Howdy.

Yes, difficult to want to buy a product that was last updated in 2007
now almost 5 years ago.

I own Quicken 2007 but have been looking at other products. Intuit
doesn't feel like a trustworthy company now.

This is a category of app that has been a "holy grail" forever: everyone seems to want one but it's impossible to get just right. At least not for everyone. I think it's simply not a one-size-fits-all type of product. Going back to IBM Tornado and earlier, Personal Information Managers have been a really tough category. Hard to make, and hard to sell.

Evernote seems to be on top right now, but for a variety of reasons, it doesn't quite work for me. I think the hardest part of these apps is to make them both comprehensive in function and simple enough to meet the primary goal of "simplifying" life. They must do both or they don't really do the job. I've thought about this category for years and I've never seen anything that has even half the key characteristics I've dreamed of in the perfect app.

Cheers,

As the prior thread made quite clear to me, this is an discussion where semantics are important. Everyone is not talking about the same thing. File defragmentation, which used to be the primary goal of "defraggin", is pretty much obsolete in all modern OS's, not just Mac. However, there are other optimizations, such as free space consolidation, FAT optimization, and file arrangements, that can be helpful, depending on operational circumstances. I think we established, at least anecdotally, that running full optimization with something like iDefrag DID speed up some functions and can solve certain particular problems.

It is an esoteric debate, and not something most users need to be concerned with, much like the current state of malware on the Mac, or the difference between "cores" and "processors". It's not that there is nothing to discuss. Just because most users need not concern themselves does not mean there is nothing to consider and understand.

Cheers,
tod

PPC Mac Mini
10.4.11

Hello All:

My Activity Monitor is showing this:
Process ID #: Ø
Process Name: kernel_task
User: root
%CPU: .5
Virtual Memory: 878.57 MB

Since this has shown up, my Mac has slowed WAY down. What is it? How do I
get rid of it?

Thanks for the help!

That's the basic OS process that controls everything else. Note that the
CPU is low considering what it's doing. What is top of the list if you sort
on CPU?

Testing websites for IE on Mac

Posted by: "Arjun Singhal" arjunsinghal@yahoo.com   arjunsinghal

Hi All

I was working to re-design our website during the last few days and I was using a micro sized windows laptop along with my new Macbook Pro, while writing code, to ensure it was looking okay in Internet Explorer. (We just did a re-design after a serious spam attack, and the new design bombed out on IE).

Is there a good solution to testing the site for IE on a Mac? I do not want to run VM Ware all the time, because Windows is resource heavy - and it literally drains the battery if you're not plugged in.

Regards,
Arjun

The closest you're going to get to IE with Safari is to enable developer menu, then you can select a user agent, which includes IE, all releases AFAIK.

As far as what kind of testing you can do with this? I don't know.

Howdy.

Harry pretty much said it.

The Safari web browser (along with other Apple brand programs) has a
feature that you can turn on.

It used to be called the Debug menu but is now called the Develop menu.

Turn it on in Safari preferences and a new menu appears in Safari
called Develop.

One of the features on the Develop menu is called User Agent.

Use it to change the "personality" of Safari to mimic a different web
browser.

Choices are (in current Safari version):

Safari 5.1 Mac and Windows
Safari 5.06 Mac

Safari iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone, Touch, iPad

IE 9.0, 8.0, and 7.0

Firefox 4.0.1 Mac and Windows

Opera 11.11 Mac and Windows

Good luck.

... interesting site.... the landing page and product description page
are a direct "copy" of the standard eBay product/item pages I'm used to
seeing.

So these guys are a factory that manufactures look-alikes and they also
have the cohones to call them "MacBook Air" too... only in China you say....

Not to digress from the subject too much, the model I glanced over looks
like a nifty little netbook similar to the dual processor Intel Atoms
currently on the market here for around $300, all stylishly encased in a
MacBook Air look-alike case, complete with an "Apple" logo. Price in U$
458 if you buy just one. + shipping + customs brokerage + duties + taxes
on import...
Certainly an attractive unit. Comes with 2GB RAM and a 60 GB SSD, so no
moving parts hard drive. And the peripherals all sport an "Apple" logo
too. Not specific, it says Windows 7 but does not elaborate which
flavour it is.
Perhaps the cases are "genuine" but factory seconds that did not make it
past quality control for the "real Apple" product... or not...

Someone will also find a way to hack an OSX system onto one of these
they way it was/is done on the proverbial "hackintoshes" using similar
intel hardware based netbooks and mini notebooks.

Shipping costs to the US start at $0 with EMS to $127 with TNT

Big thing at the end of the day will be the total landed costs for the $
amount, but further issues will most likely be after sales support and
warranty coverage, and replacement parts, if any would be available.
Other than that, would you trust your credit card to their payment system?

For my $ after all those steps, I can have a real MacBook Air, though
pre-owned, last generation, with still some Appecare on it, already
running OSX Leopard or Lion, with a virtualization app to run a genuine
copy of Win XP or 7, or even 8 (whenever it comes out)...

Food for thought...

If the actual product bears an Apple logo, they are in violation of Apple's
Intellectual Property rights and probably copyrights too.

Hey, it happens from time to time. People should realize what phishing is, if they don't know. It's fairly obvious these days, but many people do fall for it.

Look at the originating domain in the from email address. Usually a big clue here. Banks DO NOT have gmail or yahoo accounts. Neither do reputable electronic storefronts.

Banks or e-services will NEVER ask you to change your password online, nor, ask for banking info, social security numbers, phone numberetc.

COMMON SENSE people.

You'd be surprised at the number of people that overlook the obvious. Believe me IT IS obvious 99.9%+ of the time!
