Blank documents keep downloading from Yahoo

Is anyone else receiving occasional blank documents downloaded automatically while visiting or using Yahoo? This is only a Yahoo happening. If I stay out of Yahoo it does not happen. Not that it is more than just a nuisance.

I opened a blank document in TexEdit and got the text:

I tried it tonight.

It decompressed just fine and ran just fine.

It may be that you got a corrupted download.

Boot from your OS X installer disk, and run Disk Utility/Repair Disk.

If you are running LIon, you will need to boot from the Recovery Volume:
Restart your computer and hold down command-R to boot into the
Recovery Volume.

Maybe I did get a bad download, but not going to risk it again! Took hours to rebuild the system!!!

Think I'll go for a better known DB such as Bento!

Simple database design apps are rare indeed on both Windows and Mac. There are two major products: Access and Filemaker. The only "small" app is Bento on Mac. Frankly, I don't know of any good, small database apps on Windows. You can build "manually" using widely available open source SQL tools, but this is beyond most people's expertise.

OpenOffice includes "Base" which is indeed a powerful database environment, competitive in functionality with Access and FileMaker, but no where near as simple or stable. It does have wizards that will build a simple, personal database for your own purposes. This may be all you need. It's totally free and you can give the database file to anyone else to use with the same free software (and export to other formats). Once you get beyond simple (sharing, relational, complex forms, SQL), Base simply does not have end-user friendly tools.

Filemaker is by far the easiest and most powerful end-user database app. Bento is Filemaker lite. Great if you can live within it's limitations.

Many, many people use spreadsheets as databases. Not elegant, but can work if needs are simple. Google Docs can be used this way to share data.

If you need the database for a specific purpose, consider looking for pre-built software built for that purpose. This can make life much easier. There are many inventory and cataloging packages which allow you to skip the design part, which is really quite hard, and go straight to building the database itself. Personally, I love "LibraryThing" for books (online). I've also used Librarian Pro. Not bad if you want to do manual entry. I don't. ;)

Cheers,
tod

Good point. Where I used to work some of our users had huge Excel
spreadsheets when they should really have been using Access.

Perhaps Les can give us some idea how "simple" he wants it to be?

That's it i will just keep Quite and observe the mails no more discussion
from my side. [?]

i live in UAE and it is very rare to see such a big group of people with
sound knowledge of Mac.

maybe 200 r 300 people with sound knowledge.

rest all are FCP editors or Adobe users.

rest is students using Logic or Avid.

I am a die hard fan of Apple , thats why i work for Apple Reseller.

Have a nice day.

WIFI Problem

Posted by: "Robert" cookrd1@discoveryowners.com   cookrd1

Tue Dec 20, 2011 7:07 am (PST)

MBP, late 08, Lion. Many users are reporting this problem, anyone have a solution?

Using the Hotspot feature on Verizon Android phone. Other computer/devices (non-Apple) I have with me have no problems connecting. However, the MBP loses connection quite often. Turning WIFI off and then back on (on the MBP, WIFI previously called Airport prior to Lion), will get it working again, albeit for a short period of time.

I tried almost every suggestion I found (change virtually every WIFI parameter, move WIFI to first connection choice, boot in 32 bit mode, etc) but no luck. I also have with me an external WIFI adapter (Rokland N3) and no luck there either.

Actually, I think the problem started in SL, since I booted into SL and still had the problem. I haven't tried my hackintosh on Leopard yet, but I prefer to use my Mercedes (MBP) instead of a Chevy (PC hackintosh).

Like I said, windows PC and other wifi devices have no problem staying connected, only my MBP....breaks my heart, this is the computer I much prefer to use. I don't think I have Leopard with me, if I do, I will try that, but what a hassle.

Since I still must use Win7 a lot, there were some features it has that I missed in OS X. Two nifty little programs to correct this - Noom and Dockview. Dockview has a free version with nagware. Neither are very expensive and I find them very helpful.

(BTW, the reverse is true also - there are Win programs to give OS X functionality missing in Windows. Isn't competition great?)

Sorry, that was the result of the spellchecker - the correct OS X app

That must be the answer - when installing from the Apple site, I was instructed to close Safari before installing. We have five accounts on this computer, so it's not always obvious.

The little window showing the progress with the update appeared and it got stuck at "Running Package Scripts". I've tried three times, and the same thing happens every time. One of the updates was iTunes, which I've installed separately. It's the update to Safari that causes the problem. Any ideas what to do - or should I just ignore it and wait for the next update? This is an Intel Core 1 Duo iMac with OS X 7.2.

I'm very surprised that Software Update didn't want to restart the machine prior to installing. I thought that was pretty much SOP with most system stuff. Really never paid attention all that much but when I did, that's how SU handled it. In that case, Safari would have been closed.

In my case, Harry, using system update, it did restart the system, but I still had the problem until I closed Safari before starting the update the final time.

Strange behavior. I've never had that happen before. Usually after a restart, and before the install, everything is closed. I would assume that the restart process, the beginning of it, should terminate all user processes.

FYI, makeuseof.com has many good free guides. The password is makeuseof if you don't want to create a free account. Below is a link to using Windows and Android with OSX:

Check out their other guides too. I have no affiliation with them, but I downloaded a ton of their stuff!
