Mike,

I'm from Germany and live very close to the Netherlands. When I go there, I turn off the roaming option. I then still can use Wifi. Usually every Hotel, McDonalds, a lot of bars and cafes etc. offer Wifi for little money. At least in Germany you don't find hotspots that are totally free.
When will you come to Europe? I need to see a genius at the Apple Store next week anyway. I could try to find out more.

Apple clarifies iTunes Match with new setup guide, walkthrough video

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple clarifies iTunes
Match with new setup guide, walkthrough video, FAQs via 9to5Mac by Mark
Gurman on 12/26/11

With the service launching in the United States last month, it may seem
a little late, but Apple has very recently launched a website dedicated
to iTunes Match. Previously, iTunes Match was given a slab of the
iTunes in the Cloud website.

The new iTunes Match website is very descriptive and tries to clear up
much of the confusion that has surrounded the product since its
announcement. Apple thoroughly explains the basics of iTunes Match with
a paragraph worded similarly to their previous literature on the
subject:

With iTunes in the Cloud, the music you buy from the iTunes Store
automatically appears on all your devices.1 And for music you haven't
purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. iTunes
Match is built right into iTunes on your computer and the Music app on
your iOS devices.2 It lets you store your entire collection in iCloud,
even music you've imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than
iTunes. When it's in iCloud, it's available on all your devices. So you
can enjoy all your music anywhere, anytime — on your iPhone, iPad, iPod
touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.

The company then explains how the service works by detailing the song
matching and uploading process. The new website, also spotted by
AppleBitch, features a clear setup guide, FAQ, and walkthrough video –
three things that publications have taken to themselves to create.
Apple seemingly wanted to create their own so users have the clearest
explanation possible directly from the company.

Apple also posted answers to frequently asked questions, settling the
downloading vs. streaming debate, and clarifying other concerns such as
what happens to songs when your one year iTunes Match subscription
expires. Read on for the full FAQ and Apple-made iTunes Match
walkthrough video.

Who can use iTunes Match?
Anyone with an Apple ID in the U.S and select other countries can use
iTunes Match. You also need iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your Mac or PC
and iOS 5.0.1 or later on your iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and
4th generation), or iPad.
Which music formats can iTunes Match handle?
You can match or upload music formats that can be played with iTunes.
That includes AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and more. How many
devices can iTunes Match support? iTunes Match supports up to 10
devices — including your computer, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple
TV. Will my playlists sync across devices? Yes. When you create, edit,
or delete a playlist on your Mac, PC, iPhone, or iPad, those changes
will sync across any iTunes Match-enabled device you own. However,
playlists with videos, voice memos, or PDF files will not sync.
Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when
played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud
download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as
they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later
even if you don't have a network connection. Apple TV only streams
songs.
Will iTunes Match songs download over 3G on my iOS device?
Yes. Go to Settings > Store on your device. Turn on Use Cellular Data.
If you'd rather download over Wi-Fi, turn it off.
What if I add new music to my library? Do I need to tell iTunes Match
to scan it?
No. iTunes Match will automatically rescan for content, so you don't
have to. Although you can force a refresh by choosing Store > Update
iTunes Match in iTunes.
What happens if I don't resubscribe after the first year? Will I lose
any upgraded songs?
No. Any songs you've upgraded or downloaded again are completely safe.
The only thing you lose is the central storage — iCloud will no longer
stream or download matched or uploaded songs to your devices.
How do I turn iTunes Match on?
On a Mac or PC, open iTunes and choose Store >Turn On iTunes Match.
Then turn on your iOS devices, tap Settings > Music > Turn On iTunes
Match. To turn on iTunes Match on Apple TV, go to Music > iCloud
Library.
Does the Apple ID I use for iTunes Match have to be an iCloud account?
No. If you've been using a separate Apple ID for purchases, that Apple
ID will also work for iTunes Match. You should use the Apple ID that is
associated with the majority of your music purchases.
Apple also posted their own walkthrough video that shows how to setup
iTunes Match on iTunes on the Mac and then how to access your music on
an iOS device like an iPad or Apple TV. You can click here to watch the
video.

Apple posted a support document last week that details iTunes Match
availability across the globe.

I feel oddly disappointed. It is described as a massive phishing attempt, but I never got any email from them.
And I have purchased an iPod Touch *and* an iPhone 4S from Apple this year. You would think that would make me a prime target. ;)

Hard Drives - Price Increase

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Howdy.

We've had some excellent discussion and links to information about
major changes in the hard drive industry. Consolidation, quality
control, reliability.

Now price.

There seems to be a very major price increase happening right now for
hard drives.

This is being ascribed to flooding in Thailand that has impacted and
closed factories for both Seagate and Western Digital.

I'm not sure how much the recent buyouts of Hitachi and Samsung's drive
divisions have had to to with price increases but I suspect that has
contributed.

Yes prices have gone up substantially. I bought several 2TB and 3TB drives
for both the office and home before the went up and they are between 50-75%
more than I paid.

To bring it back to Macs if you request anything other than the standard
models the Build to Order time goes way up, what is usually 3-5 days goes
up to 2-3 weeks in some cases because of the shortage(s)....

Re: email apps for PCs

Posted by: "Oneal Neumann" wardell.h.s@gmail.com   newalander

I have a friend in Hungary and we talked about emails. I was (sort of) bragging about having a Macintosh. I told her that I had 8 email addies and that my Apple Mail is configured so that when I click Get Mail (which has been installed on Message Viewers toolbar) all extant emails come tumbling down, mostly into Inbox. The others go to a special folder that I have set up for incomers from this group.

(I use Get Mail because I dont like my emails dropping by uninvited. Distracting.)

Going to websites to access ones emails sucks. She says that her Googlemail account is nearly maxed, so shes faced with having to dump a bunch of her emails.

Can I get recommendations on apps that are easy to work with? I presume that she will be able to download all currently existing emails. The apps should be workable internationally. Furthermore, the PC email apps should also be Mac-compatible. Im afraid that I dont know what OS shes currently using. Shouldnt matter, I guess.

She has a Dell and will get a Mac sometime in TwentyTwelve. At that point she will want to transfer her emails, along with all her important files, to her new comp.

Thanx. Oneal

I would say use Thunderbird. It's open source and the database it creates on your computer is XML based. So all you've to do is copy the database onto the mac when you're moving from a PC, and you're done.

You can configure I guess any number of accounts - POP and IMAP, and if you want to move your emails to a local folder from your IMAP account, you can do that as well. By far, I find it the most flexible program. I use the Apple Mail app only because it provides access into Yahoo and looks similar to the interface I have on my iPad. Otherwise, when I have to send out an HTML formatted email, I prefer using Thunderbird, coz it makes me feel confident that the readers will get to see what I am sending.

BTW, thunderbird is a program by Mozilla, the same non-profit that also makes the ever-so-popular Firefox

Arjun

Re: Defragment Or Not To Defragment?

> As the prior thread made quite clear to me, this is an discussion where semantics are important. Everyone is not talking about the same thing. File defragmentation, which used to be the primary goal of 'defragging', is pretty much obsolete in all modern OSs, not just in Macs. However, there are other optimizations, such as free-space consolidation, FAT optimization and file arrangements, that can be helpful depending on operational circumstances. I think we established, at least anecdotally, that running full optimization with something like iDefrag DID speed up some functions and can solve certain particular problems. tod

This is distinctly contrary (with all due respect) to Denver Dan, who stated --see below-- that free-space fragmentation was irrelevant.

Not knowing any better, notwithstanding my unease over having 54% fragmentation rate of my harddrives free space, I deferred to his opinion.

I suppose that a medical analogy might be someone being told (by a doctor) not to worry that all of a sudden he has become blimped because, after all, he does not feel any pain.

In the iDefrag analysis report there are two sections: Volume Contents and Volume Directory. In the latter section there are four subsections, each of which has its own fragmentation reading. All subsections read 0% fragmentation, save the last subsection (Free Space) which has a 54% fragmentation reading.

Given the huge difference, I felt that something was amiss. According to Tod Hopkins, clearly so; according to Denver Dan, nothing to sweat over.

Denver Dan focuses on the Files subsection in the Volume Contents section. According to iDefrag, my Files subsection reading is 0% fragmentation.

Dan says that that is what matters, that so very few files (as a percentage of the total) are fragmented to any degree, that there is basically nothing to worry about.

Can the respective posters further weigh in? Im not trying to [re]start a fight, I just need some sort of clarity on this issue, something more than an agree-to-disagree.

Unable to install Adobe Flash Player

Hi, group,
I have tried numerous approches to installing AFP. Beginning with running (and then re-running) the uninstall app. All to no avail. I heve tried it (several versions, as I have a PPC proccessor), in several locations, including the app file and the desktop. When I come to a video in, say, Yahoo, it says "missing plug in" or some such. This leads to the Adobe site, and downloads, etc. By following the machinations, I eventually get to the suggestion that version (I believe) 10.XX is what I need. no such luck. I have tried several, thinking the latest may still have some conflict. Nope.

Any help will be appreciated.
(As an aside, this all began with Randy's suggestion that uninstalling AFP might eliminate "Beachballing" - and it did! However, now I need it again, without the problems from before.)

John, that is correct, however they list (and suggest) earlier versions for 10.5. They just do not work for me. And thus my request for help. If not AFP, for 10.5 PPC, then what?

Thanks for the link, Dan. However, I have tried that process many times - and again just now, after meticulosly uninstalling and trashing every vestige of FP that I could find. After the download of the latest 10.3 version, it acts as though it isn't even there. I am probably missing some basic thing, but I am cluless as to what it is.

Tiger Help

I have a friend that I'm trying to help do a backup of her hard drive to an external drive. She is running Tiger on an older G4. I'm not familiar with Tiger and would appreciate some help.

1) First, I need to format the external hard drive. Does Tiger have a disk utility to do this?

2) If yes, what format should be used? HFS+?

3) Does anyone know offhand if Carbon Copy Cloner will work with Tiger? I can perhaps find out from their website.

4) Once the backup is complete what program/method should I use to import pictures and certain documents into her husband's new MacBook Air running Lion?

Thanks much for any help.....Jim

Yes it does. Disk Utility. It's in the Utility Folder.

Yes and yes.

The Air has a usb connection. Connect the external drive to the Air and locate the files you want and drag them to the appropriate folders on the Air.

Backup Harddrive Not Loading to Desktop

I have a LaCie Harddrive connected to my iMac. Its supposed to load to the desktop automatically every morning when I turn on my computer. The last couple of mornings it quit loading automatically. When I turn the HD off then back on, it will then load the HD icon onto my desktop.

I've changed nothing. Everything, including the LaCie & iMac, is connected to a APC Back-UPS protector I turn on in the morning and off at night.

The HD is about 4 - 41/2 yrs old. Is this a sign of something going wrong?
