Cleaning up iPhoto files

Sometime ago I tried to back up my extensive iPhoto library. I now have copies of photos in different places on my system...Mac G5 hard drive and external LaCie drive. I'm using iPhoto 9.

Is there a way to identify and remove the duplicates? I'd like to work on them in iPhoto but I can't enlarge the dupes. I know the links to the photos are broken, but I don't know how to fix them or if it's even possible.

Thanks.

Two questions:

Did you mis-type the 'original OS' version numbers?

Two, what is it about this iMac that limits it to a maximum OS version
of 10.6.8?
He would have dual core on an Intel chip. I thought that was sufficient
for Lion. Something I'm missing here.

Why oh why does Apple insist on iPhoto managing files in such an
obtuse way? It seems to cause trouble for everyone who uses the app at
one time or another, and just doesn't need to be this way! Sheesh.

Lion requires Core *2* Duo - the listed machines is Core Duo.

MacTracker [ http://mactracker.ca/ ]is a good way to check on info abut specific Mac models.

Core Duo processors are not compatible with Lion. They are 32 bit
processors.

Moving images from events to individual folders

Hi new member, fairly new mac user. Have 3000 photos stored randomly in events and places. Would like to sort them into individual files. With WIN I can drag and drop to a new folder and it moves the image. In iphoto, I can drag and drop but it leaves a copy in the event file too so I've not accomplished anything towards cleaning it up. Is there some way to do this without having to -move to trash - every image one at a time?

Thanks, Jan

Hold the command button down as you drag the picture, folder, etc. to the new location then let it go. By doing this it will relocate the file and not duplicate it.

Maybe I am not understanding exactly what you are doing. Usually if you move something within the HD you are using it will actually move that object to where you want it. However, if you are moving the same object from one HD to another outside HD, what I told you will work. I just thought of something, are you doing this within a program and if so, what program?

No, I'm just using the iphoto. I want to clean up the events and places by moving most of the images into individual folders/albums. I can move a copy of the image with no problem but a copy always stays in the mail file. I've tried so many times now I've got several copies of images in several places, LOL. Kept thinking maybe if I made a new folder and started over......

ie, in iphoto, I have many images taken on a trip to Graceland this summer, and many more from a trip to New Orleans. All in the events file. I love them but don't want to have to scroll through them every time I want an image. I've made albums called Graceland and NO and tried to move the image from the events to the folder -- but as I say, it only puts a copy in the album and leaves the original in events. I know I'm repeating myself but not sure how to say it otherwise.

If I add a new event, in the event file, I can Merge images but that isn't quite what I wanted to do.

Where did my files go?

Posted by: "Dane Robison" macdane@mac.com   macdane1

This is a weird problem...I'm not even sure how to construct a short
but meaningful subject line. 10.5.8 and here's the scenario:

1. Copied almost 5000 photos from a compact flash camera card to my
laptop, using Finder.
2. Did a bunch of other, unrelated work over the next several hours.
3. Hit command-z to undo something; whatever it was appears not to be
undoable, because I got a little progress window showing "Undoing Copy
of Almost 5000 Photos from Compact Flash Card"

I canceled the operation immediately, but am left with only 89 of the
nearly 5000 photos. The CF card is no longer in my possession and
there's nothing in the trash. Where did those files go?

Thanks,
Dane

Dane,

I'm going to guess here, and maybe a better answer will be provided by
someone. I don't know what process you kicked off to provide that
progress window, but I suspect that you simply did a bulk deletion of
the pictures from your HD. The files didn't go anywhere. They should
still be on your HD, just as with any deletion of files, until you
write over (with new files) the space where the files resided. Use a
file recovery program as soon as possible to get back as many files as
possible. Do little else (ideally nothing else) before doing this, to
prevent more pictures from being overwritten. Look back in the list
archives for a fairly recent discussion of file recovery programs.

Hi Mike,

I should've been more clear that this is more of a curiosity than
emergency. I can get the CF card back and copy the files again
tonight. What I did to provide the progress window was command-z
(undo). Apparently, the last "undoable" event in the Finder was the
copying of those files, so it "undid" the copy. It seems reasonable
that undoing a copy operation is equivalent to deleting, but when I
delete files they at least end up in the trash where I can access them
before emptying.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a time when I've deleted
files from my startup drive and had them simply vanish, without a
layover in the trash. Can you?

Thanks,
Dane

I've never used command-z that I can remember, but you're right, most
of the time stuff I delete ends up in the trash folder. I just
duplicated a folder on my desktop and then, while the duplicate was
still highlighted, I hit command-z and the file disappeared, but it
did not appear in the trash.

Corrupted App?

Posted by: "Donna Ells" dellis70@tampabay.rr.com   dellis551

Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:32 am (PST)

I have 27" i5 iMac, 10.6.8, quad core. Yesterday Dec 28, we experienced a
power outage (not uncommon in this rural area). The iMacs are each on a
battery back up surge protector. I was running Eudora on my iMac (I know, I
knowŠ). We have road runner internet service. The cable was also out during
that time. Turns out an accident had taken place a few miles away, and all
the lines were severed.

Anyway, after powering back up yesterday afternoon, I clicked on the Eudora
icon in the normal fashion. It popped up as a brand new app on the 27" iMac
and required all the server info be put back in. All the prefs had to be
reestablished. The new iMac in the den (also 10.6.8, quad, i5) did not lose
its Eudora info. It powered up as normal.

I lost everything in Eudora on the 27" iMac. All the years of followups,
e-mail addresses, notes, filters, folders, etc ‹ everything was gone, as tho
the app was brand new and had never been used on this machine.

After briefly panicking, I remembered that I have my OWC Mercury Elite AL
PRO external drive, which is a clone. Cloning is accomplished manually
whenever I want to do it. It had been cloned 3 days ago Christmas Night.
Since cloning, everything has been working as usual, and without incident
until the power failure. Aha! I can go into the clone and move the Eudora
info over to the home hard drive. But on the clone, the Eudora App came up
in the same fashion as it did on my iMac brand new, and no info, filters,
folders, address book etc.

The AL PRO is Partitioned 1tb for cloning and 1tb fore Time Machine
backups. TM is automatic every hour. When browsing the history in Time
Machine, the Eudora folder housed in DOCUMENTS disappeared on December 22,
2011, at 7:26AM. That is the last time it is present in TM. So Time Machine
has not been recognizing the Eudora folder since that date.

Can anyone guess what has happened? Do I need to be worried that my hard
drive is corrupted, or is it that Eudora somehow was no longer recognized by
TM because Eudora was corrupted? Since everything is gone (except what I can
find on Dec 22), I've decided to use a diff app which is not dependent on
Rosetta. But I'm more concerned about my hard drive. Any suggestions before
I run Permissions, etc?

Thanks for your help,
Donna

Re: Testing websites for IE on Mac

Yes, IE has had a huge, bad influence on the WWW. MS tend to put
non-standard features in it, and it also deals with errors in its' own
ways. This means that it's difficult, or perhaps impossible, for most
websites to work perfectly with both IE and standards-compliant browsers.

For more kicks,
<http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx> 181 errors, 139 warnings
<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home> 59
errors, 1 warning
;)

Hate Meeces to Pieces!

For once a nice, simple, mechanical problem - which I can't solve!

My Mighty Mouse's scroll ball keeps sticking - I've read the
instructions as below:

If the scroll ball on your Mighty Mouse has become discolored or
dirty, use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to
clean it. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to
rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling
feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or
side-to-side, hold the Mighty Mouse upside down and roll the ball
vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may
have collected on the internal hardware. "

I've followed the instructions using optical wipes and drying off with
rolling the mouse upside-down on clean paper.

This procedure works - for a couple of days before it starts sticking
again. I feel sure that the problem is probably fine cat hair wrapped
around a spindle or similar - this has occurred here with "ordinary"
common (or "garden") Microsoft mice.

So how does one dismantle a Mighty Mouse - it's clearly a press fit,
but how to you un-press it to get the top off?

Please don't suggest disposing of the pussycats - it's cold outside
and they like their comfort. Should I junk the wired Mighty Mouse and
get a Magic Mouse?

regards,
Ian

Yup, that was a well known issue with those. What I used to do, after
seeing an Apple genius do it, was to wet a cloth with window cleaner,
turn the mouse scroll ball side down and with the cloth on a flat
surface, roll the mouse around on the ball for however long it takes
I've had to sit there for close to 3 or 4 minutes doing this until it
worked again.

Oh yes, make sure you roll it around on a dry cloth before connecting it
again.
