It is the Adobe Reader browser plug-in that cause the problem, not the Adobe Reader that causes the problem.

With Preview installed you don't need the app or browser plug-in operating or installed.

They get saved to your Downloads folder by default, or whichever folder you specified in Safari>Preferences>General.

Alternatively you can type command, option L to open the Safari Download window and then click the magnifying glass beside the file you want to view, and the file will be shown in a Finder window…

Adobe has a knowledgebase article on this.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html
Acrobat family

Adobe Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-in are not compatible with the
Safari 5.1 browser, which will ship with Mac OS X 10.7 and for 10.6
in July 2011. Adobe Reader and Acrobat will continue to work as
standalone applications on Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.6, and will render
PDF documents outside of the browser. In addition, Safari 5.1 renders
PDF documents natively. However, the Adobe Reader and Acrobat plug-
ins will not function as expected in LiveCycle and Acrobat workflows
that require either plug-in to render PDF documents in Safari 5.1.

Recommendation to Customers/Users:
For Acrobat customers who utilize functionality like forms, digital
signatures, portfolios, guides, 3D, extended PDFs and rights
management, and who require the Acrobat plug-in to render PDF
documents in the Safari browser, Adobe recommends that you continue
to use Safari 5.0.x and Mac OS X 10.6. We will provide updates as we
continue to investigate this issue.

A work-around to get PDF's to open in Safari is to use this plug-in:

I may be traveling for work, again, and I want to be able to connect to my Drobo at home.

I realize I may need to leave a Mac on to do this. The Drobo is not a model that directly allows this. The only thing that I have found was Back to my Mac, but with MobileMe gone, and my G4 Quicksilver not capable of running higher than 10.5.8, I don't see how.

I will be traveling with my MBP currently running 10.7.4. The current information from Apple is to use iCloud, but the G4 with 10.5.8 does not have a Sys Pref for iCloud to set it up.

I would prefer to use Apple software to accomplish this. As a last resort I will consider third party software, but right now I am on a tight budget.

Suggestions, please.

Some years ago, I used to reach my home computer using VPN. I had some shareware VPN server and client that worked perfectly for me. I also used to FTP to my home computer (sadly, I haven't been able to get that working at present). At any rate, if you can figure out how to do it, VPN could be a viable option for you.

Otherwise, if you don't need access to the entire Drobo but just to certain key files, you could consider Dropbox, which is free.

Yeah, if I can't do Back to my Mac, I was thinking something along the lines of Timbuktu or VPN, but I want to try it will Apple free software first.

The Drobo is 2TB of stuff. I will be traveling for long stretches at a time and this is for back up to what I am bringing with me.

I don't trust in the cloud, so that is not an option.

I did find an application called VPN Activator that says it activates VPN capabilities that are already built into Mac OS X. It does NOT give you access to Bonjour-connected devices, however. Also, the ports you need to configure conflict with iCloud. If you are not using iCloud, then this free (donation-ware) application might provide the access you want. MIGHT.

Then that's good, because iCloud is the problem. If you don't have iCloud then the ports it uses are free, and you should be able to set up the VPN Activator.

You only have double copies if you actively copied certain emails. Mail does not copy unless instructed to do so. [Mail > Message > Copy To] Emails placed in folders remain single.

Go to Home Folder > Library > Mail > Mailboxes. There you will find two types of folders: a blue one looking like every other folder you have; the other an icon resembling a 'inbox'.

Your emails will be contained in the latter folders. Check your Messages folders, which will contain sundry .emlx files that are stored numerically (eg: 13645.emlx, 13710.emlx, etc). The higher the numeral, the more recent the email in that folder.

I only recently noticed this post and I did not see any responses to it. Not sure if you already have your answer. Hope this helps, Azim.

Just by coincidence last Friday I bought an iPhone car charger that also claims to do iPads and iPods. It is rated a 10 watts the brand is Superior Communications. I bought it locally at a cell phone accessory store called Xessory in Delaware County, PA.

then i stopped at my VW dealer and traded my Jetta for a 2012 model. This Jetta has a iPhone cord in the glove box that will charge the phone besides connecting to the radio. (It also has blue tooth connectivity for the iPhone.

So buy a car charger for about $18 or buy a VW.

I checked the link, Randy, and I noticed (on the SideEffects webpage) that the Finder-folder representations have icons/text twice the size of what Ive got.

I checked Finder Help, however there is nothing that tells how to vary font/icon sizes. Ive tried to resolve this before, however nothing was suggested.

Thanx for the quick getback, Jim.

I run 10.6.8 and there is no General section in Systems Preferences.

There is an Appearance section, however nothing about changing sizes.

Neither does Finder > Preferences > Sidebar have anything I can use.

Our wireless router died, so my husband rewired the house to accommodate wired service. Both computers are now internet capable using ethernet cables. But we need a WIRED router so that both computers can be on-line simultaneously. If possible, we prefer not spending high dollars on this. This is a temporary fix, and we only want the router in case our wireless router bites the dust again. Which router do you recommend? We're trying for the latest technology, so that it will be able to run multiple wired devices if we found ourselves wireless again.

(We borrowed a linksys 10/100 NH1005 but it does not have the capability of keeping both iMacs on-line at the same time). After searching on-line forums, we discovered this technology is not sufficient.

We are running 2 intel iMacs (one is 12 months old, the other is 20 months old) with X.6.8. They are about 60' apart. Thanks for your help in advance.

Silly me.
I assumed since you were replying to something (restoring sidebar icon color) that is a Lion issue, that you were running Lion....

Howdy.

I think, Donna, you have got some confused or mixed terms going on.

The Linksys 10/100 NH1005 Hub is not the problem plus it is not a
router. The Linksys 10/100 NH1005 Hub can have up to 5 computers
connected to each other and to a router. The router would provide the
connection to the Internet and let all devices connected to the Hub use
the Internet.

You have to connect the Linksys 10/100 NH1005 to a router device and
that router device is then connected to the internet.

The problem with the Linksys 10/100 NH1005 Hub is that it is an
Ethernet "Hub" and isn't an Ethernet "Switch," (and it's not a router
at all). Plus it has the two Ethernet speeds of 10 and 100 BaseT (slow
and medium speed) but you should get an Ethernet Switch with 10 / 100 /
and 1000 speed Ethernet since both of your Macs of the ability to move
data at 10 / 100 / and 1000 speeds.

There is a difference in how an Ethernet Switch and an Ethernet Hub
work and the Switch is the better device.

You should look for a type of router that is a combination of devices.
The problem is that there are hundreds and hundreds of these on the
market so you have to do a little investigating to figure out what to
get.

You need to determine also how the router will connect to your internet
service. Is it via a cable TV company coaxial cable (the round black
cable), is it via a DSL link over a standard telephone line? is it
something else?

Here is an example of a combination router. It's like a 3-in-1 package
sort or thing.

At Amazon.com, look at the

Cisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit Router

New price is $38.99 USD and they have a lower refurbished price model
also.

This router has:

1. A Coaxial / Cable plug for cable Internet connection and a port for
DSL Internet connection (via a DSL phone line). Note that cable would
be significantly faster.

2. WiFi (antenna and wireless network).

3. Four Ethernet Gigabit ports (Gigabit means the 1000 speed Ethernet,
but also does 100 and 10 speed).

I'm just using this item as an example and many other companies make
similar routers.

With this or a similar 3-in-1 type of router, you would not need the
Linksys 10/100 NH1005 Hub.

With this or a similar device, you could use the wired Ethernet ports
and you could also use the WiFi wireless. For example, if you got an
iPhone or iPad or other WiFi device, it could use the WiFi while your
computers still used the wired Ethernet.

Hope that makes some sense. This router stuff is complex sounding when
you first tackle it but oddly it is pretty simple to set up and use.
Don't be dismayed!!

Good luck.

To add to Dan's reply, what sort of wireless router was it? One without a
built-in ethernet switch? This would be very unusual. Did the router die or
just the wireless function?

Silly me, Jim, for presuming that the Finder-sidebar-font/icon size could be adjusted anywhere other than Lion. Thanx again for the quick getback and for the update.

Hi, until Lion (or some update of Lion) I was using a little app called "Startup Sound Pref Pane" to mute the startup chime on my computer.

This is important to me because I get up very early in the morning and other people are sleeping.

It has stopped working. I can't find an update for it or an alternative. I see that there is another called Startup Chime Stopper, but it doesn't work for me, either.

Does anyone know an app or a Terminal command that would mute the Startup chime in Lion?
