Blaine,

Sounds like a QR code, check the app store there are a number of free QR code readers. I use Ebay RedLaser mostly.

The "square" code that I think you are asking about is called QR Code.

QR Code means a Quick Response Code. It's a form sometimes called a "matrix" bar code.

Download a QR reader. I have one called QR Reader. Free.

It works with the iPhone camera and directs you via Internet to more info.

QT Codes now also seen on computer, entertainment, gadget, and appliance boxes at retail stores.

I use QR Reader at Micro Center and Best Buy and other retail stores which hire uninformed, incompetent, barely literate, not enough, and temporary employees.

What if one of us sent private email to a moderator with a suggestion

Thanks for reminding me of that. That is one BIG "ouch." I would HOPE that there's not some intrinsic limitation in the file system that says that files originally written to an HFS device by being copied from another device MUST be immediately deleted (or have the operating system's pointers to the immediately deleted, which is the same thing for probably > 99% of users). This is certainly worth a "bug report" to Apple, I would think, given that it's reproducible and "not good behavior."

My suggestion that it might be related to the files originating from a foreign file system is misleading and I'm sorry I made it, although I think it's still pertinent to point out that the Mac OS is a "guest" to those cards, and we should remember that trying to sue them for some "Mac" purpose might make them non-readable to their usual host devices.

I've had trouble too. I ran Handbrake on one of my DVDs to put it in iTunes on my computer. The first couple of tries it put the file in "volumes/thenameofthemovie" I have NO idea where volumes is and when I search Mac doesn't know either. I managed to change the movie to show on my desktop and was able to watch last night on my computer but I still have this volumes lurking somewhere. I don't seem to be able to find the path that used to show up for me.

Handbrake comes defaulting to the desktop as the path for the converted file.

Was this not so the first time you ran it?

Yes, it was true. It's always put the file on my desktop. That is one reason why it was so confusing. I never changed that location but Handbreak sure it. I was able to set it back but now I'm curious about the place it mention. You can bet from now on I am going to pay closer attention to make sure it's desktop.

You can always try uninstalling Handbrake, and then reinstalling, if you're having a problem getting the path to 'stick'.

Make sure you delete any preference flies (.plist), and application support files along with the app if you do this.

Howdy.

I also think the Lion Address Book is awkward, difficult to use,
difficult to figure out, and a major step backwards. It always takes
me longer now in Lion to figure out how to use it.

I've already given Apple some negative feedback on Lion Address Book.

They're probably tired of hearing from me.

Here's the feedback URL for Apple products.

Give 'em a piece of your mind on something that is less functional and
a step backwards.

That depends on the format (codec). 500 GB could be:-

35 days using AIFF (10 MB/min)
59 days using ALAC (6 MB/min)
178 days using AAC or MP3 256k (2 MB/min)
356 days using AAC or MP3 128k (1 MB/min)

Speaking of formats, I keep a huge library of FLAC files. I prefer to listen to these as I do detect a noticeable difference, when done right.

Of course, iTunes does not play these, but there are a couple of great open source apps to do just that, as well as maintain a nicely organized library.

A noticeable difference from what? ALAC? There should be no difference as
they are both lossless.

Thanks for the response, James. You're close, but didn't quite nail my situation. I correspond with several couples who do, in fact, have separate e-mail addresses (I agree: why would you not?!). If you've used Outlook you'll probably recall that Outlook let's you pick display names for each e-mail addy.

So here's what I've been doing for many years (not to suggest there might not be a better way): I'll create a Contact in Outlook for John and Mary Smith. Comes in handy when time to do a mail merge for address labels for Christmas cards, for example.

John and Mary each have their own e-mail addy, so I tell Outlook to display John's as "John Smith <john's e-mail addy>" and Mary's as "Mary Smith <mary's e-mail addy>". Each name/addy combo lists separately when selecting e-mail recipients.

I was hoping to be able to do something similar with Mac's Address Book, but so far my only solution (not really a solution; more a work-around) is to have three separate Address Book entries for this couple: One for him, one for her and one for them.

Hope I'm explaining this clearly enough.

Best,

Jim

I think what you're asking it the ability to pick the displayed name when you're composing a message, let's say to <friends@isp.com>. Sometimes your intended target might be the husband, sometimes the wife, sometimes both.

They'll all use the email address, of course. I actually don't understand why couples sometimes use a shared address for individual correspondence, though of course it's done quite often.

Thanks again John. I've cleared the entire "previous recipients" list, but that has not helped.

So, for example, in Entourage 2008 the "previous correspondents (can't remember if that's exactly what Entourage called it)" was not really editable at all, and if it became too obtrusive you just had to delete the whole thing. And, I think it was entirely based on people who'd sent YOU mail, not people to whom you'd sent messages. In any event, if you've gotten a message FROM "John and Mary Smith" and the underlying email address is <jsmith@isp.com>, you have that email address in your Entourage address book (perhaps in separate records for John Smith and for Mary Smith), and you begin composing a message to John Smith, it will ALWAYS be trumped by what's in the recent correspondents list (I'm hoping Diane Ross is here and can confirm or refute this).

Re: no time for TimeDisc ???

I recently reconnected with my TimeDisc app, which I know Randy Singer likes. I noticed a strange thing with respect to it: Even though the app exists in my Applications folder, it does not register elsewhere.

Unlike every other app (such as Clock+Menu, which sits in Dock), TimeDisc does not show in the top-left corner of the menubar when clicked. TimeDisc does not register within the Force Quit Applications window, unlike all other open applications.

A TimeDisc icon, however, does materialize in the top right of the menubar.

I had wanted to to set up Spaces so that TimeDisc would show everywhere, however there is no way to add it to the Spaces group because my OS does not see it. As a result, I am forced to (if I want to do so) drag the TimeDisc icon with me to every other space.

Actually, TimeDisc can not be dragged to other spaces, it can only be opened in the space of intended use. Why is TimeDisc so semireal to my 10.6.8 Snow Leopard?

Thanx. Oneal
