This is my problem...I do machine embroidery. I store all my designs in specific folders...angels, patriotic, winter, etc. Many free designs are offered on the net. I want to download them to a specific folder...not Downloads. In Windows I have the option to save them and browse to the folder I want. I can't seem to do that on my Mac. Also, if I want to download a zipped file, it always goes to Downloads with no options.

I know what you mean. I used to be able to do the same thing in
windows..direct my downloads to a specific folder. Now I have hte extra step
of getting it out of downloads and into the folder where I want it to
reside.

I use Firefox.

Right click on the download link and select Save Download File As….
Then choose where you want to save it.

Printer problems

Posted by: "hester reik" dhreik@gmail.com   drhester_06107

Gurus:

I have a simple Brother Printer, B&W HL5370DW. It stopped printing 2-sided
copies and now I cannot print at all :(. I inserted the CD, tried to
reinstall the drivers, etc and my mac does not 'read' the printer. I
followed all instructions precisely for wireless install: connected the
printer to airport and somehow the error message I got was hugely confusing.

It said something like, "More than one device is seen" but then didn't list
any of them. Firewall is disabled, which is the only 'workaround' the
on-line brother site suggested.

Something is wrong. The printer works fine from hubby's machine, only
2-sided no longer works. This 2-sided issue is only since downloading
'updates', though my inability to print is only since trying to fix (today)
the 2-sided issue.

Thanks in advance.
Going out to walk and clear my head after failing for 2 hours to fix this.
Will check all responses in a while.

Howdy.

Try the standard Reset Printing System command in the Print & Fax (in
Lion called Print & Scan) panel in System Preferences.

The Reset Printing System command will delete all of your printer
queues in the printer list. It does not delete any software,
extensions, or drivers.

Then restart your computer.

I suggest checking online for updated Brother printer drivers and not
using the included Brother CD disc which may be out of date.

Also use Software Update. Apple recently released some new Brother
printer drivers via Software Update.

Also check the Brother web site for newer printer drivers.

I have a Brother color laser HL-4070CDW duplex printer which is doing
fine printing (and duplex printing) from Lion. However, I have it
connected by wired Ethernet and not via wireless.

I have the same printer.
Software Update recently downloaded new Brother printer drivers.
Check there.

How is it connected?
USB?

Does "2-sided" appear in the print dialog choices?

When I'm not using a USB cable it says "printer offline"
I'm going to try all suggestions and restart.

Howdy.

The Reset Printing System command has been discussed here many times.

However, it is in recent versions of Mac OS a hidden command. It
earlier versions it appeared on a menu when Print panel was open.

Hover your mouse arrow in the Printer list column and then press
Command right click (or left click) to see a contextual menu. It will
have just the one Reset command on it.

As I mentioned, this resets the underlying Unix CUPS system and often
fixes problems. It's often useful, for unknown reasons, after system
updates.

The reset will make all of your printer queues disappear and this is
what it is supposed to do. No software or drivers or extensions are
deleted.

The "printers" you see in the printers list in Print & Scan are
actually print queues each of which is linked to a printer drivers.

If the printer is a USB connected printer, they almost always reset
themselves automatically and will reappear in the Printer list.
Sometimes a restart of Mac will help this process.

If the printer is connected via Ethernet, then you may need to click
the plus button to add the printer and the specifics of how may vary
from printer to printer.

If it's a WiFi connected printer, I can't help further. My Brother
laser has WiFi but I haven't been able to make that work. I admit,
however, I haven't tried very hard to make it work.

Good luck H!

Thanks, Dan and as usual you were right. I spoke w Apple care and stooopid me was too nervous to remember (trying to follow your advice w/o someone holding my hand) to control-click to get options. Anyway, it worked and now I'm connected wirelessly with USB port running from printer to Airport base station.

Before it was via an Ethernet cable, but Applecare doesn't have the protocol information to do it via ethernet, so I just kept it as it is/was.

Two-sided is still not working. But at this point, I don't care. Like the man who went to the Rabbi complaining about his noisy house filled with many boisterous children. Rabbi tells him to add a goat. He can't understand why but obeys. Goes back the next week and complains again. Rabbi tells him to add a cow. Again he obeys with disbelief. THe house is worse, of course. This goes on for weeks with multiple animals added. Finally the rabbi tells him to get rid of all the animals he added.

The man follows the instructions and sighs "Ah, how peaceful it is here."

Hope that wan't too much OT.

As an aside, Dan, I've been using a wireless HP Photosmart Premium for about 6 months. It's pretty straightforward to reset and re-add. As simple as clicking the plus symbol and my machine sees it almost instantly, as a Bonjour printer.

Hi everyone

My first macsupportcentral post!

I was looking at Boot Camp to Install Windows and it said Windows 7, nothing about Windows XP.

Do I have to buy windows 7 and can I get the home edition or do I need to go for Pro.
I have a couple of programs that only with windows.
I do have Windows XP here at home.

I was into Linux but got so mad I got a MacBook Pro in November.

Hi Denton,

Good Day.

To start with , try the free virtualization software named Virtual Box.
You can install your exsisting Windows XP.
If you feel it didn't do your Job opt for Windows 7.
It is better to go Windows 7 as i5 or i7 processor perform better in Win7
as they are latest architecture than XP.

As Imran mentionied, try virtualization software first. I run Win 7 directly on a Bootcamp partition plus, I use the same partition through virtualization using VMware Fusion. Under 10.7, and the new Bootcamp software, yes, Windows 7 is the only Windows supported right now.

I would suggest that unless you really, really need some piece of Windows software, stick with the OS X side as much as you can. I think you'll find that once you start using and learning it, you won't want to go back.

Cheers!

Problem installing Oxford English Dictionary on the Mac

Who is using the Oxford English Dictionary on the Mac and could give me some hints regarding the installation?

It's a Windows/Mac CD-ROM Version (Second Edition, v. 4.0). I can't find any Mac installer in the package. The only thing which resembles an installer is a swhx.exe file, obviously only for Windows.

You need to tell a little bit more. What OS are you using? Mac OS for a long while was offering it's own version of the Oxford English Dictionary which is automatically loaded when you install the OS.

Looking at the requirements on the website they specify OS X 10.4 or 10.5. This may or may not be the latest OS X versions supported but I would get in touch with them to verify that it will run on 10.6.

The OS X Dictionary includes the 'New Oxford American Dictionary' not the
'Oxford English Dictionary'. You can choose British pronunciation but not a
British dictionary.

Is there a folder on the CD called Mac or OS X, or a file with the .pkg
extension?

Okay Anna, you already should have a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary on your hard drive. It is located in applications and called Dictionary.app. You be surprised what this application can do. It offers more that just being a dictionary.

However, to answer your question concerning the CD. Without seeing what is on that disc it is hard to tell you what to look for. However, in most cases there is generally a bunch of files for a Windows installation but just one for Macintosh. Is there a ZIP file on that disc or is there a file on the disk that has an ending like .app? Anything that has an .exe ending is for Windows.

Going to the website does not really help unless you want to call them and ask how to install it on your Mac.

It does say that, but if you read a little further down it says that they have successfully run it on Lion, so I have to assume that it also will run on Snow Leopard.

Now I have both a desktop (24" iMac) and a 15" MacBook Pro. With the
newest machines having Thunderbolt, which so readily connects to
everything with just one wire, I think the ideal would be a MacBook
Air connecting with the one cable to everything else, i.e. external
drives, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. It would be what the PowerBook
Duo promised, but so much nicer. Now, with such a setup there would
be no need to sync two computers.
