In my experience, if you are using DHCP, this will clear itself up automatically. In my LAN, it is most common when systems that have not been online in a while come on. A system holds it's last assigned address and when it comes on the LAN, it checks DHCP. In between coming on line and having a new address assigned by DHCP, you can have a conflict, which generates the message. It doesn't hurt anything. Just generates the message.

My advice is clear the message. If it does not come right back and you don't have an obvious problem, don't bother troubleshooting. The problem will be gone before you start looking.

The easy way to "prevent" this is to assign a range of IPs to the DHCP server static and assign the devices that live on the line static IPs no in that range. They typical way to do this is to "reserve" .01-.50 (or whatever) to static assignments, and set the DHCP range to .75-.100 (or something like that). There's no real rule except that it's generally easier if your fixed devices are first.

Yes, I've noticed this same error message a number of times, but I cannot for the life of me find this other "device" they mention.

I'd suggest downloading INET from the Mac Apple Store (there's actually a MORE full-featured version that runs under iOS). It will tell you every device on your network. When the conflict message pops up, scan your network.

What you will likely find is that there is no other device. It will be gone by the time you scan. That's not because it's some kind of ghost, but rather because it's being fixed faster than you can search for it.

Reverting back to static IP configuration is a pain, and there is no
need. Keep all your devices using DHCP as you now are, but most routers
these days provide the means to pin certain IP addresses to certain
MAC(*) addresses. Just pin a unique IP address to the MAC address of
each device you normally connect to your network.

Also, another possible reasons for these sorts of errors is your router
may not have enough address it is allowed to use for DHCP. Normally they
have a certain range, or number, which you can control. Check your settings.

I have the first generation of the iPad. I recently update the OS to 5. Since I did the upgrade when I open my video folders I no longer see the icons as photos of the videos. They are simply a white square with what appears to be a TV screen --but just the outline in gray. I sure hope this isn't the way it's suppose to be.
I am running Snow Leopard on my iMac.

I have an iPad1 that has been running iOS5 since it became available.

11 of the 13 videos on it -- both short pieces and full-length movies -- show the proper thumbnail image. 2 short pieces only show the blanks.

I don't know why.

Blaine, I would first check the obvious and go to Settings/WiFi and make sure it is turned on, and your preferred WiFi network is chosen. If that is set properly, check your signal strength as perhaps you are losing your WiFi signal if you are on the outer fringe of your coverage.

I answered my own question by calling technical support. When you iPad or iPhone is idling it is in 3G mode to save on battery life. Not sure how that works. When you turn on your gadget to download your emails or texts it switches over to WiFi and they are downloaded that way. I'm all for saving my battery but I don't understand why it prolongs your battery life idling in 3G mode. I don't care as long as the emails and texts are downloaded by WiFi.

Wifi is simply power intensive. Was not designed with low power devices in mind. Cellular can be too if your signal is weak. Searching for a signal is power intensive.

Although this is not a fix, but a rather impressive alternative to using iCal... it's call BusyCal and can be found here:

www.busymac.com

This program is a much more sophisticated Calendar program and I certainly enjoy using it over iCal.

Hi Tod
At any time over the last ten years using iCal on a daily basis I
would have said exactly the same thing as you. Unfortunately as of
this week I have to say "Yes. Familiar."

I use iCal as a standalone in the sense that is is not linked to Mail
or Address Book, nor is it synched to the Cloud, any other devices or
any other Calendars; subscribed or otherwise. It doesn't have any To
Dos.

I make entries by dragging across the required Time Slot then cmd-i
to complete the details. I notice from your routine below that there
is a cmd-e which is what I should be editing from; and I will use
that approach in the future, though as this is the first time I've
ever lost data in iCal I doubt that would be the problem.

I had already cleared out the p.lists but not the cache, which I'm
reluctant to touch at this point. So far, since my first post, there
don't appeat to have been any further disappearances.

My question is, how do I rid the device of this iTunes device and add
mine aside from a total reset?

Your first paragraph outlines the easiest way to attach files to an email, Randy. It is my only method. Dragging picture files onto/into an email allows precise placement, which may be advantageous if one wants to highlight ones text with photos, etcetera.

Your second paragraph is not quite correct. My blank emails do NOT have an Attach button on the toolbar. For that button to be present, I would have had to have added that tool to the bar, a process that (for me) would have been redundant.

The default setup of the current version of Apple Mail includes the Attach button on the toolbar.

If you are using that, and if Attach is NOT there, then you must have previously removed it.

Of course, perhaps you are using an earlier version. No one here is psychic.

>

I too have Word 2004, Willi, and I too have experienced keystroke shortcuts that no longer work. This always seems to occur when I open the app. If I leave Word unclosed, which is the case when Im doing ongoing work on text pieces, then the shortcuts are not erased.

Go here: Word > Tools > Customize > Customize Keyboard. This is also accessible (for me) with F8. Find the section (File, Edit, etc) that you need and recreate your own shortcuts. I find the All Commands section to be the best for it contains everything I want.

Instead you may have to do this: Word > Tools > Customize Toolbars/Menus > Keyboard.

Right now, I am recommanding EditRedo (which was blank) and EditUndo with my personal shortcuts. For EditRedo I choose 'option-return' and command-y'; for EditUndo I choose 'option-delete' and 'command-z'.

The FileSave shortcut never seems to be a problem. Some shortcuts remain and some go.

This may in fact (as you suspect) be a Snow Leopard I have 10.6.8 problem. I dont recall that I had this shortcut problem before upgrading (a year-plus ago) to Snow Leopard.

BTW, going to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts does not seem to help with Word. Choosing Application Shortcuts, I have installed numerous shortcuts for Word, some of which do not work when I reopen the app.

I have the following shortcuts that only work AFTER I have used them ONCE by way of the Word menus: 'control-1' (Show All), 'control-2' (Word Count), 'control-3' (Normal), 'control-4' (Page Layout), 'control-5' (Document), 'control-6' (Project Gallery), 'control-7' (Spelling), 'control-8' (Properties), 'control-9' (Save As), 'control-0' (Print Preview). These I have entered in Application Shortcuts as above.

The Show All shortcut hardly ever works because Word stupidly has (most times) TWO commands controlled by Show All. It always exists in the Word Menu and it sometimes exists in the Word > View menu. When both show up, then the Word-menu one is paled.

Thats the way it be with me, Willi. I just live with it. Hopefully these minor idiosyncrasies will disappear when I do Lion. Oneal

This problem was related to the Snow Leopard Security Update. It broke Rosetta which Office 2004 needs as it is based on PowerPC processor. Apple released a fix which is in Software Update. You just need to install update and Rosetta will be fixed and Office will start working again.

Fortunately, Pages will open existing Word docs but I've been using Word for many years and would like to continue but without buying Office 2011. Is the problem with Word or Snow Leopard? Has anyone else experienced the situation? Willi

These I have entered in Application Shortcuts as above.

This flows from the Western Digital Thunderbird thread.

With all due respect, youve stated your opinion about Western Digitals before, Dan. Others (Randy Singer?) have expressed their negativity towards LaCie external harddrives.

I own two by each manufacturer and all four work just fine. A couple of years ago Id bought a 1 TB Maxtor because I was interested in setting up mirror-raid backups. That machine crapped out on me within a month. Well, that was 3 big bills down the drain right away.

Because I had disassembled the unit to try to find the source of the noise my problem with the Maxtor was definitely physical I could no longer return it for servicing.

Just bought a 1 TB WD portable drive. It was 80 bucks as a door-crasher special. It will probably be okay. Im going to Europe soon and I needed another drive to supplement my LaCie Rugged, which is TB.

The key to backups is redundancy: more than one external harddrive to store data. I use the larger-capacity one for Time Machine TM requires more space and the smaller one for (bootable) clones of my startup drive.

The 'problem' with WD, such as it may have been, is likely old news. I cant see a company like Western Digital not rectifying problems once they become evident. Too much to looze.

To be clear: the sequence here apparently was: the drive failed, then you decided to disassemble it, thereby choosing to violate the warranty, and discarding any chance to recover your money.

A YouTube page in Safari (Version 5.1.2) suggests that I upgrade to Flash Player 10 for "improved playback performance".

Some people some to be averse to having Flash installed. Whats the deal here?

Thanx. Oneal

Hi all,

Any easy way to remove apps from the Launchpad. I have multiple copies of Spotify and Quickbooks from when they update the program.

Thanks,

Re: Doing labels in Pages

Thanks everyone for piping in on this topic.

The short answer to Word label issues is conflict between the grid Word wants to put graphics on is different than grid it wants to align text. Though I tried an assortment of tricks to get words and pics to play well I could not. I ended up using Word to lay down the graphics using the Avery label template. Then I came back with an Excel spreadsheet with proper column and row dimensions to lay down the text. There was a real absurdity about the whole experience.

I seriously thought about dropping $20 for the latest Pages just to see if Apple's implementation of label formatting was only 1/2 as sucky as Microsoft's. I didn't for this project but I may for the next one.
