try double clicking on the email to open it in its own window. it should show you the picture and allow you to control-click on the picture to save it.

Very strange, sounds like you have a corrupted email program. I think that we have covered all bases and I for one cannot think of any other solution.

I stand corrected thanks to Otto.
If I select the specific Sent Email then hit Apple+Y, Quick Look does open the attached image. That's a new one to me. The image is invisible on the sent email and yet I can view it w Apple+Y.
This must be some programmed way to speed up Mail by hiding any attachments.
Thanks, Otto.

I guessed that the "normal" method didn't work, or you would not have asked
the question. Now, why does Quick Look work? I can't find any preference
that would hide attachments in "normal" view.

I recently switched from a local cable provider to Bell.net which is the much larger telephone company. Since then my mail will "hang" in the outbox anywhere from hours to days to forever, currently. When I go to the connection doctor it shows that my bell accounts are offline, my yahoo accounts are also offline but (currently at lease) my gmail accounts show "connection succeeded". I do receive some email although I am not confident that I get everything. Some of my correspondents become confused when I manage to reply by copying the message into gmail and sending from an unfamiliar address.
Googling the symptoms shows that this is a very common experience for many people and the suggested fixes are so varied that I am left confused. I have tried some of the fixes but none so far has been the right one for me.
I am writing this query on my iPad, using my Yahoo account which seems to work here.
For the next few weeks the iPad will be my sole connection with the net while I travel but I would love to find one final fix.
BTW the provider, on two previous occasions has had me allow remote control and clicked around for a while to re-establish the connection but it has not been permanent nor have I learned anything in the process.
I am running Mountain Lion on my iMac and, for others, this seems to have been a starting point for a similar problem.

Further to this message, I have just tried to connect to my Bell account through netmail and found dozens of unread messages. I did this on the iPad, don't know if I can do it in the iMac, must go to bed now, travel tomorrow.

Well, it did not get to the list by way of yahoo, since it shows your e-ddress as gmail.
Could it be that you are trying to use a gmail e-ddress from a yahoo mail app? Yahoo may not like the gmail e-ddy.
What are you using to read your email on your iPad? Yahoo web mail, a yahoo mail app, Apple's Mail.app, what?
And on what machine are the emails hanging in the outbox? The iPad, a Mac or PC?
We're not mind readers, you have to tell us.

Let me correct that. It did go thru yahoo.
The long headers show "X-Mailer: Yahoo Groups Message Poster" but the sender is a gmail e-ddress. The servers at yahoo may not like permitting those through the server. And that may be why the outgoing email gets stuck in the outbox.
From the headers, X-Originating-Ip: 76.68.3.111 suggests your either in Canada or your ISP is in Canadian. You mentioned Bell.net in your original email, which is related to Microsoft, and the IP seems to be with Bell Canada or sympatico.
You have really got me confused and that may also be happening with your email.
Who is your ISP, who brings the wire to your house that provides your internet connection? That would not be gmail, or yahoo. Those are email accounts, not your Internet Service Providers.
Do you use an email app or web mail to send and receive your email?

Thanks Brent, Obviously I'm not very expert at this. I had to be when I used a PC but in the last 10 years with a Mac I have certainly become lazy.
The problem I am encountering is on my iMac with Mountain Lion and Mac MAIL. I had mail working fine before I switched to Bell Canada. It retrieved all my mail from whatever source and presented it under separate headings. Messages were on my computer, under my control. I am pecking this out on my iPad as I wait to depart on vacation. I think it will be best to wait until I return to my keyboard after I get back.
In the meantime I will have to learn to love netmail.
