Telstra or Vodafone are good companies to use. Telstra has the best coverage but Vodafone is cheaper. Just make check the phone is GSM and unlocked.

I live in Aust. I have an iphone and I know that you can get pre paid one over here, I do not see any need to buy another phone, as it would not be necessary. Cannot say which plan would be best for her, she will see when she arrives. Alma

Her existing iPhone will work, subject to the roaming terms of your carrier in the US. She may want to get a pre-paid local phone on a local carrier to keep costs under control. She can put in the iPhone in Airplane mode and turn WiFi back on to use it as an iPod Touch.

Speaking for myself:
An international plan is not *required* for using any 3G service, but
it is likely to be cheaper.
I live in the Netherlands, and I happen to have all my traffic with
T-Mobile NL, a subsidiary of T-Mobile in Germany.
I have a smartphone (not an iPhone) and an iPad.
I could add an international plan to either subscription.
I could also buy a short-term international ticket.
First, I'd have to activate this option on my profile page.
Then, upon crossing the Dutch border, I'd receive a text message
inviting me to buy such ticket by texting back or by visiting a
website.
Pricing depends on duration and zone (distance). It seems to cover the
cost of roaming.
Note:
There is the gamble of how much one actually uses (minutes, messages,
MB), so what would prove the best approach with hindsight.

Remember these are Europeans in the US. The carrier is likely to be Orange or Vodaphone or someone. The plans in the EU are quite different than US plans.
iMessage will work fine over WiFi, as will any other Internet-enabled app including Skype.
Since all EU iPhones are GSM only their relationship with AT&T is relevant. Everything will work. The only question is cost, and that depends on the agreement between the EU carrier and AT&T.
I'd look at the EU carrier web site for international roaming guidelines, and in the meantime keep international data roaming turned off in Settings. The phone will still work as a phone and for SMS.

I've been following this thread and want to chime in. I'm from California (AT&T) grandfathered plan with my G3s iPhone updated to 5.0. Currently I'm in Mannheim Germany. I have removed my SIM card from the iPhone and have been using iMessenger to text with other iPhones. (I don't want any AT&T surprises) I have WiFi (WLAN) set up and running here in Germany. I've been able to send and receive from, USA, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. I'm Having problems reaching Spain, Korea and Brazil. Anyone have an idea why Spain, Korea and Brazil are not reachable? iPhone to iPhone (5.0). I imagine iMessenger should work where ever you are, SIM card or no SIM card.
Side note I have used Skype in Costa Rica to call California. Sim card was removed and I had WiFi at the hotel I was at. Call was good. I also used Skype from California (data plan) to call Germany. No problem.

I'm with AT&T and am unable to call overseas without an international plan. Maybe using Skype but I'd have to be on wifi, correct? It's not like I can just pick up my phone and call my friend in Australia as if I were using a POTS phone.

Very good to know. I'm not sure why you're having problems with some countries. I sure wish all countries would get on the same page. If I was going out of the country for more than a day or two, I'd buy a throw away phone. No need for surprise charges.

Australia, at least in the Adelaide area has expensive Internet service with slow speeds and not a lot of data per month. I have a friend that lives in Adelaide. He Skypes with me about once or twice a month but not for very long. Twitter is better for him since it uses less data.

I have Skype installed (for others), but I don't use it. (I hardly
make any phone call.)
To my knowledge (that may be wrong), one could Skype over 3G as well
as over Wifi.
As I see it, the decisive matter is the service that the caller uses
from his (m/f) provider.
Here at home I have an ADSL cable and 3G reception.
This message goes from my notebook computer ia wifi to my ADSL modem,
and I have no clue what way it will travel to land with each of you
all. (Copper cable, fibre cable, satellite?)
My iPad (iOS 5) is set to prefer wifi to 3G. I don't think that I
could losslessly disconnect my modem while Skyping from my iPad, but I
bet I could reinstate the conversation over 3G within seconds. Vice
versa.
And after all, we all don't need an international plan to get our
messages in this group across the globe, do we? :-)
The nature of the Internet data packages shouldn't matter.
But once a telephone central gets invokes for dialing, then some fee
is due. I think.
Just my two credits... ;-)

Of course. It's backed up along with my MBA and iMac and external photo library onto an external that is stored at my parents. Every couple months I get the drive, reformat and do a full Carbon Copy Cloner back up on it and return it to my parents. At home I have a backup using Time Machine of everything.

iPhone 3G that won't communicate
Posted by: "Dave Skolnick" dskolnick@gmail.com daveskolnick
Sun Feb 5, 2012 7:10 am (PST)
My sister-in-law has an iPhone 3G that is being difficult.
The phone is recognized by iTunes but won't sync - it seems to hang in backup. It does not show up in Windows Explorer (My Computer)
I uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, and the various Apple tools. At that point the phone does show up in Windows Explorer but attempts to copy photos from the phone to the PC result in an error that the device is busy or another application is using it.
A clean installation of iTunes returns to the initial state of hanging backup and the phone not appearing in Windows Explorer.
The phone works fine as a phone, apps work, everything seems fine, it just won't sync or show up in Windows Explorer.
The priority is to get all the photos off the phone so she can preserve them when she upgrades to a 4S. Incidentally, there are 1,643 pictures on the phone. E-mailing photos works but the sheer number of pictures makes that approach daunting.
Any ideas?

unplug iphone. Start Itunes and make sure the box is not checked that says to start iTunes when phone is plugged in. Shut down iTunes. Plug your phone in and see if windows photo manager starts and lets you unload the phone.

That is basically it, you don't really notice until you try and use an
Android or other type of phone and realize how often 'tapping' results in
misspelled words, etc - the iPhone just fixes them as you go - sometimes it
fixes them to a word you didn't mean to use, etc but the majority of the
time it predicts correctly the first time.

You will notice while you are typing that sometimes a small box will show up either above the word you are typing that is the suggested word, if it's the word you mean just tap the space bar and that word will be used if not keep typing or tap the "x" at the end of that box and use the word you were typing.
