Yes, you must go through Leopard. The precise requirement - just have the disk or actually install - I'm not sure. Probably just need the disc if you are willing to do a full wipe and install. If you want to actually "upgrade" you probably have to run the Leopard upgrade first. There was no Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade, which really ticked off the earliest "Intel" purchasers who righty felt snubbed.

Can I just install Snow Leopard, or do I have to go through Tiger and the Leopard, which of course means I have to find the disk for Leopard?

You can do it. I just upgraded from 10.4 to Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro 15.

Nice list. Thank you. Might you have ever written a review of ScrapIt? I'd be curious about your further impressions.

I would be curious about further opinions on any of these. I've commented on OpenOffice Base (aka NeoOffice and LibreOffice). I am directly familiar with both. Powerful, but slightly unstable and not simple. FrontBase is very interesting to me, but I would not class this as "simple" either. EagleData appears to be both very simple and free. I find that quite intriguing. Some have commented on iData and I think someone tried iDatabase, which looks nice for a $20 program.

I've been using this for years, from back in Classic days. I wish John was still actively developing it. It is really more of a Scrapbook replacement than a database manager, a bit like Evernote without the bells and whistles. One can password protect the datafile, but it is not encrypted and can be opened in a text reader.

What full featured relational database managers do you like? It seem everyone has heard of Filemaker Pro. It is powerful and now fully relational. Filemaker was the 1st DBM for the Mac and 1.0 came out during the Mac Plus days. It was flat file then, but very easy. Others came and went Foxbase, Double Helix...

My favorite has been 4th Dimension and though it can do anything you can imagine having a full programming language, I found it almost as easy to get a database started with 4D without much programming and fine-tune it as I learned the language and its peculiarities. The others like Foxbase and Double helix required a lot of programming to get anything usable.

Besides FMP and 4D are there any other full featured database managers for OS X other than MySQL/PHP and the likes?

On quick glance, it appears that FrontBase would qualify. So would OpenOffice Base, though maybe not without combining with other Open Source depending on what features. No server app for instance.

Howdy.

You can make a ring tone from almost any song in your iTunes music
library.

There are also several free applications available for making ring
tones.

Go to <http://www.macupdate.com/> and search on the term ring tone.

To make a ring tone from a song in iTunes you need to also have
GarageBand installed. Garage Band is a free application from Apple
installed when the OS is installed.

In GarageBand, there is a section named iPhone Ringtone.

You'll need to search online for the exact steps to to this. Also, if
you haven't used GarageBand before, when you first launch it take the
tutorial lesson that is part of it.

The basic idea is that you can drag a song from iTunes to GarageBand,
use the features in GarageBand to make the ring tone and to adjust the
length (duration) of the ring tone. I think 40 seconds is the maximum
allowed.

Then you drag the ring tone you've made back to iTunes where a new
section for ring tones is created. This way you can sync ring tones (1
or many) to your iPhone when connected to the Mac. Then on the iPhone
you use the Contacts to select the ring tone for an individual.

Yes, the iPhone has finally caught up to Android in some key areas. Here
is a link that will help:

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/389279/ios_5_finally_gets_custom_notification_tones/

Hopefully, Samsung or Google won't sue Apple over this.

Howdy.

I think I forgot an important point!

You may have to start with an MP3 music file in iTunes.

If you have a music file in a different format, it may not want to
import into GarageBand.

Perhaps a more experienced ring tone maker here can, as it were, chime
in on this topic.

I think you also need a relatively new version of GarageBand. I have
GarageBand '09 (v5.1) and, although it provides for exporting
GarageBand tunes to iTunes as ringtones, I see no way to get a file
(mp3, at least) into GarageBand.

I've had no problems with Snow Leopard, Parallels and Win XP SP3 on my
wife's iMac.
There is a downloads folder on the desktop and > everything < gets
downloaded to that folder. When in Windows mode (Coherence Mode in
Parallels) Windows has direct access to the same downloads folder.
So if a particular file is *.exe then it is definitely a Windows format
"executable" file that will do nothing under OSX. So you can certainly
mix and match files within a folder if you want.
Personally I have two subfolders within that - "OSX" and "Windows" - to
make the initial path a bit more civilized.

The problem lies with a Bootcamp partition and the NTFS format. As of now, OS X cannot write to that filesystem in it's native format. Certain add ons allow this.

Looking at that directory list, it appears that there are two versions
within that folder - a Windows one - swhx.exe (some sort of
self-extracting Windows archive, until you run it, not sure what it
launches....)
and a Flash document that could be run on both a Mac and PC - OED.swf

It would appear thus that the the Dictionary is an interactive Flash
file and not so much as an "application" as such.
The Flash application for Mac is also located in that directory -
flashplayer.bin
