Several months ago I was inquiring in the ATT store about new family plan for me and my wife (At that time I had Verizon and my wife had T-mobile) and I asked about unlocking and I was told that I had to wait 1 year and once a year had elapsed on my contract than I should made official request and than they would unlock the phone. I eventually went with T-mobile. There contract was a lot less than ATT and they unlock the phones after 3 months. No questions asked. All you have to call them and they will send you a code which will unlock the phone.

To improve your chances, make sure you go into a company store and not a franchise store.

I keep my iTunes library on an external drive and have iTunes point to it. That way, any new iPhone I get, I can sync with no problem. Also, regular syncs and backups of your computer is a good thing. That way if your computer should crash or you get a new one, you can put your stuff back on your computer the way it was.

One other thing, they must have an international plan on their iPhones.

Is it so?
Is it not sufficient that they have access to wifi to receive iMessages?

Wifi should be fine for iMessage. Making and receiving calls needs an international plan. I think data use over 3G needs an international plan too. Best advice is to call up your carrier and find out.

iPhone in Australia

Hi,
my daughter is going to Australia for 6 months. She has an iphone on her dad's plan, but I'm wondering what her options are when she goes over. She won't be travelling to the outback, as far as I know (G), but I've gone online and found different plans, but I'm not even sure her phone will work over there.
If she can't get her iphone going, what are some other good plans or companies if she were to buy an Australian phone (not iphone but a prepaid plan one)?
All advice welcome,
thanks,
bailey

I heard from Australian cousins that Optus offers the best plans and service. Was not able to verify though.

Is her iPhone an AT&T iPhone? If so, she should be able to use it in Australia. She would need an international plan though. Otherwise, a prepaid phone she would buy in Australia would do fine.
