James,
All the tips did fail and I used the video you suggested as a guide.
Cracking open the glued case isn't easy but a little gentle persuasion
with a screwdriver and a Stanley knife succeeded in the end.
As I suspected the Y-plane pinions were wrapped solidly with very fine
cat hair - the stuff from the layer nearest the cat which is fine
enough to float in air currents.
I've uploaded a photo of one of the offending pinions at
http://groups.yahoo.com/ group/macsupport central/photos/ album/705212464/ pic/402349270/ view
(http://yhoo.it/vsm7yq if the link wraps). The lines on the paper
background are at 5 mm spacing, so you can see that the part is quite
small.
I re-glued the bezel to the mouse body with a couple of blobs of hot
glue as I'm bound to have to repeat the exercise.
The video you recommended is also on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Jet7488UoSE
The mouse now works well, so thank you.
regards,
Ian

Well Dan, youre a better man than I. Where on that link is the app icon that can give the URL for Address Book feedback? I guess Apple also forgot that Mail is an OS X app. Oneal

Thanks Brent, I was beginning to fear that was the answer: That Mac Mail does not have that ability as does Outlook. OK, I can make do with three separate entries for one couple if I have to. And I have already created those in most cases.
But my autocomplete issue goes beyond that. Even though I have a separate entry for John, Mary, and John and Mary, when I type "john" or even "john smi" into the "To" field only "John and Mary Smith" pops up, not "John Smith." This after clearing out the previous recipients list, restarting a few times, and even upgrading to Lion.
Best,
Jim

Well, this is mystifying me so I set up 3 cards in Address Book, one for
John & Mary Smith, one for John Smith, and one for Mary Smith, all with
fictitious email addresses, of course.
In Mail > New Message > To, if I type "smith" I get all 3, plus my "real"
Smiths. If I type "john sm", I get the addresses for John Smith *and* John
& Mary Smith. If I type "mary sm", I get only one address (for Mary).
Could you show us how you entered the names in Address Book? Could there be
a typo somewhere?

Otto,
I tried setting up a new account from scratch and that worked for me also.
There must be something about the way I set these up in the first place. First of all, I imported my Address Book from Outlook (using MessageSave). Next, when I discovered I could not specify individual display names as one can in Outlook, I created separate entries for each of the affected couples. I did that by copying and pasting the entry for them both, then editing the name to delete one. In all cases, that did not produce the desired result. Deleting John Smith's entry and creating a new one from scratch did.
Seems like a bit of a pain, but it works and won't take me too long to repeat with all similar couples.
Thanks again.
Jim

You can have any number of email addresses in a single card, but I can't
see a way of giving them separate display names: they all have the name on
the card. You can edit this but it's a bit messy, so I suppose it's not
really what you want?

Thanx for the tip, Arjun, however I cant seem to get VLC to play my video. Ive selected Enable Video and clicking the start button does indeed start something, however the disc player (not my app) stops after a short period. The video counter does not register.
I have been able to use VLC in the past to produce frame snaps of videos that I created with my camera. This is my first attempt at playing a videodisc using VLC. Perhaps some setting is missing.

I'm assuming you use the 'open disc' menu selection when trying to play?

I mean in the playlist window of VLC,not iTunes.
The playlist window in VLC is not open by default, you have to select it either from the 'Window' menu selection, or the icon in the VLC toolbar.

I oopsed that one, Harry. I clicked VLC > File > Save Playlist which opened blank in iTunes.
Per your correction, I found the regular playlist, which shows my One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest that I got in Hungary. Theres a yellow triangle in the far-left column probably meaning a nogo.
I ejected the disc and erased the video from the playlist. Reloading the disc (which is recognized by Finder) I dragged the video to VLCs playlist, which accepted the video, again with a yellow nogo icon beside it. Again it does not play.
Whats next? Oneal

I had never heard that VLC was region neutral That's a hardware deal, mostly.
Long shot, and a pain, can you transcode the disc using Handbrake? Then, the resultant file should be viewable with any media player.

This follows the 'DVD Player scam/sham' thread.
Thanx Harry. This ends here, unless someone with Handbrake experience can guide me through the process of converting my video so that VLC or DVD Player can play it.
Im not willing to spend any time learning to work the app. Oneal

Instead, I chose "Other" and from the pop-up application window,
selected VLC player.
Locked in just fine.
Thanks for the pointer.
All I have to do now is, check it out the next time I have a video DVD. <g>
I just did, and it wouldn't play. I inserted a copy of the 2009 Rose
Bowl game, and altho' a number of windows opened, none of them played
the game.
No idea what's going on. Yet.

Re: Finder spelling

I use Spotlight Comments when I activate Get Information (command-I) where I often enter foreign terms/words, which often results in red underlines indicative of spelling mistakes.
I find it annoying to have to use Learn Spelling to rid myself of those underlines. Is there any way to deactivate the Spelling feature for Spotlight, just as I (a rather good speller) have deactivated 'Check spelling' in Apple Mail? Thanx.
Spellchecking seems to be application-specific, at least with respect to some apps. 'Check spelling' was unhooked for Apple Mail because the feature was always showing red when I wrote Hungarian emails, 'egy zavaró dolog' [an annoying thing]. Oneal

Re: laptop-screen ontime

What is the downside, if any, of leaving ones laptop on all the time? I use the Caffeine app to never allow my laptop to go into sleep mode. As a consequence, most nights my laptop shines bright, quite often because Ive left the Mail app on. The background is constant.
My understanding is that screensavers are redundant with new screen technology, which means (theoretically) there will be no sort of screen burnout.
That said, I have noticed that when my laptop is off, or at least not nothing showing on the screen, there is a dark irregular boxy shape stretching across the screen laterally. Its not very wide. I know that camera LCD screens can be affected by objects placed against them. In fact LCDs can be caused to malfunction if they receive bump traumas, as has happened to me a couple of times, sad to say.
Ive stored things within my laptop, however they have been (to my knowledge) only flat items, such as notebooks or sheets of paper, certainly nothing that could have produced the image I see when the screen is off.
The screen seems okay, however, when it is on. Thanx. Oneal
