The $ is the Unix command prompt. Commands are typed after this.

By deleting the sleepimage file, you're not doing any harm. The system
will just recreate it when needed.

I never shut my machine down or sleep it. I notice that after cleaning
caches or doing a safe boot, the system is much slower in starting up
once it gets to the account level. If I just do a simple restart, it's
much quicker.

As far as slow start-ups, you have to remember there may be other background apps loading, plus mail may be downloading new emails. The order you open apps may also have to do with speed.

JLW,
I just tried a forced restart from the Apple pull down menu, and all 3 apps open immediately. It's starting up from an overnight shut down where Safari opens immediately, but iTunes and Mail take another 20 seconds or so. It's my first SSD and my first Lion experience, so I'm not complaining about a 20 second start up. That's amazingly fast in my world. There's other weird things, like Mission Control for ex., that don't seem to do anything productive, either. So, it's probably me.

I run Time Machine constantly. But how do I make a "clone backup?" When I used PCs I used Acronis True Image to make clones.

Thanks.

Best,

Jim

Since your marks aren't question, I take it that you're okay with Western Digital, Dan. Coincidentally, I just bought a 1000 GB portable WD drive because it was a great deal.

Jim,
I use both Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) or SuperDuper (SD) to clone my hard drive. I prefer SD for no good reason. You don't have to pay for either for simple cloning but I bought SD because I like scheduling backups. I would suggest you go to each of their web pages and decide which you like best.

I deleted the iMessage app after folks here answered my questions. Roger is right about Apple's lack of info!

I'm glad you aren't talking about iCloud, because it is an account, a service and a server (where you can by more space), or it could get more confusing. Or iPod the hardware or app.

It was a minimalist explanation to the extreme. Just read through the web page.

Yeah, that one I seriously can not understand.

I'm glad you have a better handle on it.

Looks reasonable but check here if you want to save some money.

What do you mean by port configuration? Don't all current Macs have a port
containing both analogue stereo and mini-Toslink?

Does Time Machine delete programs?

Just started using TM on my new iMac. Today when I tried to launch TurboTax, the program had been moved to the trash. Since I did not do that, and I am the only one that manages files, I have to wonder if TM may have done that.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thank you,
Tim

The TurboTax updater puts older versions in the trash. If you downloaded
any TurboTax updates, the newest version should still be in
the Applications folder.
