What To Do Before Giving Old iPhone To Daughter?

I have a new 4S, and I want to give my old 3GS to my daughter, to use in Europe.

1. My 3GS seems to still be synced to my iMac, as it shows the same iCal info, Notes info, Contacts, etc. as the iMac and my 4S. How can I delete the iCal info, Notes info, Contacts, etc. but not the music, from the 3GS without affecting the info on my iMac and my 4S?

2. How can I "de-sync" the 3GS from my iMac, so that it no longer gets my iCal info, Notes info, etc?

3. How can I unlock this AT&T iPhone, so that she can use it in Europe with another carrier?

Thanks,

Alvin

Thank you. Can you tell me how to do that, or tell me where I can find instructions to do that?

* Plug the iPhone into the computer you use to sync it.
* Click on the "summery" button.
* Now you will see a button near the center of the screen that says "Restore". Click on it.
* Just follow the instructions, remembering that you want to end up with a "new" iPhone as you make your choices.

I hope this helps, Good luck.

Hi there,

A sibling of mine has an issue with their iPhone 4 with respect to setting
up iMessage. When they go into SETTINGS>Messages>Imessage: it is turning
itself on and off.

Any thoughts how to rectify this?

Thanks.

How Samsung Just Screwed Over About 10 Million Of Its Android Phone

How Samsung Just Screwed Over About 10 Million Of Its Android Phone Customers

by Steve Kovach, businessinsider.com
December 23rd 2011 2:41 PM
phone models of 2010, will not get Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.
That means ~10 million people who bought the phone are going to be stuck on the outdated version 2.3 Gingerbread (or 2.2 Froyo in many cases) until they decide to drop more cash on a new phone.

It also means Samsung is basically throwing its pledge to the Android "Alliance" that it will keep devices released within 18 months updated with the latest version of the OS out the window.

Why?

Samsung says its hardware isn't powerful enough to support Ice Cream Sandwich and its TouchWiz skin for Android. (TouchWiz is the extra layer of design Samsung adds to its Android phones. It looks a lot like iOS.)

This is awful news. Samsung just made Google look really stupid for ever claiming that Android devices will start getting on a somewhat unified update cycle, similar to what iPhone and Windows Phone users enjoy now.

It also demonstrates the inherent problem in Android phone manufacturers customizing the OS to the point where you can barely recognize Google's original intentions for design and functionality. Those skins are such a tax on a phone's hardware that it cripples functionality and makes it so all but the newest phones miss out on updates. So far, Samsung only guarantees Ice Cream Sandwich for its Galaxy S II phones. The Nexus S, which is also made by Samsung and shares similar hardware specs as many Galaxy S phones, will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update, but only because it uses a pure version of Android without the TouchWiz skin. Motorola only guarantees it for its latest Droid Razr. And HTC will issue Ice Cream Sandwich for the Rezound some time next year.

What a horrible time to buy any Android phone that isn't a Nexus-branded device. Buying a Galaxy Nexus right now seems to be the only way to guarantee you're going to get future Android updates. Otherwise you could be waiting months, a year, or (most likely) never before Samsung or whoever made your phone decides it's time for an update.

Therein lies one of the biggest problems with an open source OS like Android. Just because Android is splintered across devices from several manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, and Motorola is no excuse for Google not to make sure they'll be ready for future updates.

Look at Microsoft. Every single Windows Phone is eligible for the latest version of Windows Phone 7, even if the phone was released more than a year ago. That's because Microsoft has been smart about how it licenses Windows Phone 7, giving manufacturers a list of hardware requirements the devices must follow before they can start using the platform.

As Google continues to stick with its kumbaya message that Android should remain free and open for anyone to use anyway they please, its users are getting shafted. They have no guarantee that they'll get updates as Google issues them unless they buy a Google-approved Nexus device.

Meanwhile, Apple and Microsoft will continue to eat Google's lunch when it comes to delivering the best software to all their devices.

Apple clarifies iTunes Match with new setup guide, walkthrough video

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Mon Dec 26, 2011 12:37 pm (PST)

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/iBUDRpubKhg/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple clarifies iTunes
Match with new setup guide, walkthrough video, FAQs via 9to5Mac by Mark
Gurman on 12/26/11

With the service launching in the United States last month, it may seem
a little late, but Apple has very recently launched a website dedicated
to iTunes Match. Previously, iTunes Match was given a slab of the
iTunes in the Cloud website.

The new iTunes Match website is very descriptive and tries to clear up
much of the confusion that has surrounded the product since its
announcement. Apple thoroughly explains the basics of iTunes Match with
a paragraph worded similarly to their previous literature on the
subject:

With iTunes in the Cloud, the music you buy from the iTunes Store
automatically appears on all your devices.1 And for music you haven't
purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. iTunes
Match is built right into iTunes on your computer and the Music app on
your iOS devices.2 It lets you store your entire collection in iCloud,
even music you've imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than
iTunes. When it's in iCloud, it's available on all your devices. So you
can enjoy all your music anywhere, anytime — on your iPhone, iPad, iPod
touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.

The company then explains how the service works by detailing the song
matching and uploading process. The new website, also spotted by
AppleBitch, features a clear setup guide, FAQ, and walkthrough video –
three things that publications have taken to themselves to create.
Apple seemingly wanted to create their own so users have the clearest
explanation possible directly from the company.

Apple also posted answers to frequently asked questions, settling the
downloading vs. streaming debate, and clarifying other concerns such as
what happens to songs when your one year iTunes Match subscription
expires. Read on for the full FAQ and Apple-made iTunes Match
walkthrough video.

Who can use iTunes Match?
Anyone with an Apple ID in the U.S and select other countries can use
iTunes Match. You also need iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your Mac or PC
and iOS 5.0.1 or later on your iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and
4th generation), or iPad.
Which music formats can iTunes Match handle?
You can match or upload music formats that can be played with iTunes.
That includes AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and more. How many
devices can iTunes Match support? iTunes Match supports up to 10
devices — including your computer, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple
TV. Will my playlists sync across devices? Yes. When you create, edit,
or delete a playlist on your Mac, PC, iPhone, or iPad, those changes
will sync across any iTunes Match-enabled device you own. However,
playlists with videos, voice memos, or PDF files will not sync.
Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when
played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud
download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as
they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later
even if you don't have a network connection. Apple TV only streams
songs.
Will iTunes Match songs download over 3G on my iOS device?
Yes. Go to Settings > Store on your device. Turn on Use Cellular Data.
If you'd rather download over Wi-Fi, turn it off.
What if I add new music to my library? Do I need to tell iTunes Match
to scan it?
No. iTunes Match will automatically rescan for content, so you don't
have to. Although you can force a refresh by choosing Store > Update
iTunes Match in iTunes.
What happens if I don't resubscribe after the first year? Will I lose
any upgraded songs?
No. Any songs you've upgraded or downloaded again are completely safe.
The only thing you lose is the central storage — iCloud will no longer
stream or download matched or uploaded songs to your devices.
How do I turn iTunes Match on?
On a Mac or PC, open iTunes and choose Store >Turn On iTunes Match.
Then turn on your iOS devices, tap Settings > Music > Turn On iTunes
Match. To turn on iTunes Match on Apple TV, go to Music > iCloud
Library.
Does the Apple ID I use for iTunes Match have to be an iCloud account?
No. If you've been using a separate Apple ID for purchases, that Apple
ID will also work for iTunes Match. You should use the Apple ID that is
associated with the majority of your music purchases.
Apple also posted their own walkthrough video that shows how to setup
iTunes Match on iTunes on the Mac and then how to access your music on
an iOS device like an iPad or Apple TV. You can click here to watch the
video.

Apple posted a support document last week that details iTunes Match
availability across the globe.

Thanks for all the help with this problem. It was simply having
notifications turned on in too many apps. So I turned off notification in
everything. I'll turn it on anytime I need it for a specific app.

Also, I turned off everything running in the background using the
double-click on the home button. Looks as if I probably didn't need a new
iPhone (except for the new technology)! Oh, well.

My son wants to gift an app to someone from his 3GS running 5.0.1 but can't find the "Gift an App" button. Is it still there? It's on my iPhone 4 running 4.3.5 right next to Tell a Friend. Anyone know where it is?
Thanks,

Free apps don't show the gift option and it may not show it for paid
apps if there isn't a credit card.

I usually gift from my iPhone or iPad. On the iPhone, in the app store, choose the app you want to gift, tap the icon to see the description, scroll down to the bottom where it says Report a Problem. Right above that should be Tell a Friend and Gift.

iPhone Home Button via The iPhone FAQ - Information about the Apple
iPhone by Bob Bhatnagar on 12/26/11

Sometimes the iPhone home button stops working properly. The iPhone
operating system is heavily dependent on the home button for several
features and functions, and when it ceases to be responsive this can
really slow you down. There are several reasons why the home button
might not register a press, these can be both hardware and software
issues.

The most common problems with the iPhone home button are when pressing
the button does nothing, or a double-click only registers a single
click. Delays can also happen between presses and action. Luckily there
is a quick fix that will calibrate your iPhone home button you can try
first. This trick can fix an unresponsive home button thanks to a
software reset. To reset a sluggish home button perform the following
steps on your device:

Hopefully, the email hosts will catch up with these creeps some day. Until then I don't think there is much we can do short of changing email addresses like you have done. VERY annoying.

I complained to yahoo as well. I also report the spam then put it in my junk box. I do have to say that a lot of senders had hotmail addresses. That too is better since I block the sender and hotmail.

I worry that if this will ever get to my iphone, I'll really be angry. I get some texmessage ads and a few calls from telemarketers on my iphone, but it has not been as bad as what I get at my home land line phone.

I've checked the email addy they're being sent from and they're all from addys with yahoo.com. I got rid of all the hotmail spam just by blocking hotmail from my gmail account. I noticed since participating quite a bit more in my yahoogroups, the spam has started. I can't say that it's because I send messages to my yahoogroups more these days but it sure is a coincidence.

Calendar App

Appealing to my friends in the group. I am looking for a good app to manage my bill paying. Let me explain how I manage my bills now. I use MS Outlook 2004 (on a pc….). When a bill arrives I add it to the calendar when its due and set the color to red. When I pay the bill I then change the color to green. Works very well and my power has only been cut off a couple of times :). I am looking for an app that will let me do this for the iPad/iPhone. I am retired and travel quite a bit and have no need for a laptop and don't want one. The iPad does everything I want to do at this time in my life. I am quite computer literate since I am a retired computer engineer and HP Master ASE. Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks!!

I use OmniFocus on my iPhone to set my reminders. It works well.

Don't have an app that does as you ask, but we use an online bank. When
the bill comes in, go to the bank and setup payment for the date we want
sent. Goes out automatic by mail. Have some large company bills set up
so the electronic bill comes to the online bank. Can view the bill
online from the bank. Two clicks and the amount and pay date are
selected. For these companies the bank doesn't mail but sends
electronically.

Most large banks or credit unions have apps to do the online banking.

Hope others recommend a good calendar app to do this.

we travel 6-mos a year in our motorhome. all of our bills are set to auto-pay so we never have to remember when they're due or write a check. we get a 'bill' via e-mail 10-20 days ahead of the actual auto-debit which allows me to enter the payment into our check register.

Camera question

Hello

On the new iOS 5 you can use the volume buttons to take pictures. For those who have this firmware on iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S I would like to know if the pictures come upside down when you view them on a windows pc?

I ask because I have an app (camera+) that allows me to use the volume buttons to take pictures and I´m on iOS 4.3.3 and all the pictures and movies come upside down. But if I want pictures to come up right I have to flip the phone and use my left thumb to take pictures.

The funny part is when I use quicktime to view the movies, it shows them the right way, but when I copy the movie to the pc for editing, it comes upside down.

So in another words, whenever you take a picture/movie using iphone 4, on iOS 4.3.3 at least, in landscape mode, you must keep the home button to the right otherwise all your pictures and movies will come out upside down.

Has anyone experienced that?

Thanks

Rod

Anyone using OverDrive with iOS5?

I have to use OverDrive to download library audio books to my 3GS (my 4S is in the mail) and have been having lots of problems since iOS5 came out. OverDrive is blaming Apple. Does anyone have a cure?

Thanks in advance... Bob
