But WorldCat depends on each library to update and delete its holdings--this is pretty much automatic as part of the cataloging process for most libraries, but many (like us) don't carefully delete holdings from WorldCat as we discard titles--so you really always have to check the online catalogs of individual libraries.

We at Burbank normally buy 3-5 copies of hot titles (serving a city of 100,000). Books like Harry Potter or the Twilight series are exceptional, and even there we rely on gift copies to keep up our supply as worn-out copies are discarded. I doubt anybody will (or even could) give us their old unused ebooks. I have a couple dozen Kindle books on my iPhone that I'll never look at again.

Yeah, with budgets getting smaller, the first thing I would drop is WorldCat.
My local library uses a co-op with several counties and so there are about 20 branches that are available on one library membership. Then being able to check out the book and download it from home is great.
Still there are only a small finite number of each title available.
I think the publishers saying when a copy is "worn out" on a digital copy is baloney. But, Misha, you indicate that they can wear out. Would you explain how?

No, you have to check into your library's web site and see what they have and in what format. You use Overdrive to check it out.

Alice, I go to the library overdrive site and look over all the ebooks and choose the ones I want. I can have them for 21 days and can download to the kindle app or ePub with Bluefire. I just happen to prefer the kindle app. Also the library can only lend out each copy to one person at a time so there may be wait lists. Overall, it is quite easy.
I also buy books from iBooks or amazon, depending On who has the boom I want at the best price.
Amazon has a lot more deals than iBooks.

> I'm not sure I understand. Only one person can check out an ebook at a time? Why is that? I would think ebooks, when downloaded, are copies of the book, not the original file. Therefore, more than one person could download the book at the same time.
You're thinking of electronics--publishers are thinking of ownership. You can "lend" a Kindle copy to a friend, too, but only one device can read it at a time.
If ebooks could be copied/distributed infinitely, nobody would make any money. Authors and publishers have to eat too, and there are few millionaires among them. Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Nora Roberts are the exceptions--most authors (like most musicians) have to take a day job and do what they love in their "spare time."
Most movies lose money too, despite the billionaire Hollywood image. When I worked at AFI library, I learned the ugly statistics: each year, about 45,000 screenplays are registered with the Writers' Guild; about 450 movies get made; about 45 make a profit; 4 or 5 are truly memorable, and (maybe not the same 4 or 5) win all the awards and/or make a lot of money. It's a lottery, but it takes a lot more work and expense than just buying a lottery ticket.
The book market is almost as bad--more get published, but fewer are big blockbusters. Harry Potter is the once-in-a-lifetime exception, not the rule. And a few dozen authors, out of thousands of hopefuls, enjoy sustained careers.
So ebooks, mostly barely profitable, are as carefully guarded from piracy as software, music and movie files. Multiple downloads are lost income, and most publishers and authors are barely making it (and let's admit it, the vast majority of the authors who put their stuff on the net for free really aren't worth reading). So, if you want the good books to keep coming, you have to give the good authors something in return. And that means selling one copy at a time.

I'm betting that it isn't technical issues that keep libraries from allowing more than one person to use an ebook at a time but contractual issues with publishers. That way large libraries will have to buy multiple copies of popular ebooks to satisfy their clients' demands. Ditto for them insisting the ebook is "worn out" after 25 borrowers take it out. That way they can make even more money than they do with print books.
I live in a small town and use the library all the time. Many of the books have been lent more than 25 times and are still in useable shape. So setting a book's lifetime at 25 lends is pure baloney. Other library books have been taken out only a few times. But they sure didn't pay less for them because they weren't particularly popular. You'd think the profit would even out for the publishers (who I am guessing hate the whole idea of public libraries and wish they would disappear.} Not surprisingly our library can't afford ebooks.
I am all for authors and publishers being paid. But I think they'd make a lot more money if ebook prices reflected their actual cost rather than mimicing print book prices. I know I'd buy more if they were less expensive. Increase in volume of sales would more than make up the ebook/print price difference. But I'm not holding my breath for it to happen.

Opps, spoke to soon.
I see my mistake, the Bluefire home page took me to Bluefire Mikie and the link I chose took me to the iTunes page for that. I should have been looking at Bluefire Reader.
That is why I dislike abbreviations and personal shorthand.
Thanks for introducing me to another app.

Carol, you have me confused.
I understand that Kindles can play Audible enchanced format (audiobooks) and some can do text to speech, as well as ebook format (text).
But ePub is a text format and Bluefire is a stereo (audio) recorder application. I see nothing in the description of the application that say it can convert text to speech, or that it can use Audible enchanced format.
Could you clear that up for me?

So I downloaded an audiobook from my library using the Overdrive program on my laptop (Win7). I transferred it to my iPhone 4S using the transfer button on the Overdrive app. Now where do I find it on my phone? It's not showing up in the Overdrive app on my phone, nor is it showing up anywhere within the iPod portion of the phone (podcasts, audiobooks, etc.).
I've searched through the help files but haven't seen anything that addresses where the transferred files can be found.

Library eBooks
Posted by: "Teaberry" teaberry@rocketmail.com momcatj

It's not the library: it's the eBook provider. They decree that if the library has purchased one copy of an eBook, then only one copy can circulate at a time. The book must be "returned" before anyone else can check it out. Depending on the software, the files are either deleted or simply made inaccessible. The books also return automatically, so if you have a one week loan period and you wait eight days, the book won't be available unless you download it again.
Some publishers are declining to sell eBooks to libraries at all; another wants to limit the number of circulations to something like 26. After the book is downloaded 26 times, the library must repurchase the title to have it available.
This is a hotly contested topic right now and I don't know how it will shake out. The publishers are having to adapt to this new model as well. Their stance is much the same as it used to be with hard copy books: why sell one copy to a library when they could make more by selling a copy to each reader? The old answer to that came in the fact that libraries introduce readers to new authors and build a demand for that author. James Patterson doesn't necessary need libraries to buy his book but Richard Roe, fledgling author with three titles to his credit amid a sea of authors, needs libraries to have his books in stock and to give people a chance to sample his work. Amazon is testing these waters by providing some free sample chapters to download or occasionally free or 99 cent books. Again, the catch is that there are thousands of authors out there, many now eschewing traditional publishers to self publish. At this point, we don't know how it's
going to be resolved.
Devices are another factor. Overdrive is the most used software for library eBooks. Until recently, they didn't carry Kindle compatible books but a deal was finally struck with Amazon to do so. See above: why should amazon allow free downloads on their subsidized devices instead of making the owner pay for books through Amazon? There are still some unsupported devices, but most of the biggies (iPad, iPhone, iPod, Nook, Sony eReader, etc.) are.
I'm rather a dinosaur in that I prefer paper books. I look at a screen a good portion of my day at work, and when it's time to read for pleasure, I prefer paper.

My 3GS has slowed quite noticeably. Pages or apps come up slowly, taking sometimes up to 5 seconds (an eternity in Computerland!) before the page becomes active.

I love it when people mess up the quotation.
Morgan is afraid to upgrade his iPhone 4.
I, the other Brent, upgraded my 3GS without a hitch. It runs pretty fast, most of the time. But now that you mention it, it does seem to hang a bit at times.
I had attributed it to a 2.5 year old phone, with about 150 apps on it. Like battery usage, I have turned off many of the apps and notifications to conserve resources, like CPU cycles, and I try to keep about 20% free space so it can work. So your mileage may vary.
And some of it may be the lag of cellular data transfer.
Certain apps have always been dogs, like bring up an article in NYTimes, but it does seem slower than before.
I guess it might be time to remove some of the 80% of apps that I almost never use, and lean it out to mostly just the 20% I use weekly, or need for emergency. I don't travel, or need some of the apps for work, like I used to. Then I could tell if were the load or the new iOS.
BTW, one of the biggest battery depleters is looking for a 3G signal. Since I spend most of the day in a commercial building with a metal roof, I have poor 3G signal coverage, and even occasional Edge signal coverage for most of the day. And for 99% of the time Edge is more than satisfactory for my needs, so I have 3G turned off, unless I have a specific need for it.
I still think Morgan should upgrade. Especially since it is just FUD that is keeping him from upgrading and not a specific definable issue he is worried about. Every new OS and hardware has some Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt as to if they will have issues. And most do have minor issues that are quickly resolved, but that get way to much discussion. Generally because people haven't done their homework, and that includes expectations of capabilities that were never there or even hinted at.
Apologies for the length.
