Rumor: Apple Preparing $299 iPad With A6 Processor

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 04:20 PM PST

Taiwanese publication Digitimes is reporting again today that Apple is planning two iPad models, with the low-end version starting at only $299. Both iPads will reportedly boast the new A6 processor and will be differentiated by their screen resolutions.

Sources from Apple’s supply chain have claimed that there will be two versions of the new iPad, one targeting the high-end segment and the other the mid-range. Digitimes Research believe the two new iPad models will both be equipped the A6 processor with high-end model coming with a high resolution panel (2048×1536) and the mid-tier model featuring the same grade of panel as iPad 2 (1024×768).

In my opinion, it makes more sense for Apple to drop the price of the current iPad 2 to $299 and introduce the next-generation model at $499. The idea of Apple releasing two new iPads at once seems a little ridiculous.

TinyUmbrella has been updated with support for saving SHSH blobs on the second build of iOS 5.0.1 that Apple released weeks ago for the iPhone 4S. As you cautioned earlier today, it’s important to update to the latest iOS firmware and save your SHSH blobs for the untethered jailbreak.

Will Apple Kill App Store Apps by Stealing Their Ideas?

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 02:44 PM PST

Steve Jobs famously said that great artists steal, and the company has often taken that mantra to the extreme over the years. Some would say that much of Apple’s current software bears more than a passing resemblance to some of its competitors’ products.

Take iOS 5′s Notification Center, for example. You’d need to be blind to say that it does not look eerily similar to the same notification system that Android has packed since day one. Some would argue that there are only so many ways you can handle something like a pull-down notification window. Some would call it stealing.

Apple has even taken some cues from its own App Store. Mobile Safari now sports a “Reading List” feature that offers a similar service to that of Instapaper, the famous web app that also has a popular iOS app in the App Store. Instapaper’s developer, Marco Arment, doesn’t seem too concerned, but others were not so happy…(...)

Potential Jailbreakers Should Update to iOS 5.0.1 Before It’s Too Late!

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 12:34 PM PST

It’s a busy and exciting time for the jailbreak community. In the last couple of weeks we’ve seen the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak for A4-based devices go live in the form of RedSn0w, PwnageTool, and The Chronic Dev Team’s Corona tool. Moments ago we announced that the security expert known as pod2g expects to drop the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users next week.

Now is the time to update to Apple’s latest firmware, iOS 5.0.1. Even if you rely on an UltraSn0w unlock, you should update as soon as possible before it’s too late to get the untethered jailbreak on 5.0.1.(...)

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak to Be Released Next Week

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:20 AM PST

Great news for potential iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreakers. Infamous hacker pod2g confirmed a few minutes ago that significant progress has been made on the jailbreak, and we should except it in a week if all goes well.

As you already are aware of, the untethered jailbreak for A4 devices, iPod touch, iPhone 4, etc. was released last week to much fanfare.

Now the only thing left to do is release an A5 (iPad 2, and iPhone 4S) jailbreak for the full enchilada…(...)

How to Get Unlimited Data On Your Verizon iPhone

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:45 AM PST

Verizon discontinued its unlimited data plan last July, thereby joining the ranks of AT&T with tiered data offerings for smartphone users. Thankfully, a nifty trick has surfaced for getting unlimited data on Verizon, despite the CDMA carrier technically not offering its all-you-can-eat plan anymore.

While we can’t verify the legitimacy of this method, many Verizon customers have reported that performing this workaround has indeed unlocked unlimited data…(...)

Create and Edit Microsoft Office Cloud Docs on Your iPad with CloudOn

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:30 AM PST

If you can’t wait for the rumored official iPad version of Microsoft’s popular Office suite, then you may be in luck. CloudOn’s app description suggests that the free iPad app will allow users to create and edit Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents on the device via a cloud-based interface and Dropbox integration.

For a free app, being able to create and edit Microsoft Office documents on an iPad sounds pretty useful, assuming you’re based in the United States. The app is only available in the US App Store, presumably while CloudOn monitors its cloud systems.(...)

Apple’s Upcoming New York Event to Focus on Education and Textbooks

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:14 AM PST

Following yesterday’s report that Apple is planning a relatively low-key media event in New York this month, more sources have weighed in on what the company has planned for its upcoming announcement.

Last night TechCrunch said that Apple’s event will focus on publishing and iBooks. Four more sources have corroborated that report this morning, and it looks like Apple is about to enter the textbook space.(...)
