1. Yes.

2. Since you are not the original owner, the hard drive(s) *should* have been completely wiped clean and the MacOS reinstalled from scratch before you did anything with the computer.

How long have you had this machine?
How much have you done with it?
Were you provided DVDs with a MacOS installer?

I did a restart after installing Startupizer Lite & all of my startup items loaded & worked like a charm. Thanks so much!

Very wild guess. Maybe it is not written as a new preference until
you log out. Try not locking it and then restarting. If it works then
you can then lock it.

Tim, thank you for taking time to explain that. I misunderstood what
"disconnecting" meant when first looking thru that tool bar. And thanks for
letting me know that I didn't do something wrong LOL It's just the way it
is. How annoying though. Anyway, thanks again for your patience and
explanations.

Somehow, I have dashboard as a permanent screen on my MacBook Air running 10.7. It is gray dotted with the widgets I use on it. I can't get rid of it. I checked and it is still suppose to be a hot corner but that no longer works. It isn't even under force quit. I have other desktops so I am not encumbered by it being there but I like it to pop over a page I am doing word puzzles on so I can use the dictionary. (Some of us need to cheat.) Can anyone tell me how to get it back to normal?

Thanks

Topaz plug-ins would ordinarily be in the master Photoshop application
folder in plug-ins. In that folder are additional subfolders.
(Hard drive/Applications/Adobe Photoshop/Plug-ins.... then it could be
in "Filters" or "Effects" or another aptly titled folder.)
Not having Topaz plug-in myself, I cannot tell you which folder they
should be in. That way Photoshop can find them. If your finder also
shows you source files elsewhere, perhaps it's a 2nd copy or the
original (depends how Topaz was installed - downloaded as a DMG or ZIP
file, then copied upon installation?). Other Adobe things are indeed
stored in my User/Library/Application Support folder.

FWIW - some applications and plugins get installed for either ALL USERS
or Specific Users.
This will determine the location of the to be installed Application
Support files. If something is installed for ALL USERS then it would not
be copied to the User/Library/... folder as only the currently logged in
user can make use of it. Follow?

===

> I do have library visable, but in the section called application
help, There is no Topaz folder, yet when I look at the short cut for it
in the Photoshop folder under applications, I can click on original and
view it, and in finder , it tells me that it is in library, application
help, yet I can not see it there.
> Jeannie

There are AT LEAST 3 library folders on your Mac:

./Library
./System/Library
./Users/<username>
/Library

No 3rd-party software should be screwing around with anything in
./System/Library but Adobe may be putting stuff in the top-level ./Library

I shall look for the two others, But in library , application support, I do
see folders from other plugins and programs without the shortcut sign, but
nothing from Topaz. The only way I get to see the original that the
shortcut points to, is if I click on shoq original. It ells me that it is
in Application support, yet, if i look, it is not seen. This is a puzzle to
me. In windows there was a place you could say to show all hidden folders,
but I don't see anything like this on my mac.

Does it tell you the *complete path* to the "original" ?

For example, I have:
MacHD/Library/Application Support
MacHD/Users/jimdoc/Library/Application Support
MacHD/Users/Shared/Library/Application Support

Plus some others.

I have everything that pertains to a view with Finder set to enable. Makes things easier!

Sometimes, the path gets too long for the window to show the whole thing, so it collapses part of it. Simply running the mouse cursor along the bar exposes the collapsed parts.

SSD Advice

Late 2008 MBP - I am considering getting the OWC Data Doubler kit + 120 GB SSD. I want to boot Lion and Win7 quickly. Can I put Lion (and a few apps) and Parallels on the SSD and all the other Lion apps on the spinning HD?

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Bob;

That was a question I had to answer a few months ago.

On my 2010 15" MBP, I ended up taking out the Superdrive, adding an SSD with a data doubler, and running the VMs from the original drive instead of the SSD.The Superdrive was placed into an external case from OWC for occasional use.

End result with 240 GB SSD and the original 500 GB drive

1. SSD - OS X 10.7.2 + most of my original apps - 180 GB partition, now using ~60 GB with the remainder of the SSD given over to a Boot Camp Partition running Windows 7.

2. The original 500 GB drive is partitioned into a backup partition for Boot Camp, a backup partition for the OS X and the remainder as "storage" which includes all my VMs and some apps that I don't use too often. This was not strictly necessary with the 240GB drive, but it might be for the 120. YMMV.

3. I also have an external FireWire 800 drive that is used with SuperDuper! to back up the storage and bootable OS X partitions.

4. Both Windows 7 and OSX are extremely fast to boot (~20 seconds) and run. Apps open virtually instantaneously.

I have researched the data doubler and a 60 gb SSD for my 2010 iMac. It seems that this is possible. The data doubler makes it possible to span a hard drive and the SSD, which is what I was really looking for. This makes the split much easier.

Spanning makes the two devices look like one, on a hardware level.

Sounds like a nice upgrade! I have a data doubler with an OWC SSD in my 2009 MacBook Pro, as well as a Corsair SSD in my 8 core Mac Pro. Depending on what you're doing with Windows, you may have a hard time fitting Lion, Apps, Windows 7, and things inside Windows 7 on 120GB. OWC is a GREAT brand, and I always recommend them, but they can be a bit heavy on the price. I did a lot of research before buying my Corsair SSD, and I have actually gotten better performance at a lower price with it (about 30% less $ at the time). You can put other apps on your HDD like you said. You can also configure your iTunes and iPhoto libraries to be stored on your HDD.

Hope this helps you out!

Thanks for mentioning Corsair. Of the investigation I've done so far, they seem to make/market a very fast, reliable SSD at a very low price (comparatively). This is the drive I will be ordering next week, along with the data doubler. Amazon seems to have a low price for Corsair.

patches Snow Leopard systems to take advantage of it and get better
performance out of their SSDs.

I've heard really good things about:
OCZ Vertex 2
Check out this recommendation at anandtech.com:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3812/the-ssd-diaries-crucials-realssd-

in which it says: "I often get questions from Mac users asking what
the best SSD is for OS X. Since Apple still won't support TRIM you
need a very resilient drive under OS X. That path leads you to
SandForce. Pick up a Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2, G.Skill Phoenix or
whatever SF drive tickles your fancy if you want the best of the
best in your Mac." These models all have the SandForce controller.

I'm just going by the hundreds of people that I hear from because I
have an OS X Maintenance Web page that is very popular. By and large
I'm not hearing from folks telling me that their Macs have problems
that DU can't fix and that they find that they need DW.

Now, back in the days of OS 9, people often *did* need DW. I heard
about it on Mac discussion lists all the time. But these days I only
hear that they do extremely rarely.

But, once again, I'm not saying that no one ever needs DW. A very
few folks do need DW, and when they do it is a godsend. However, I
don't see any reason why anyone needs to go out and purchase it prior
to determining that they need it. The overwhelming majority of Mac
users will never need DW at all.

Note that DW is $100. These days for $100 you can purchase a huge
brand-new hard drive, which might be a better option than constantly
repairing a problematic hard drive with DW.

I am not disputing anything you say as you are certainly more of an authority on things Apple then I am. You are quite right, don't go out and buy this program unless it is the last resort. The only reason that I keep my copy up to date is that I am a registered user and it is a lot cheaper for me to keep it up to date then letting it go without updating it. The update process is free for the majority of updates. The only time that I had to pay anything (and that was at a discount) was when I went from a CD to DVD. I had to do this because the CD version will not work with Lion.

I quite agree with you in that the first line of attack would be using your OS X Maintenance Web page as doing those routines would no doubt take care of 98 percent of the problems. But if they didn't, then you still have the alternative.

I do enjoy reading your comments and recommendations, so keep up the good work. Ya, I am one of the old codgers living in retirement now.
