I've researched my problem and found nothing, I like to do this before I ask.
I bought an iPad (4 Retina) a couple of days ago so thought I would put some music on it via itunes. I am not one for playing music on the computer and the only 4 pack CD I have installed is Rod Stewart's Great American songbook!
I have an iMac OSX 10.5.8 Leopard where the CDs are already loaded, but I found this is too ancient to share directly with the iPad.
I have a Macbook OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard which can work with the iPad. I totally updated this yesterday included getting the latest iTunes.
So first I set up Home sharing from iMac to the Macbook and the music played alright, then I set up the iPad and the music played.
The problem is if the iMac is asleep, the Macbook and iPad don't play. They switch off the music when I put the IMac to sleep.
I've been through all the settings but maybe I've missed something. On the Macbook system preferences- home sharing - I've ticked DVD/CD sharing but I had to turn off the firewall to be able to do that , I can't see anything similar on the older iMac.
I'm thinking I am justing missing something to allow the Macbook and iPad to use the iMac when it is asleep.
I would appreciate any advice please.

Since your iPad is new you can call Apple Support & they will walk you through the process you are asking about. Here is a link with their number & other information:

If the iMac is asleep, then it cannot also be sharing its files... If you want to use this solution, you need to keep the iMac awake whilst doing so. No way around his one.
Instead, you would probably be better syncing the files you want to play in the iPad, directly to it via iTunes. Unfortunately, your 10.5 system might be too old to allow this to a new generation iPad, as the iTunes version is likely too old...

Hello Chris, Someone suggested I ring Apple, I used the link mentioned and they called me back within seconds, however the CPU staff in Kentucky don't work Sundays, so I'm in touch with them tomorrow.
I know the iMac is too old to synch with the Ipad, which is why I did the home share with all three computers. The Macbook is I think compatible and I did wonder about loading the 4 CDs into itunes again from the Macbook, if iTunes will let me load the same CDs twice, and then I could turn off the Home Share with the iMac. This is just me thinking as I write.
Or could I just turn off the home sharing altogether and access my itunes from the ipad.... you know I didn't think of that, the first thing I thought was the CDs are on the Imac and I'll have to share with that. Do you think that will work.

Pat, thank you for this, I got online right away and within seconds they had called me(from Kentucky), however the CPU unit doesn't work on Sundays so have arranged to ring tomorrow. I'll report back to the group if I get any success.

I think I've found a solution to my own problem.
I've turned off the Home Sharing, loaded one of the 4 CDs on to the Macbook which can work with the ipad, plugged the iPad into the Macbook and manually synched it.... and it's worked. I tried the Home Sharing because I didn't have the Cds loaded on to the Macbook iTunes, so trying to save a few minutes led me to spend some hours trying to work it out. There has to be a motto here! Now I can load the other CDs.

With Home Sharing turned on & both computers authorized (Store in the iTunes menu), you can select all the tracks you want moved from the library of the host computer & drag them to the library of the other computer.

Hi: I posted this a few days ago and didn't get any replies, so I thought I would try again. Basically, if I delete photos from Dropbox and Sugarsync, will it have any effect on photos on the Mac, which does not have DB or SS on it?
Thanks,
Carol

Carol, it sounds like you have these pictures stored in "3" different places which means to me that you have three sets of these pictures. I would assume deleting them from DropBox and SugarSync would not affect the ones on the iMac. I am only speculating here because I have never used DropBox, nor have I heard about SugarSync and have no idea what it does. Frankly what I would do if I was not sure what would happen is copy the pictures to a detachable medium such as a USB flash card and detach it from the computer and then delete the two alternate sources and then see if they are still on the iMac. If they are, then you have them on your computer and the flash card(s).
Good luck in what ever you do,
Forrest

I don't know if this would help..but I tried out dropbox and didn't like
it. When I uninstalled it, the two shots I had there, disappeared, never to
be seen again.

Jeannie,
When you move a file on your computer to the /Dropbox folder, it MOVES there. It isn't copied. If you want to abandon Dropbox but keep its contents, you need to copy those contents to another location before deleting the Dropbox folder.
On the other hand, if you upload a file to Dropbox using the web interface, then it copies up to the web, then is copied back to your Dropbox folder. The original that you uploaded via the web stays where you had it in the first place, and is not lost if you delete the Dropbox folder.

Thanks, Daley, unfortunately, I learned that too late, as those were 2 fave
shots..and they are gone. I had wanted to see if I could send raw shots to
a friend, but the time involved was soo long, it wasn't worth it..and just
think those were NOT from a 36mp camera, such as he would have sent to
me..and I have a pretty fast dsl

Carol, I don't use SugarSync so can't comment on that. But I do use
Dropbox, love it, but deleting anything in Dropbox does not affect anything
on your Mac. I suspect the same to be true for SugarSync, but not sure
definitely....Jim

In my never ending compulsion to do things faster, I have been stumped by the quickest method for getting photos from web or mail to iPhoto. Yes, I know I can drag and drop, but first I have to open iPhoto and then reposition in Mail to grab all the photos. Tedious, and doesn't work for a browser or Facebook or whatever.
Anyone have any tricks for accomplishing this quicker, like browser add-on or send to folders or a watch folder?
Should I spring for iPhoto 11 and Mtn Lion to make all my problems go away?
Cheers,

When I do something like a system upgrade with a "restart" required and after the iMac has been on for several hours, the cursor is frozen in place when the computer comes back up. It finally breaks loose on its own after about 10 minutes. This happens with either a Bluetooth or Apple USB mouse. Winter or summer makes no difference.
If I restart the computer after it has been on for only about 1 hour or if I shut down the night before and restart the next morning, the cursor works as soon as the computer comes up.
