Airport Utility 5.6 & 6.0

For those of you who want to keep the standard Airport Utility alongside or
instead of the new iOSified 6.0 here is the link to the newest update (5.6)
- both 5.6 and 6.0 can be installed side by side. The newer one is
'simplified' and doesn't have some of the more in depth settings but will
be fine for the majority of users.

Airport Utility 5.6 for OS X Lion

Airport Utility 5.5.3 for OS X Snow Leopard

Bill,

Am I understanding the following correctly?

Having multiple versions of Airport Utility is ok, as it is only an interface?

6.0 is needed for some iCloud features? If so, which features? 6.0 only works with 802.11n

5.6 works with 802.11 g & n?

5.5.3 works with 802.11 b, g & n, and that is what I currently have installed. I don't remember being offered 5.6 through Software Update.

In my LAN, I have two G4 that are using 802.11b Airport cards. There is no convenient way to connect them by Ethernet.

If 6.0 is n only, I would have problems connecting my my two G4 to the LAN. Syncing Notes is the only thing that I would miss from iCloud. I don't use it to store any data. I am fine with syncing other ways for things like Bento.

My version of 6.0 seems to works with all presently-avilable types of 802.11

From what I can tell if you have migrated from MMe to iCloud and use "Back
To My Mac" you will need to use AU 6.0 as 5.6 still only lists Mobile Me ID
instead of using "Apple ID".

From what I can tell everything is in 6.0 you just have to click "edit"
then you get to the advanced set up areas.

I recently installed the free Startupizer app on Harry's recommendation & it corrected the problems I was experiencing at start up on my MBA. I downloaded the app from the Mac App Store.

I thought "Safe Startup Mode" did not load any applications?
Also normal startup works just fine?
Am I missing something?

Yup, safe boot will only allow certain apps to work. Not intentionally.

Startupizer allows major customization of startup items, plus, it speeds startup quite a bit.

You only need to startup in Safe Boot mode if you either are trying
to fix a problem, or if you are doing so as part of a routine
maintenance plan. Safe Boot mode is not meant to be a mode in which
you run your applications.

All sorts of things happen when you boot into Safe Boot mode. Many
kernel extensions and startup (stay resident) items are kept from
loading. Repair Disk is run; and caches are deleted, including the
font cache.

Word 2004 sudden problem

Posted by: "caribsea@bellsouth.net" caribsea@bellsouth.net   caribsea@bellsouth.net

Sun Feb 5, 2012 6:58 am (PST)

This happened after installing the latest security update from Apple but I don't know that it's related. When I open a new document, Word will not save or save as. If I click on save (the keyboard shortcuts no longer work) it won't do anything and the Quit command and red Close Window button are greyed out. I have to Force Quit to leave the app. Is this a Snow Leopard problem suddenly? The latest Microsoft updates have been installed. Fortunately, Pages will open existing Word docs but I've been using Word for many years and would like to continue but without buying Office 2011. Is the problem with Word or Snow Leopard? Has anyone else experienced the situation?
I just had a thought: I have Leopard on a G4 powerbook and haven't tried using it there. I'll do that now.

From TUAW.com
As noted yesterday, many of the users who updated their OS X 10.6 systems with Apple's most recent security patchesfound themselves unable to run PowerPC legacy apps via the Rosetta compatibility layer. Today a new version of that update (Security Update 2012-001 v1.1) is now available, and it should resolve the issues.

Both my wife and I have experienced this occasionally on Snow Leopard and in Lion. Not frequently but it is a pain not to be able to rely upon iCal. Don't know what the solution is unfortunately.

Thanks Jay

Nice to know I'm not alone with this.

I've done some Googling on it which has turned up two common themes:
(a) It seems to have happened to a number of users from 2010 onwards
(b) Nobody has a fix for it

cheers

I just did the update, and when I clicked Software Update on my Mac I
think I got the Combo Updater (CU) instead. At least that's what I
think happened. The download was 1.32GB, which is a big download --
more than what I would think a "regular" software update would be.
I've got a high-speed Internet connection and it took me an hour to
complete the update. Everything turned out fine.

My Mac was up to date otherwise, so I'm guessing I got the CU anyway.....Jim

At some point Apple changed Update to point to the Combo Updater instead of
delta update and removed delta update from download site. I finally did
all of my machines this morning and noticed the same thing in updater so I
downloaded the CU once from apple.com instead of 5x...

Doing labels in Pages

Just about went bald trying to figure out an easy way to do customized labels in Microsoft Word and Excel 2011. Thank G-d I'm not dependent on these products.

Anyone out there use the current version of Pages? Can it do labels with graphics easily? Or at least with less difficultly as Microsoft Word?

What kind of labels? I used to make name tags for my students (kindergartners) and it seemed pretty easy - used graphics.

I used Avery labels, made a template page and then changed the info on it for the other kids. I don't see why that wouldn't work. For the template I put text boxes where I wanted to put one label and then arranged them down the sheet.

But I think you can download label templates from Avery for different sizes of their label sheets. They use various numbers of labels per sheet - from 1 to about 14? They have them for PC or Mac. Let me look:
http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Templates-%26-Software/Templates

I didn't use them because I started making my own in '98 or so and just made my own and kept my sample. And I found that getting the paper was kind of a chore - You might want to get the Avery label paper first and find the template to match.

Hope this helps,
Bekah

I tried the Avery templates a long time ago and did not like them that much. Maybe they are better now, I dont know, but as an alternative you can go to this site for templates for pages which include labels:

http://www.iworkcommunity.com/?category=0

I have used their label templates.

Why was it so hard? Word has a wizard to do labels, and it makes
things really easy.

In Word...
Tools menu --> Labels

On top of that, Microsoft has free standardized label templates that
you can download from their Web site.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/results.aspx?qu=labels
Since I only ever use one size of Avery label, I use the template for
that size Avery label (8160) all the time. Nothing could be easier.

If you want help doing something in Word that you can't figure out,
why not just ask for help here?

There is a third way and it is right in Pages. Open the doc in Pages that you want to send and click on Share in the main menu. Select email and choose the format: Pages, Word, or PDF. The next thing you'll see is a new message email window with your doc ensconced in the body of the message.

Thanx for this, Otto. Because of your advice (for a problem that I was NOT having) I had a looksee. I ended up deactivating the annoying Sticky Keys [in Keyboard], specifically the part where pressing the 'shift' key five times turned Sticky Keys on or off. Oneal

WiFi

This is probably a simple question but when my iPad 2 or iPhone 4 are just sitting there waiting for an email or text they are in 3G mode. I have to start the device to get WiFi. I would like to get my emails and texts using WiFi. Is there a way to do this or is that just the way the devices are set up?

Howdy.

I was just reporting on one of several new Thunderbolt developments.

I've posted here many times about what poor quality cases Western
Digital makes.
