I guess we're talking different OS versions here. I'm still using
10.5.8. The Calculator I'm talking about, that comes up in a 10.5.8
Spotlight search (unsurprisingly) is an application which Apple put
right there in the Applications folder.

That's all I get in 10.7.2 as well! There seems to be no special Calculator app here. None listed in Spotlight either. Just the one.

10.5.8 here.
So what's Keith using? I did wonder if the Calculator app has changed since
10.5 but it seems not (unless 10.6 is different, despite 10.5 and 10.7
being the same, which seems unlikely).

Yes, Otto, it IS the same as the one inside Applications. At least on OS
10.6.8. I have so many calculators around, I've never even looked at
that one, but...I find I really like it.
I think I'll put a copy in my Dock...

Strange ... you have many, but have never tried the built-in one before?
Don't forget to try out the different views and the convert function. ;)

Well, my MBP is running 10.6.8 and I just checked the Calculator on
that system it is still the app in the Applications folder, but it IS
a different one than on my G5 PowerPC running 10.5.8. It sounds as if
Otto's calculator is the same as I have on the G5, though. Is it
possible that Apple moved back and forth on what they installed?
For the record, the calculator in 10.5.8 is Universal application and
is v4.2.
The calculator in 10.6.8 is an Intel application, v4.5.3

Well, that's me. All the ones of which I speak are hand-held. Plenty of
them around. Most with a number of more functions than the Applications
version, but...back then I was finishing my engineering career, and
needed a LOT more than I do now.

Whoa! I just looked at the top of the screen menu bar. Wow.
I just moved the app over to the Dock. I'll be using that in preference
to my handheld, no doubt. I appreciate the words.

10.6.8 here:
I get the regular calculator.
Type the name of any one of your applications in the spotlight search box, click, the application is launched.
If he has another calculator installed it could be the one launched rather than the standard one.

Just a point of information. The failure of duplex printing on my brother

The two finger gesture is for the trackpad, while on the magic mouse, its a one finger gesture. It nowhere looks as cool as safari, but it is there. I realized it only after I got stuck trying to make the butter fly from my magiglassical mouse

Mac app store updates keep repeating

Thu Dec 22, 2011 10:36 am (PST)
I have several apps from the Mac app store and have just noticed that when I update from the store the app does not get marked as updated. When I next select updates the same apps are there even though the update has been applied. Today I had 31 apps to update going back over 3 months. 28 of these had already been updated.
Any ideas?

Yah, I had this issue at one point. There is a .plist file to trash, but I can't recall which one. It should be obvious that it's attached to the app store though.

Should do it. I had 2 that were pending that really were not. Had just not gotten around to trashing the preference file. Just did, restarted the store, and they were gone.
