Howdy.

Have you tried using a maintenance utility like OnyX to delete all
cache files? The idea being that perhaps a cache file is still trying
to be active and interfere with things.

Important with OnyX to get the version recommended for the specific
version of the OS X you have.

Thanks for reminding me to run Yasu, which I hadn't done in a while:

No experience with OnyX, but I've heard good things about it.

Finally, a question I can respond to!

I had problems with two of my LaCie drives not mounting (at different
times). I contacted LaCie, and tech support suggested the power block
might be the problem. I connected the block on the drive that was
mounting to the one that wasn't, and it mounted right away. So, the
problem was clearly the power block.

if you only have one drive, it will be tough to test if the power
block's the problem.

I hope this is helpful.

Howdy.

A "power block" aka transformer or power brick can be replaced.

OWC has a selection of them. The amp and volt ratings need to match up
and there are some devices that have selectable settings for these
requirements.

<http://eshop.macsales.com/>

Note also that when an external drive seems to fail the problem is
often with the case, the ports, the cables, the power brick, and the
bridge chip in the case. The drive may be OK and can be removed from
failed case and put in a new case or a drive dock to use.

Hi there,

When I go into SETTINGS>Messages and then activiate iMessage to the on
position, a few seconds later it will turn off. Any ideas?

Do you have iCloud registered, and your data services turned on?

I don't believe that iMessage is an iCloud service, but a portion of iOS 5.

Hi there

Yes, iCloud is registered. How do I check if the data services is on - just
to confirm?

Thanks.

It should be showing the "E" icon if you don't have access to 3G or the '3G' icon next to where you get the network. Also, if you're on wi-fi, these icons might not show until wi-fi is turned off. But if you're logged on with wi-fi, and having internet connectivity, it should work.

You can try to open a site in safari to confirm this. When i first registered for iMessage, it did ask me to register my phone number and email address where I could receive my iMessages. Registering an email address is necessary for iMessage to work.

Watermark question

Posted by: "Donna Ellis" dellis70@tampabay.rr.com   dellis551

Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:24 pm (PST)

Happy New Year, Mac buddies!

I am running OS 10.6.8, with iPhoto 9.2.1

I also have iWork and latest business version MS Office 2011. My
software also includes an app called Photo Booth 3.0.3.

A friend sent directions for how to create a watermark thru text
edit, but the options she described are not available on my version
(hers is an older version and older OS).

Would anyone here have advice for making a watermark? If possible, I
don't want to purchase another app at this time.

Thank you in advance,
Donna

Howdy and Happy New.

Donna, check MacUpdates and search on "watermark." there are many
items including shareware, freeware, and commercial items.

Also check for plugins for iPhoto. There are both shareware and
commercial plugins for iPhoto for adding watermarks.

Adobe Photoshop can add a watermark and Photoshop with CS5 has a new
watermark panel.

Adobe Photoshop Elements, the more basic version, can also, I believe,
add a watermark but I have no experience with it.

Donna, do you use LR 3 or Aperture 3? they allow you to do watermarks i.e © 2012 Doug Yelmen.
another choice is iWatermark.

Re: Defragment Or Not To Defragment?

I think there is some confusion about the way iDefrag measures free space fragmentation and the significance of these numbers. I can't speak to that.

What others have pointed out, and my experience would tend to corroborate, is that some specific large file transfer functions require that the necessary free space be "contiguous." As far as I know "fragmentation" of free space isnot a performance issue per se, but if available free space is sufficiently fragmented that continuous space can't be found for certain functions, you may run into problems. As I drive becomes full, finding large stretches of free space gets harder, and defragmenting the available free space may become more significant in avoiding certain problems.

Cheers,
tod

File defragmentation, which used to be the primary goal of 'defragging', is pretty much obsolete in all modern OSs, not just in Macs. However, there are other optimizations, such as free-space consolidation, FAT optimization and file arrangements, that can be helpful depending on operational circumstances. I think we established, at least anecdotally, that running full optimization with something like iDefrag DID speed up some functions and can solve certain particular problems. tod
