Howdy.

No idea.

On my SeaMonkey, after the Google of let it snow, the screen begins to
snow and get foggy. When I press Option and keep it pressed and press
the mouse button and drag, it cleans the snow and fog off (like a
windshield scrapper)

That's what it was, I wasn't letting the snow accumulate. If you resize the window, the screen fogs and a button in blue appears to (defrost). I imagine this will speed up the process!

You may as well be - the only snow around here is on Google. On the
other hand it's been raining for the last week; the forecast says we
may see a glint of sunshine on Christmas Day if we're lucky.

I'm mystified too, but if the files need to go into Windows and the Windows
folders are not accessible to Safari it's all moot, isn't it?

Two tactics that I have used successfully:
1. Keep reclicking the reload button *without* entering any text. In some systems, this will produce simpler and easier captchas.
2. Use the Speech button to hear what the captcha sounds like before trying to enter it.

Shortened link:

Got it years ago as a bonus for joining a book club. Fascinating, but extremely cumbersome to use.

The list has nothing that resembles an install or a program for a Mac. At this point I would call them or take the package back where you got it and tell them that there is no Mac related files in this package. Did you actually read anywhere on the package that the disk will load a program on the Mac? At a minimum, you can call the company and ask them about it.

Unfortunately, "Dictionary.app" does not include the Oxford English Dictionary (OED.)

It does include:

New Oxford American Dictionary
Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus
Apple Dictionary
Wikipedia - English
Oxford Thesaurus of English
Oxford Dictionary of English

The OED is a huge multi-volume beast and is probably the largest and most complete dictionary in the world. Also very expensive!

For a very interesting book about how the OED was created, read:

The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of The Oxford English Dictionary

Used paperback copies are free from Amazon (you pay the shipping.)

I can HIGHLY recommend the DVD version of that book. The reader is wonderful. I use books like that on my commutes to work and on trips. I got my copy from the San Diego library system. I see that you can buy it at Amazon at <http://www.amazon.com/Professor-Madman-Publisher-HarperAudio-Unabridged/dp/B004NP0X1O/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1324345575&sr=8-29>

You can also more easily get Kindle versions of it. But it is a spellbinding book, and really well narrated on Audio by Simon Winchester himself.

No, MS Office 2004 did not have VBA capability. That is why a lot of
people kept 2004 until 2011 came out.

Howdy.

Microsoft Office for Macintosh X, 2004, and 2011 all have macro
capabilities which depend on Visual Basic.

Microsoft Office for Macintosh 2008 did not have macro capabilities
because MS did not include Visual Basic with it.

This is why many people skipped MS Office 2008 for Mac.

A previous poster just made a simple type and inadvertently typed 2004
instead of 2008.

Simple database

I am looking for a simple basic database, I have Googled but not found much. Maybe I am phrasing the question wrong, or maybe there really is a limited choice!

I only need a very basic, limited programme, nothing as complex as Filemaker. Bento 4 seems to be the only option - anyone have any comments on this or suggestions for a better, simpler, cheaper programme?

I did find one reference to a database within OpenOffice - can anyone supply more information? Does it work, is it any good, can I download just that part rather than the entire OpenOffice???

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

I use Bento. It is a much simpler version of Filemaker, is easy to set up and use.

Download the Bento trial. It's a great little database program. Well worth it.

Open Office/Libre Office/Neo Office are all *free*. Why hesitate unless
you're on dial-up or a strict download limit?

Do you already have good apps for the other functions included in the above?

Apple Wins Partial Victory on Patent Claim Over Android Features

A federal agency ruled on Monday that a set of important features commonly found in smartphones are protected by an Apple patent, a decision that could force changes in the way Google's Android phones function.

The ruling, by the United States International Trade Commission, can be appealed. But it is one of the most significant so far in a growing array of closely watched patent battles being waged around the globe by nearly all of the major players in the mobile industry.

The ruling was only a partial victory for Apple because the commission overruled an earlier decision in Apple's favor in the case, involving a patent related to how software is organized internally on mobile devices. It would have been harder for the defendant in the case — HTC, one of the world's largest makers of smartphones that run the Android system — to adapt its devices to avoid infringing that patent, legal experts said.
