My method is similar but I use a damp flacecloth/flannel (warm water, wrung
out) held in one hand with the mouse upside down in the other. I have found
no need to dry the mouse afterwards.

You don't have to do that with an optical mouse but with a mouse with
a ball in it, the best cleaner is acetone as it removes invisible
gunge from the mouse.

If you pull down the Edit menu from the menubar, the Undo command
tells you what will be undone. For instance, I'm in Mail right now and
just deleted a message; the first item in the Edit menu right now is
"Undo Delete Message."
I noticed this in Finder after my files disappeared, so I tried it.
Again I got a progress window showing that it was redoing the copy of
the files. The progress bar marched through all 4675 files but, in the
end, I still had only 89 files in my folder.
All in all, nothing was really lost here but it was a good learning
experience. I think.

Open the Edit menu if you're in doubt what Cmd-z will do; you'll see Undo
or Redo <whatever>. Each time you invoke the action, <whatever> changes
appropriately.

Maybe, you waited too long before trying it?
So, I take it that you found the files...where were they?

Howdy.
In Lion, I test copied a file from one drive to another and then used
Command z to undo the copy.
Something new in the Finder for me but clearly one to be a bit careful
of using.

I was able to copy them (again) off the original CompactFlash card
that evening. The biggest surprise in this whole thing, to me, is that
the files just vanish rather than dumping to the trash.
As DD says in another post: something to be cautious about using.

I assume OSX simply bypasses the Trashcan, and just makes the file invisible in the directory...same thing, I guess, that would be done if the files had been moved to the trash, and then the trash emptied...just without going through that process.

contacts : address book sync question
Posted by: "Roger Harris" skunktown@gmail.com robo_booger
Fri Dec 30, 2011 6:30 am (PST)
I have a (new) iPhone 4s, an iPad 2, and a macBook running Snow Leopard.
Last night I imported my backed-up phone numbers from Verizon into my iPhone. It then synched with iCloud and I had all of the contacts from my iPad, which I normally sync through iTunes with my macBook.
Then I signed on to my iCloud website and cleaned up all the contacts - repairing, eliminating dupes, consolidating etc.
So, my question now is: When I next sync my iPad (or iPhone) with a cable to iTunes on my macBook, what will happen? Will the newly consolidated and repaired contacts overwrite the contacts in my Address Book on my macBook, or vice versa? Obviously, I would prefer the former and I'm a little afraid to undo all the time I spent last night.
TIA, Roger

Roger, have you turned iCloud on in System Preferences on your Mac? I would do that first and make sure all the appropriate boxes are checked.
Then check your Address Book on your Mac to see if the changes you made in your iPad/Cloud has in fact propagated to your Mac via iCloud. Do not sync your Contacts on your devices to your Mac unless you are happy with what you see in your Address Book, because when you sync, it has been my experience that your Mac Address Book will overwrite your iPad/iPhone Contacts.

Nick,
Under System Preferences, there is a Mobile Me option, but no iCloud option. Mobile me "is no longer accepting new subscribers". This whole iCloud thing is inscrutable, not well explained by Apple, and indefensible that it is not fully functional with Snow Leopard.
The experience that you describe below is precisely what I fear. Now, it wouldn't be the end of the world - I could redo all my work, but then I would lose all my phone numbers so that info would have to be manually added.

That is normal since you don't have a spinning mecanism that can break.
I did some research when getting my new laptop with SSD, in June. I found that the only weak link of SSD drives is the controller, which can fail. Apparently, this was a big issue not so long ago. And severe loss of speed would occur within a year. But controllers have vastly improved and a drive can now survive much longer than the life of the computer itself.
If you want to keep your SSD drive in good shape, some defragmenting/optimization once or twice a year won't hurt and it will preserve its efficiency.

Thanks, Don. Sorry to have omitted that info. We are on battery back up,

IMac sudden switch off

I have a 27inch iMac, mid-2010 model. Running OSX 10.6.8, 12GB RAM
It is connected to a large capacity UPS power supply.
Occasionally the entire machine just switches off. Immediate. Instant. No kernel panic, no overheating. Just off.
It is not the UPS as the RAID array also connected stays on.
I have AppleCare so I guess the next thing is to take it in, but handling a 27inch brute is not easy!
I have looked at the Crash log but it is just streams of numbers, nothing seems to be obviously wrong.
I have only recently run Onxyx and also updated permissions so it shouldn't be anything like that, and all software is to the latest level.
Before I make a 150 mile round trip, anyone have any ideas?

Take it in. You may have a problem with and/or defective power supply
inside the iMac.
Call AppleCare BEFORE taking it in and mention the distance. They may
have an closer location for you to try.

What worked for me was to get the popup open (and I can't see the whole popup in Lion in VMWare Fusion even on a 27" screen), then use Command-space to open Spotlight. There, I search for Grab and clicked to start it up. Then I used its Command-Shift-W shortcut to click on the popup. It did in fact copy the entire popup.

My question to the group is, does anyone have experience with using
memory cards for taking full HD 1080 videos? And what length of video
can be recorded on a 16GB High Speed Memory card?
A quick answer is 160 minutes. Based on HD video being 1920x1080 with
MP4 HD codec. See:
http://duracellflash.com/capacitych art.htm
Here is a good link to give you more information on Secure Digital Cards
for your handycam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Secure_Digital# UHS_Speed_ Class
Another one I found as I got a deal on these at my local store ($5 for a
4 GB card):
As it turns out, it is an "ok" card as it's not the fastest, but will be
fine for my scanner and digital photobook, not so great for the digital
camera as it is slower than other cards. The one I got was a Class 4
card, and for shooting the biggest and/or RAW files I need something
faster. My other cards are class 6 and faster. In a nutshell, the class
category is the data write rate per second in MB, so a Class 10 card is
rated at 10 MB per second or faster in transfering the data from camera
to card.
