I just did a plain cmd-p, and it gave me the envelope print.
Amazing.
Where are the options aside from the standard print options selection?

Yes, command-p or File > Print. Do you not get a window with a preview on
the left, then on the right printer details, Style, Paper Size, Attributes,
etc? Style is a drop-down with options
Mailing Labels
Envelopes
Lists
Pocket Address Book
Of course, this might've changed since my version (10.5.8).

That's better than what I get. I have to come within the @ sign before anything pops up. It's like my fast fill is weak. Not only that but sometimes my keyboard doest respond to my taps right away. I can type an entire sentence and it won't show for several seconds after I stop typing. The keys don't click when I am doing this and the keys don't darken. It works but sometimes, not all the time, the response is v e r y slow.

I have more than three-thousand cards in my Address Book and a fair bit of experience with its goingson. BTW, clearing names from the Previous Recipients list will do nothing for your problem, as you have already found out.
Clearing the PR list may or may not prevent erroneously calling up incorrect email addies in some cases, however not all the time. If there is an email address that you can't use or you don't want to use and have removed from the PR list, that addy may still get called up if you have saved an email with that address. You would have to get rid of all saved emails that contain that 'tainted' email address. That has been my experience.
There are two ways that I create email-address cards in Address Book: Click the + button at the bottom of AB's Name column. Use an incoming email's address.
For the latter, go to the To field of an incoming (to Mail) email and hover the cursor over the name in the field. The actual addy will materialize as a yellow bar.
Now, instead of hovering, click the sender's name. A drop-down window will appear. Choose Add to Address Book, which does just that, however you may not find the newly imported addy in AB. Again click the same name and then select Open in Address Book.
Why have I laboriously detailed something that you probably already know, Jim? Because my experience is such that these type of Address Book entries always get recognized, while the former (above) type of entries sometimes are not recognized by Mail.
I have, on more than one occasion, erased plus-button entries that did not work, replacing them with the second method that I just detailed.
You may have to resort to some trickery to dupe a recalcitrant Mail into recognizing an addy. ONE: If you have an email from the person in question, download that addy, which will automatically create a new card, even if one with the same name exists. Find that card (per the above-described method) and trash the original card. TWO: Open a blank email. Type the recipient's addy in the standard way: <jsmeth@gomail.com >. Send it. From the saved email, go to the To field and (again per the above) select Add to Address Book, then Open in Address Book. I've never done this, thus can not swear to its efficacy, however I'm thinking that it should work given that it's similar to the above that always works for me.
If I am correct, you should now have an email addy that Autofill will automatically fill in To.
Forgive the prolixity. Hope it works. Oneal

I am not sure about this. I downloaded Handbrake on Windows in 2007 for the first time, and I don't remember using VLC at all to decrypt DVDs at that time. I never downloaded VLC on Windows - I used Cole2K Media Codecs on Windows which worked just fine. I was ignorant back then I guess.

What's amazing to me as far as Handbrake via Windows goes, I use the iMac with Bootcamp and Win 7, and Handbrake has a hard time decoding. It's not only this Win machine, but my girlfriends as well. Same hardware, same codecs, it takes forever to thrash and get the dvd 'ingested' before it decodes. I mean a lot longer. I'm afraid my optical drive would be damaged. But, in OS X, it's pretty smooth.
Says something about the Win drivers and codecs.

I agree with you. Back in 2007, I was using a Pentium D processor with 2 Gigs of Ram on Vista and Handbrake. It would take quite a while to rip a DVD. And the whole cabinet would be screaming hot with two extra fans after the job was done. But I am glad I did them, coz I still use those movies in my iTunes and Apple TV at the same FPS and resolution.
On the Mac, I do find it smoother. I also remember there used to be a slider that allowed you to commit more of the CPU to the ripping task, and if you moved it up to 100%, your windows would be "Cryin' out loud"
But on the Macs as well, there is this great big difference in speed after I moved from Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro Late 2008 Edition to the Late 2011 Core i7 machine.
Although, I find the Core i7 machine much slower when it comes to regular tasks like opening Pages, Keynote etc., and that's probably because the regular office apps do not use the processing power of all the CPU cores, but Handbrake 64-bit takes a fraction of the time it took to convert videos on this new machine, and its not as dramatic either.

I am using Handbrake with Lion. Half the time it works as described using the default setting but not on all. I've had it only convert the first few sections. I have had to set it to Chapter 2 to get the entire movie but that sometimes excludes the opening credits. It must have something to do wit the protection on the disk. For the life of me I can't figure out why the put those on a DVD. An illegal organization is not going to run off multiple copies to bootleg one at a time in iTunes. I like putting my DVDS in my iTunes.

Terry,
Your problem with Handbrake sounds fixed. But just to answer your second sentence, Volumes is hidden generally. It's easy to see it, though.
In the Finder. under the "Go" menu, choose "Go to folder..."
Type: /Volumes
Click the Go button.
And there it is.

Michel, happy new year! Thanks (to you, the other moderators, and the
membership) for maintaining this group. It's been a life-line to me on a
number of occasions. I've learned a lot, enjoyed my Mac much more, and found
new hobbies flourishing as a result of my computer. Like lots of novices, I
sometimes have "blocks" and "fears" which prevent my trying new things. But
the knowledgeable, helpful individuals on this list often dispel these
feelings. I've owned Macs since 1988 I should know more but I don't.
You briefly mentioned "other lists". No where have I been treated more
courteously and kindly than here. I have a disease which impacts my
cognitive abilities quite severely. Yet here where knowledge and expertise
reigns I am treated very kindly and patiently. That says a lot of the
calibre of people who have invested themselves here.
So HNY and a big thanks to my Mac cyber friends.
friendly hugs,

Howdy.
It's the generic feedback page. You could click the OS X link.
or try,

I was among the first few people in India to download OS X Lion and install it. The first thing I noticed about Lion is the eerie feeling you get that compares it iOS. A few of the features:
Natural Scroll
Launch Pad
Mail App
iCal
Address Book
These apps were completely redesigned with the release of Lion, and needless to mention, with the launch of new Safari on iOS 5, we're just getting closer to mobile computing. I think it's apple's attempt to make people more mobile with computing, and if you're just an end user who makes a few documents, writes email, shares photographs etc., you can pretty much work with an iPad or the Macbook Air. That's what OS X Lion made me feel. The apps are so close.
Not to mention, we already had the App Store, FaceTime and a lot of apps on the App Store like Twitter, Mashable App, Whistle, the new Skype that are so alike.
iMovie, iPhoto and other iLife applications are also closely related to their iOS cousins.
And this morning, my facebook status talked about different IE versions not being compatible with each other. And if you regard versions of a software as different stages in the life of a human being, IE just doesn't have any brothers, sisters or cousins. Or a better half that has any life of its own. Hehe.

Repairing permissions
Posted by: "Deborah Shanahan" debbys@verizon.net debbyshanahan

My iMac (OS X 10.6.8) was running slowly, so I ran MacJanitor and
then repaired permissions 3 times.
The first time said it would take 4 minutes, the second time 6
minutes and the third was 7 minutes. I didn't actually time anything,
because I went off to do other things. After the third repair, I
decided to read the history. Everything had been repaired except for
the item that caused the following message:
**** Warning: SUID file
"System/Library/CoreServices/ RemoteManagement /ARDAgent. app/Contents/ MacOS/ARDAgent"
has been modified and will not be repaired."
What does that mean? And why does permission repair always find
things to repair, even right after permissions were repaired?

odd item in "shared"

Gurus,
Today I was downloading updates to M$oft Office 2008 for mac. At one point
I was asked to allow or deny internet access for something and denied it.
Now I see this in finder under shared. The update was successful.
*brn001ba944126b *with a p.c. icon next to it.
When I highlight it, in the window to the left it says "connection failed"
How can i remove this?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
the device you are seeing is a Brother printer connected to your network. The hex number behind brn is your printer's MAC Address (00:1b:a9 = Brother Industries, Ltd.).
Maybe the printer manual offers you a way to disable this network share without loosing the ability to print over the network.

Thanks so much. I did get rid of it and can still print. How i did it:
Finder --->Preferences---> I unchecked all 3 items under "shared".
That said, when I was having printer issues the printer was temporarily set up using bonjour, which it no longer is...
Thanks again.

Yes, it was stated by me that there was a maximum (for a reason I still can not fathom) of FIVE region switches allowed by DVD Player.
A subsequent poster posited that using VLC might obviate the DVD Player restriction. I have not been able to, however, get my Euroborn video to play here.
A second subsequent poster (Harry F) suggested Handbrake, however I am loath to delve into its intricacies just to (presumably) convert a video that I may want to watch. Oneal

Any Similar Mac Support Mailing Lists?

Hello Everyone,
Love this Group... So entertaining and informative.
Just wondering if there are any other good Mac Support type Mailing Lists on Yahoo or Google Groups, similar to MacSupport Central. I had joined two similar Lists back in 2011, but had to unsubscribe because of email harvesting and porno mails.
