Unlocked iPhones

I just upgraded to a new iPhone at AT&T and asked to unlock my old iPhone 2g which is long out of contract. Nope, they said, we don't do that. They suggested googling for further information on unlocking. I did that but was presented with a bewildering array of choices, many of which seem suspect.
Has anyone found a good, easy (for a non-techie like me), and reliable way to unlock an iPhone so it can be used in other countries? Failing that, a good source for new unlocked iPhones?
Many thanks,

By 2g, you mean the first iPhone, right?
Jailbreaking and unlocking (via Snowbreeze, if I'm not mistaken) is the easiest way.
You can easily search about that online.

That is not true. They just do not want to do it. They do it after you have a contract with them for about 1 year and then make an official request. That what I was recently told in my local ATT store. But then if you go to 10 different stores you will get 10 different answers.

I hope you're right, Mark, about AT&T being willing to unlock phones out of contract, but I doubt it.
So let me pose another question: Has any member here been successful in getting AT&T to unlock an iPhone which is no longer under AT&T contract? If so, can you please provide book, chapter and verse on when, where and what you did to make that happen? If you do, you'll make a lot of us happy. ;-)
Thanks,

To improve your chances, make sure you go into a company store and not a franchise store.

I know what you are talking about. I went to an apple store and they
managed to save my contacts but I am ripping all my CDs over again. A
big pain!
