School. "We're looking forward to using this portable learning tool in our classrooms."

Interactive, multi-player, online gameplay is flawless, with each player able to view the avatar of everyone at the table (in-game chat can be toggled on/off in the user Preferences). Graphite Fusion's high-bandwidth servers provide near instantaneous interconnection, providing a live experience. In fact, in situations where all players check, one after another, the knock sound produced by the game may be heard five times in five seconds. Players have approximately 15 seconds to call, check, raise, or fold when it is their bet, and approximately 30 seconds to type in the word they want to play at the end of betting.
Each card has a large capital letter and a small number in the corner indicating its value, between 1 and 13. Players attempt to make a word with the highest score, the sum of the values of each letter in the word. The highest scoring word wins the hand, regardless of the number of letters used. Gameplay follows all the rules of Texas Hold'em, with an opening bet, and subsequent opportunities to bet after the flop, the turn, and the river. The only differences in Word Poker Live Free are that players are dealt 3 rather than 2 pocket (private) cards, and the hand a player shows following all bets may contain between 1 and 8 cards, rather than the usual 5 used in poker.

App developer Metrocket teams up with lodging coupon publisher Market America to provide hotel coupons in the popular iExit app. iExit Interstate Exit Guide allows travelers to locate gas, food, lodging and shopping by exit number along U.S. interstates. Version 4.6 introduces hotel coupons for significant discounts at hotels along a user's travel route. Market America distributes over 20 million of its Original Red Guide magazines annually to rest areas and other outlets across 22 states.
Birmingham, Alabama - Metrocket, the developer of the popular iExit road-trip application, is partnering with Market America, a national publisher of hotel coupons. This partnership will allow iExit users to see upcoming hotel discounts grouped by exit when traveling on a major U.S. highway.
iExit uses a smartphone's location to determine when a user is on the interstate and then displays upcoming exits and businesses without the press of a button. Its powerful and intuitive search functionality allows users to see only the upcoming exits that have what they need, whether that's diesel fuel, coffee, a rest area or a favorite restaurant. iExit has been the top travel app in the iTunes App Store for much of 2012.
Market America distributes over 20 million of its Original Red Guide magazines annually to rest areas and other outlets across 22 states. As of today, travel coupons for fourteen states can be accessed on mobile devices with iExit, with the remaining states to be added by November 1st. The inclusion of these coupons in iExit makes it more convenient for travelers to find great deals on hotel stays.
