MacBook Air SuperDrive usable on other Macs
Posted by: "Jurgen Richter" yahoo-1@sympatico.ca epsongroups

For any of you who have one of those slick and slim MacBookAir
SuperDrives (with the short cord), you can use it on other Macs once you
follow the instructions below.
I found this on the web and it works on my Mac Pro Tower. I hoped I
could use it on one of my other Windows tablets too, but no dice. It's
just easier to buy a Windows unit, or a Lacie or some other brand.
http://www.hardturm.ch/luz/2011/ 10/how-to- make-the- macbook-air- superdrive- work-with- any-mac/
For convenience, I quote:
"Upon closer inspection of what goes on in the driver, I found that
apparently Apple engineers had the need to test the superdrive with
non-MacBookAir computers. The driver recognizes a boot parameter named
"mbasd" (MacBook Air Super Drive), which sets a debug flag in the driver
which both overrides the check for the MBA and also tweaks something
related to USB power management (the superdrive probably needs more
power than regular USB allows). So just editing
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfigur ation/com. apple.Boot. plist and
inserting the "mbasd=1″ into the "Kernel Flags" does the trick:
1) open the Terminal app.
2) type (on a single line)
sudo pico /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigur ation/com. apple.Boot. plist
3) Insert "mbasd=1" in the <string></string> value below the <key>Kernel
Flags</key>
(If the string is not empty to begin with (it normally is), then use a
space to separate the mbasd=1 from what's already there).
The file will then look like:
<?xml version="1.0″
encoding="UTF-8″?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC
"-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
"http://www.apple.com
/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0″>
<dict>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>mbasd=1</string>
</dict>
</plist>
[Update: As CyborgSam pointed out in the comments, the file might not
yet exist at all on some Macs. In that case, the pico editor window will
initially be empty - if so, just copy and paste the entire XML block
from above].
Save (press Ctrl-X, answer yes to save by pressing Y, press enter to
confirm the file name).
4) Restart your machine.
===
It worked for me and the drive became useful to me. (I bought a new one
in the box, cheap at a police auctions site here in Ontario, hoping it
was just a standard USB drive. Initially it did not work on my tower,
and I do not have a MacBook Air. It worked fine after the terminal tweak
above.) According to "Tankgirl", apparently there is a small circuit
board that can be retrofitted inside via soldering to enable it to work
on other brands of hardware as a USB device, but finding that circuit
here without shipping it is difficult, and then not that inexpensive.
Then you still have to solder it in, and there goes the Apple warranty.
For under $50 I can buy another brand device that has a warranty and
will work on non-Apple hardware.

Didn't someone already say that once you exceed the allowed number of
region switches, the DVD *firmware* is locked to the last one used? This
would mean that no app (software) can bypass the lock.

Handbrake is pretty intuitive. Go with the presets. Select your source and say 'go'. Default output file is to the desktop.

Sorry for a late reply in the thread.
When I said that VLC is not region specific, I meant that if your region code is still unlocked at the hardware level, then you can play any region's DVD in your drive using VLC. VLC does not write the region code to the hardware. I'm using DVD ROMs on my computers since 2000 or 2001, and it was only the first drive that I enthusiastically kept changing the region code each time I had a DVD from a different country/region, and it locked up completely after 3 changes. Back then, the DVD ROM itself on my desktop computer had cost more than $300 and it was a big bummer.
I don't know what sort of ego DVD manufacturers have, that first they set up different standards across different regions and didn't allow region code switching to happen.
However, I've used VLC to play DVDs since ever on my Mac and it plays all DVDs quite readily - without ever asking for a region code switch. However, if your region code is already locked, you'd have trouble, and it won't work for you.
That said, Handbrake is not difficult either. But again, if your drive is locked, it may not read the data. That's the reason they have the hardware lock in the first place.
You can download Handbrake from handbrake.fr
It is open source and a free download available at the site.
Once you fire it up, all you have to do is point it to the Video.TS folder on your DVD drive, and let all the presets be. It will make your converted video as an .m4v on your desktop. You can rename it to .mp4 if you like, and pull it into iTunes with either extension.
Regards,
Arjun

Arjun,
If I recall correctly, Handbrake also needs VLC to be installed, or at least it did. I believe that it uses the codecs that VLC provides. Is that still true or something from the past?

Handbrake doesn't require VLC unless you want to decrypt DVDs.

Thanks. At one point I recall installing it with VLC being mentioned as a requirement. This might have been back when it was first released, I can't remember.
I have decrypted DVDs using HB, so that's probably where I remember it from.

Do you mean to say "TimeDisk" or do you mean "TimeMachine"?

Happy New Year

Hi everyone,
It's a couple of days late, but it doesn't mean it is meaningless. Far
from that.
I want to wish every one of you a happy new year in 2012.
When we started this group, almost 11 years ago, Jon Bonner and I
thought of "getting in early" with our help group. With the right
timing, we would start the group where people would want to turn to in
order to get help with their Macs once Mac OS X became the standard.
There may be groups with more participants but I wouldn't even bet a
dollar on how useful they are in comparison. I think we have something
special going on here, because we keep our focus. And whenever
moderators step in, I hope that every one of you understands that we do
it because we want this group to remain great. It is because you
contribute to it.
Warm regards,
Michel (Group owner)

Thanks Michel. Same to you.
Being a long time member, (relatively I guess), I have to say that this group has been immensely helpful to me over the years. Even those that choose to 'lurk' and not ask and participate surely get a lot of great and timely info here.
Thanks for the forum that you've created that makes it all possible!
Happy, Happy.

Since you are moving over from another email app you may to enter them in once.
I can not find an e-ddress in my Address Book that I have not used in Mail.app at lease once. For whatever reason it has not indexed your address book.
BTW what app are you using for your Address Book? Apple's?

Even though I have a separate entry for John, Mary, and John and Mary, when I type "john" or even "john smi" into the "To" field only "John and Mary Smith" pops up, not "John Smith." This after clearing out the previous recipients list, restarting a few times, and even upgrading to Lion.

An aside here, I just tried to print a contact from Address Book for the first time. I was amazed to find out that AB prints in envelop style! All I had to do was put a standard business envelope in my printer, and it was done.
Will wonders never cease.
This may have been true for years, but I never knew it!!

There are various options for printing, including an address *book*!

You also burn electricity un-unnecessarily.
Keeping the machine running, not in sleep mode, is one thing, but quite
why you would want the screen on all the time is beyond me.
