If the iPad has the latest version of iOS on it, it should not require iTunes on a "Mother Ship" to function.

Regarding my post of a few minutes ago, if the iPad does NOT have iOS5 installed, attaching it to a Mac or PC with iTunes to get it updated should do no damage to the host "Morher Ship".

What do you mean exactly?

You don't want her to share your iTunes/Apple account or iTunes library
(where-ever the content may have come from) & have access to any content you
may have acquired? Then she'd need her own library & account & have to sign
in to it whenever she used iTunes. You could have different user accounts on
your computer & she could have a completely separate set of files & so on.

If you mean that you don't want her iPad getting mixed up with your device &
its settings & choices -- iTunes can keep track of multiple devices and they
can all have different content choices & so on (I have 6). I don't know, &
haven't tried it, if it can say "you need to sign into a different iTunes
account for this device" -- all mine are on my one account.

What content is she hoping to load from your computer, where is it & where
did it come from?

So -- what is it that you are trying to do?

Hi experts!

Thought there might be some iPad knowledge in this group. My wife's laptop
died, and she bought a new iPad 2 today. The first thing required to get the
iPad running is to sync iTunes on a computer.

I was hesitant to attach it to my computer, because I don't want it to sync
to my iTunes account.

Is there a way to setup multiple iTunes accounts on one computer without one
instance of iTunes on the computer? And then make sure the correct account
is active when we plug in the iPad?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Yes, when you turn it on, it presents an iTunes icon with an arrow pointing at it. The small instruction card says you have to connect to a computer. I found a youtube video that shows an iPad being activated, and basically saying "no" to all the prompts to sync with iTunes. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Thanks,

Well, I'm trying to activate the iPad! I want to make sure that her iPad is activated with her own iTunes account. I would not choose to "sync" to iTunes on my laptop because it has about 100 GB of music, most of which my wife isn't interested in.

The easiest 'cleanest' way to accomplish this is to set up a new user account on the computer in question. When iTunes is opened a completely new library will be created.

Interesting....

The Apple iOS5 announcement web page says that with iOS5 you no longer need to have a computer to use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

My own iPod Touch 4G did require a "Mother Ship" when I bought it shortly after they became available, but now that it has been upgraded to iOS5 I can back it up to iCloud, get OS upgrades directly from iCloud, and presumably do a reset from iCloud.

I am not qualified to dispute the claim that Apple is still selling iPads that require connection to a Mac or PC in order to function.

Bim, the first time that you use a device, it has to be connected
to a computer. After that, cloud is fine.

Hey Ryan,

I used your suggestion and it worked as you said – new library created. Plugged in the iPad and attempted to update to iOS 5.0.1. The download seemed to complete but then got error: "an error occurred while backing up this ipad (-5000)" Did a bunch of Googling and a lot of people seemed to have that same problem and they fixed it by disabling MS Security Essentials. I did that but still get the same error. Any ideas?

Also, I connected and sync'd my wife's iPhone to iTunes, then connected the iPad and sync'd her apps to the iPad. It's my understanding that this is supposed to happen automatically without having to sync the two devices to iTunes on the computer. Is that true or am i misinformed?

Thanks a lot!!

Gary:

When it comes to Windows, it's all hypothetical to me as all of my machines are Macs (with the exception of one Linux net book). So I will have to defer to one of our Windows experts on the issue of your update error.

As to the wifi syncing question, take a look at the LifeHacker link below for a quick tutorial of setting it up:

Hi, Nobody responded to my post titled "Superfast podcasts" so I'll try again with a different title.

I had been listening to maybe six or seven podcasts of Praerie Home Companion that all ran at their correct speed. Then I clicked on the next one and it ran very fast. I clicked on several and the same thing happened. Music plays at the right speed. Does anybody have a clue why that happened? Thanks.

If its happening with all of your podcasts, I would try a reset. If it's only happening on a few, check to see if they play properly via iTunes on your desktop machine. If they trouble exists on the desktop as well, then the files are most likely corrupted.

Try checking the info of the podcast. Right click and select "get info" and
check out the tabs and see if something may have been changed.

Hi. When the podcast is playing, check the screen near the top right hand side, under the progress indicator. There is a toggle that changes the speed between 1x, 2x, and 1/2x. Could that be the cause?

I recently hit a button accidently that plays a podcast at 2x speed. on the display, think right hand side, do you see a 2?? I just cycled through till it went back to 1x speed.

Thanks.

I don't have any podcasts on my ipod to check but I believe there is a
speed control on your ipod where you can choose the playback speed.

Hi Alison, That was it! I never noticed that tiny toggle before. Thank you so much!

Hello, it sounds like you have speeded up the playback.
Just below the progress bar there should be a little box with 1X in it.
If it is 2X or higher, change it to 1X
I hope this helps,
Barry

Thank you all for your replies. I have fixed the problem. I must have changed the speed toggle without realizing it. I will watch that in the future. Joyce Keay
