Why iTunes may be Apple’s biggest asset Posted: 04 Jun 2013 04:42 PM PDT When Apple’s iTunes Store debuted on April 28, 2003, it launched with zero customers. Today, Apple has more than half a billion iTunes accounts. While not every account holder gives Apple his or her credit card details, most do. Therefore, it’s fairly safe to assume that Apple with its online-only content store is the biggest seller on the web. Indeed, an analysis by Morgan Stanley reveals that not only is iTunes second only to Facebook’s one billion accounts, it also makes more money per account than Amazon. More interesting factoids follow…(...) "Why iTunes may be Apple’s biggest asset" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
Posted: 04 Jun 2013 04:31 PM PDT In just two days, one of the most anticipated jailbreak tweaks to ever hit the iPad will touch down. Obviously I’m referring to Auxo for iPad, the jailbreak tweak that will finally reinvigorate the iOS app switcher on the larger screen. Auxo for iPad has taken a long time to arrive, because it has been meticulously built and designed. Instead of simply porting a rough version of the tweak to the iPad, the team behind the popular iPhone release decided to take their time and get it right. Did they accomplish their goal? You’ll have to wait until our review on Thursday for the answer to that. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview teaser video of Auxo running on the iPad.(...) ITC finds Apple guilty of infringing Samsung patent, bans certain devices Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:17 PM PDT This is huge. The United States International Trade Commission just ordered a US import ban against older iPhones and iPads, after finding Apple guilty of infringing on a cellular standard-esential patent asserted by Samsung. The ban, which encompasses a number of various iOS device models including the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and 3G iPads, will go into effect within 60 days unless vetoed by the White House during a Presidential Review period…(...) First WWDC 2013 banners go up at Moscone West (hint: flat icons) Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:06 PM PDT With less than a week until the highly anticipated June 10 keynote at Apple’s summer conference for developers, first banners are now going up at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Judging by the looks of it, WWDC 2013 will focus on a major iOS redesign that Tim Cook officially confirmed last week during his D11 segment. As more of these photos surface in the next hours, we’ll be adding them to this post throughout the day…(...) comScore: Apple increases lead as top US smartphone maker Posted: 04 Jun 2013 01:04 PM PDT While Wall Street analysts and investors seem pretty content with the ‘Apple is doomed’ meme, the numbers continue to fall in Apple’s favor. The company’s mobile devices are still wildly popular and selling out in droves— particularly here in the US. Market research firm comScore published a new report today regarding the state of the US smartphone market. And not only does it show that Apple is leading in smartphone marketshare in the country, but it’s growing faster than the competition…(...) Time Warner CEO says it’s discussing streaming video deals with Apple and others Posted: 04 Jun 2013 11:38 AM PDT This is kind of interesting. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Telecom and Media conference today, Time Warner’s CEO Glenn Britt told investors that the cable company is in talks with a few tech giants, including Apple, over video streaming deals. Britt says the deals are similar to the one Time Warner inked with Roku back in March, which allows subscribers to stream 300 cable channels to the Internet-connected set-top box. And his comments suggest we could see a comparable package land on the Apple TV…(...) Apple explains iSpaceship benefits to Cupertino’s economy Posted: 04 Jun 2013 11:25 AM PDT Apple Tuesday released an 80-page report detailing the economic benefits of Apple’s current headquarters. Along the way, the iPhone maker hopes a peek at the potential flood of cash headed toward local government coffers will help gain city approval of its upcoming iSpaceship campus. Among the highlights: Apple maintains a local payroll of $159 million for 16,000 employees, making it the largest sole employer in Cupertino. Creation of Apple’s Campus 2 (aka iSpaceship) would create 7,400 “new high-quality jobs.” And, new campus construction will add 9,200 full-time construction jobs to the local economy over a three-year period, the report adds…(...) Apple patents S Beam-like device transfers Posted: 04 Jun 2013 10:30 AM PDT A 2009 Apple patent application is gaining renewed attention, not only because the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today issued a patent to the iPhone maker, but how the technology could keep pace with smartphone rival Samsung. At issue is finding a way to easily transfer data between handsets and desktop computers. The patent, titled “System and method for simplified data transfer” describes how two Apple devices could wirelessly sync data using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, a system as yet unavailable in Apple products but part of Samsung’s S Beam feature on select NFC-enabled Galaxy devices…(...) Flipswitch: a new centralized toggle system for iOS Posted: 04 Jun 2013 09:50 AM PDT We’ve covered hundreds if not thousands of jailbreak apps, tweaks, and themes over the years, and many of them contain some form of toggle to enable and disable functionality on device. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a centralized means of providing toggles, instead of each developer wasting resources to come up with their own? Having a centralized toggle framework would also ensure that functionality remains more or less the same amongst the variety of different apps and tweaks. That’s where Flipswitch — a new centralized toggle system for iOS — steps in to save the day. A collaboration between developers Ryan Petrich and Jack Willis, Flipswitch is a generalized toggle framework that’s ready to go out of the box. This is a new tool that will make it easy for developers to implement toggles into their apps and tweaks with very few lines of code. Take a look inside as I talk about FlipSwitch, and showcase its sample tweak — Switchicons — in our video walkthrough…(...) Security flaw compromises restricted iOS apps Posted: 04 Jun 2013 09:00 AM PDT Yesterday, we highlighted a proof-of-concept iPhone charger by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology which can be used to install malware on your non-jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in under a minute. It’s another example of the cat and mouse game played between hackers and Apple. Today, we received word of an iOS security flaw which can be exploited to break the password required to restrict access to apps, content and features on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad…(...) New Activator beta adds new flick icon gestures and more Posted: 04 Jun 2013 08:21 AM PDT Activator has been around for a long time, and it’s safe to say that it’s a staple jailbreak app, and probably a little bit under appreciated. While new fangled tweaks seem to get all the shine, Activator, the gesture plumbing that many jailbreak tweaks rely on, keeps on trucking along. Since the initial 1.7.5 beta release at the beginning of May, Activator has been on the receiving end of a significant overhaul of its structure and inner workings. Perhaps the most exciting of all of the updates happened yesterday, with 1.7.5 beta 6. This new release adds support for per-app launch gestures and icon flick gesture. Think Velox. In other words, Activator just got a lot more power under the hood, and it’ll be interesting to see what developers and users like you, do with it all. Take a look inside as I dissect these two new features and showcase how they can be used.(...) "New Activator beta adds new flick icon gestures and more" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |

‘NewsTask’ prevents the Newsstand folder from appearing in the App Switcher Posted: 04 Jun 2013 07:46 AM PDT Newsstand is basically just a glorified folder, no? So why does the Newsstand folder show up in the app switcher, when regular folders don’t? That’s the question asked by the developer of NewsTask, a new jailbreak tweak that prevents the Newsstand folder from appearing in the app switcher.(...) Apple: no conspiracy in e-book case, DoJ unfairly twisted Steve’s words Posted: 04 Jun 2013 06:20 AM PDT Yesterday, the Department of Justice (DoJ) publicized its antitrust case against Apple in the form of an 81-page slide deck to prove that the iPhone maker has teamed up with five major U.S. publishers to form a cartel in order to raise prices of digital books. But as Tim Cook said at the D11 conference, Apple is going to fight the “bizarre” case and has no intention to "sign something that says we did something that we didn't do”. And while the DoJ is arguing the facts, Apple is arguing the law and accusing the government of unfairly twisting Steve Jobs’s words pulled from Walter Isaacson's bio book. Apple's attorney Orin Snyder denied any conspiracy and argued that "publishers fought us tooth and nail"…(...) MiniPlayer 2.3 adds new ‘Play Next’ and share features Posted: 04 Jun 2013 06:12 AM PDT In case you haven’t noticed, I’m quite fond of MiniPlayer. It’s an app that started off a little homely looking, but has transformed itself into one of the better jailbreak tweaks that you’ll find on iOS. The dynamic duo behind the tweak — Surenix and MPow — have been obsessively refining MiniPlayer over the last few weeks; so much so that I’m beginning to worry about them a bit. Guys, it’s really okay if you want to take a break. Remember, deep breathes. At any rate, the end users have reaped the benefit of the development team’s obsessive level of detail and thought. I once said that MiniPlayer 2.2 was the defining moment of the tweak, but let me restate that, MiniPlayer 2.3 is the defining moment of the tweak. That is, of course, until MiniPlayer 2.4 appears with lasers and its own built-in coffee bean grinder. But seriously, MiniPlayer 2.3 brings quite a few new (and quite useful) features to the proverbial table. For starters, there’s a new tap gesture to reveal repeat options, sharing options, and shuffling. There’s also a great new addition that allows you to add an iTunes inspired ‘Up Next’ (here dubbed Play Next) track, along with the ability to rearrange the playing order of the tracks in your MiniPlayer queue. Take a peek inside, as I step through a few of the most outstanding new MiniPlayer features in our video walkthrough.(...)
