Sure, no problem Arjun.
Try that utility I mention to create the bootable disk. It works like a charm at least for me it did! I've write protected an SD card after I created it. I've used it several times with success.

Do you have any idea if a 4 Gigabyte SD Card would be sufficient. I have a spare one that shipped with my DSLR, and I don't use it since its just 4 Gigabytes and Class 4 speed. For photography I prefer using 16 Gigs or 32 Gigs at Class 10 speeds.

YES! I use a 4gb SD card without a problem. It leaves about 70mb free after the complete process. Wonderful stuff. I wound up picking up a 4gb SD card for around 12$ US. Cheap enough for me!

Not only do you get an install card, you get utilities as well, Disk Utility, etc. You can boot from it and try repairs first, before selecting to re-install the OS. You can use Disk Utility to erase the target disk first, to do a clean install. '
Quite nice!

That's what the thumb drive also does. I used a 4.3 Gigabyte partition on the Thumb Drive.
Another question, what about the iLife applications - will they redownload from the App Store (the ones that shipped with the Mac) or will they go to the Card as well? I recollect a recent post about Garageband and I am looking forward to using Garageband very soon, would like to have it included in the bundle (hopefully without downloading it - hehe)

It depends upon how you acquired iLife to start with. I had the DVD as it came with my newest iMac. Anything you purchased from the Mac app store will be redownloaded. You may have to initiate these downloads, but they will automatically be available.
You can only get so much in 4gb. To get the utilities and the operating system seems pretty adequate to me.
Not to say one couldn't use a larger SD card, run the boot disk maker utility, then copy the iLife installers over to the SD card afterward.

iLife was pre-installed on the Mac when I received it. There were no DVDs that shipped with these Macs

OT: Chrome Home Page Issue

Hi, this is not actually regarding an Apple product, but I am hopeful for
your assistance.
I would prefer using Chrome, but for some reason, a frustrating page keeps
popping up every time Chrome is opened on this iMac. The other iMac in our
home (6 months newer than this one) brings up our selected home page. The
same options are selected in the PREFS, yet this page is what keeps popping
up on the 27" iMac (10.6.8). Both iMacs are running the same OS and same
version of Chrome (16.0.912.75).
Surely I am just stupidly selecting something which is causing this specific
page to open.
I've taken a photo of the page and placed it in the files here:

Donna;
The page you are seeing in Chrome appears instead of the designated home page when Chrome has not been fully closed. I see the same behavior when I close the last tab in the browser (which makes the Chrome UI disappear), but the app itself is still running in the background. Reopening it shows either "Most Visited" or "Apps" depending the selection at the bottom of the screen.
If you close Chrome completely with Command-Q or by selecting Chrome > Quit Google Chrome from the menu, then reopen it, your homepage should open. You can also look in the Dock to determine if Chrome is still running by the presence of a small dot or "light" underneath the Chrome icon.

Re: OT: Chrome Home Page Issue

Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:47 am (PST)
Thanks, Tim. I did notice if the app is QUIT, then it starts up with the
desired page. What I don't understand is why isn't this same frustrating
page appearing on the other iMac? I don't want this page as it is limiting,
and I have to manually choose the home page.
Probably I'm missing the boat somewhere else, too, because I cannot find the
LOG OUT/ SIGN OUT option on Chrome unless I physically QUIT the app and
bring up the home page, or manually choose HOME.
Is there a way of having Chrome open to the desired page (my Home Page)
every time without having to quit it after each use?
I really do appreciate your assistance. It seems so stupid that I can't fix
this on the 27" iMac, and yet, the 21" iMac operates Chrome exactly has
desired.

I'm not sure why there is different behavior on the two different machines. When I started using Chrome recently, I thought it was odd behavior too, so I searched for a fix. There is no "fix" as this behavior is by design.
As for logging out of Chrome / Google:
Click the Wrench icon on the far top right of the browser window. In the preferences section on the left select "Personal Stuff" the in the Sign In section click the "Disconnect Your Google Account" button.
This can probably be better addressed on a Chrome Support page - maybe in Google Groups.

Randy, I don't care if you or anybody else does not want to use Disk Warrior, that is the choice that you and others made. I am just pointing out that Disk Warrior at times does find problems and corrects them and that Disk Utility does not and yes it does improve the performance of my iMac. I will also admit that some of the problems it found in a few cases was minor stuff that really did not matter one way or another. Frankly, if you and others do not find any value in using this program, so be it!

I do have library visable, but in the section called application help,
There is no Topaz folder, yet when I look at the short cut for it in the
Photoshop folder under applications, I can click on original and view it,
and in finder , it tells me that it is in library, application help, yet I
can not see it there.

Can you not follow the alias that you see. Right click on the icon you are seeing and select 'show original'. You should be able to follow in that manner until you come to the original folder.

Harry, I did that and then I can see the original that way, But how would I
delete it from there..and why doesn't it show in application support, even
though that is where it says it is.

There are AT LEAST 3 library folders on your Mac:
./Library
./System/Library
./Users/<username>/Library
No 3rd-party software should be screwing around with anything in ./System/Library but Adobe may be putting stuff in the top-level ./Library

What you are seeing are aliases. They can be noted by a curved arrow at the bottom of the icon. These can be followed until you get to the original. What you may be seeing in Application Support, if anything, is another alias. If it is not there, this might be the root of the problem.
Not knowing the program, I can't say.
Perhaps another user watching can help us out on this?

And later in the day yesterday I was able to delete 3 of the 4 from my iPad, leaving behind one card on all devices and only one entry on the Birthdays calendar. I have no idea why I couldn't do it earlier, but I'm a happy camper in the cloud now.

Guys,
Enough of this. Let's keep our discussions about the Mac. Brent made a clumsy move but he also apologized quickly for it and we shall move on.

> For the part of knowing the file size that is downloading - I am unable to determine that since the download is happening in the background in the install screens of OS X Lion. Thus, I am not sure about the download size. I called the ISP, and they said about 6 Gigabytes has been transfered in all (and since they sometimes double up the transfer to also including packet receipt messages, I am assuming about 3 Gigabytes must have been transfered).
>
> Unfortunately, when I left last night, the download was showing 44 hours remaining, but this morning, it says, the download has failed. There can be multiple reasons for this I believe, and I would probably like to blame a spike in the ISP bandwidth, but that means after two days of paying for the high bandwidth, I am back to square one.
>
> To bring forward Brent's idea on what I am starting out, then blowtrumpet.com is not a social networking site. We are working on solutions that aim at making the internet more useful for generations to come. We work as media consultants, on the idea that the printing press revolutionized media allowing one-to-many communication with high latency, the telephone brought one-to-one real time communication and the gramaphone, tape recorders brought latency to voice, audio and later video. But the internet was the first medium that became a motive carriage for many-to-many communication, where the audience has become participative and collaborates to generate meaningful content. This group is just a small example of such collaboration.
>
> I understand that Brent is more fortunate, not only in terms of money, but also opportunity to have used Apple computers since he was a child. Although, I used computers since an early age, they were hard to come by, and get support for. In earlier days, we would round up groups of friends in schools, neighborhoods etc. and troubleshoot our problems. Needless to mention, the strive continues even today, and I beg apologies again, if I have offended anyone in any manner. Most people have taken great pains in order to help sort out the problem. Among the last few posts, I have been told to take the laptop to a genius bar, but I am afraid, there are no "Apple Stores" in India, and the "Apple Authorised Service Centers" do not indulge in making copies of OS X Lion and passing them out. The only option they say they have available is that one should download it from the App Store. I'll add here, that most service centers do not have very high-bandwidth connections either, because bandwidth in India comes at a phenomenal cost, as compared to how people get it in the west. For home use, I pay in India Rs. 1700 (USD 35) and get 20 Gigabytes of "data transfer" per month at 1 mbps. For commercial usage, the price plans are about ten times as much. The highest speed available here through DSL connectivity is 16mbps and the cost factor scales upto Rs. 350,000 per month, if you want it for commercial use. Such speeds are available only in very specific areas of large metro cities of the country, and probably nothing out of the ordinary if you live in the United States. Add to it, the price of the dollar for us is much more, because we earn in Indian rupees, and you can get a bottle of coke out here for Rs. 10, which is about the fraction of what it costs in America. At that difference in purchasing power parity, the cost of our internet connections is much higher as compared to what people in the west pay for theirs.
>
> If younger people are not welcome on the group, to share their grievances or check if solutions are possible, then I would recommend this group be marked "Oldies only" because this is not the first time that Brent has attacked me in person. I am sure there will soon be days when the fortunate ones would like to blame China for a lot of their economic hassles, but then I must say, it is us who went helter-skelter in search for cost advantages when traditionally the motive of trade was to exchange goods in abundance, not economic cost advantage.
>
> I do not want to collect laurels and accolades and put them up for display. As a schoolboy, I was blessed to receive a national award in robotics and design, my programs were featured on television a few times - but those were days of VHS, not of youtube. I have spent the last ten years, developing solutions in different areas of engineering compliances, financial systems and consulting companies on executive pay. I know this is getting a little out of purview of the group, but there are people in the US who pay more for club memberships every year, than even fortunate people in other parts of the world earn in their entire lifetime. I often wondered that even after the companies published executive pay in so much detail, how could shareholders approve of such extravagant expenditure and not raise their voice in annual meetings. I guess, it was because of people who are greedy and fortunate and who believe that there should be no end to accumulation of wealth, and probably somewhere they believe technologically will be developed when they can take it all up with them when they eventually die.
>
> That said, I am not a Microsoft fan. In fact quite the opposite. Although, in our office, we are still using a few microsoft computers, but I surely hope as business grows, we would be able to sideline them out, and move to Macs completely. Or better yet, maybe consider open source alternatives - because I firmly believe that the best knowledge comes free. We can ask to be paid for our labour, not intellect. Intellect is but a gift of God, and we must use it to serve others.
>
> I don't have as much experience as many of you helpful people, I am sure. But I've seen scores of people use anti-ageing complexes, but never seen anyone get younger. I don't think it's worth to hide away from the fact that youth are owners of tomorrow, and we better get our act together now.

Second Request/Real Player Issues
Posted by: "Rick" ballyrick@yahoo.com ballyrick
Mon Jan 16, 2012 8:20 am (PST)
It seems "Real Player Downloader" pops up from time to time while I am about to view e-mail, as if it has a mind of its own.
I opened the "Real Player" Folder and found about 4,500 items, some of which are the photos I have in iPhoto or the music I store in iTunes.
But the majority of items/icons, are things I do not recognize and as such, I wonder if I should be deleting some or if in the entirety they are consuming too many GB`s, although it does not seem to be the case.
At the same time many of these may be valuable to the computer`s on going functions.
Examples are as follows:
"Portable Net," "Graphics," Quick Draw," "Word 2003 Format and Template,"
"HTML Document," "Tiff Image," "Apple Loop" and more.
Since I am not the original owner, could the above examples be things that were never purged before I took possession?
Would the group kindly advise me, if my examples are recognizable, if they are essential or if they have no value and if so, how do I delete them? I presume I can drag a few to trash every day for the rest of my life. ;o)
I have an older PowerBookG4 running 10.5.8 and for my limited use I am elated with this MAC.
