Howdy.

The Microsoft audio and video formats .wma and .wmv are a constant
source of problems.

In the usual Microsoft manner of not thinking thing through, or using
short-term solutions, .wma and .wmv files do not have a common
standard.

Microsoft has changed these file formats so often that some play on
some devices and some don't play.

In addition, Microsoft loves DRM (digital rights management - aka copy
protection) and this file format is also proprietary, not open, and has
been changed.

For example, I have a Sony PlayStation 3 connected to my
Ethernet/Internet and large screen TV and I use the BluRay player and
the internet Amazon and Netflix streaming for movies.

Sometimes I can play MS .WMV videos and sometimes I can't via the PS3.

There is a way to remove copy protection from .wma files which is
similar to how it can be removed from the old Apple iTunes purchased
"protected" mpg files. Apple stopped using copy protection some years
ago.

You can burn the files you received to a standard audio CD disc and
then import what was burned into iTunes. You might have to use a
PeeCee to do this first burn.

If you download and install the free Flip4Mac codec, you should then be
able to use most Macintosh compatible programs that understand
QuickTime to play and hear the Microsoft file formats. After
installing Flip4Mac, you should find a new panel for it in System
Preferences. You do not need to use the Flip4Mac player to play these
files. Try VLC or an Apple QuickTime player or other QT compatible
player.

It's all another one of the many little penalties people pay for
dealing with Microsoft.

I am not sure if this situation is related but I also had a terrible time with an iphone 4S syncing with my MB Pro 10.7.5. All software was up to date. I set up icloud and then the problems started. Events were duplicated on my mac and phone EVERY time I synced.

I tried Apple Tech Support and they referred me to the nearest apple store (after many hours on the phone trying to resolve it) saying that it sounded like the iphone was "bad".

Went to the store, got a new iphone and tried again with my MB Pro and new phone at the Apple store with three apple genius people watching - and the problem came right back.

After spending most of my work day watching them try various solutions, they simply said to not use iCloud!

Since then I sync using usb and everything is fine. I presume if neither Apple Tech Support or three genius folks can solve the problem and advise against using icloud there may be some weird problems in play. So, I stay "off the cloud" as I have an practice to run.

Sometimes the simplest fix appears to be "Just say no" to icloud.

Not may advice. Apple's.

John,

If you sync contacts and calendar through both iTunes and iCloud you will end up with duplicates. Use one or the other.

No.

Where *did* you get that idea?

I don't want to raise the temperature here, but I really am curious as to
where Brent got the idea that Apple have dropped the HFS+ format.

(I hope it's not the trivial "accounting" change from binary to decimal
capacity figures you see in Get Info, etc.)

A number of years ago there were persistent rumors that a change of hard drive format was imminent. I think that Apple was considering a move to a standard from Oracle, if I recall correctly. OS X 10.whatever was subsequently released and everyone was surprised that HFS+ was still being used. No explanation one way or the other was forthcoming from Apple.

ZFS, I think, or a variant:

Very constructive to the discussion, HAL9000.

Your sarcasm reflects back upon you. To quote you, "It's flat."

I was just invited to experiment w iWork in the iCloud. I don't use iWork and am not a developer. Wont be using it, but assume Apple is moving to renting us services as needed.

Hard to get my head around owning nothing but a monitor and renting my apps.

My nearly new MacBook Pro Retina sometimes won't wake up from sleep. I haven't been able to isolate it to certain situations. When this occurs, I have blank screens and no key strokes seem to do anything. Sometimes I will try closing the lid again and reopening it, and when I do sometimes the cursor arrow appears in the upper left corner of the external monitor, but doesn't respond to trackpad movement.

I end up having to turn the computer off, and when I turn it back on it boots up with the message that it was shut down due to a problem and do I want to reopen the windows that were open at the time. I usually accept that, and everything comes back up just fine.

Possibly significant:
I have it connected to an external monitor (HDMI)
I have it connected to an external hard drive, which I use for Time Machine backups
I take advantage of the ability to have Time Machine wake the computer up to perform a backup, even when it is asleep with the lid closed

I also experience the occasional "Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory." I haven't been able to solve that either, and don't know whether it might be what is happening whilst the computer is sleeping and causing the problem. I have noticed the Carbonite Daemon sometimes uses more than 100% CPU, and so did SafariDAVClient until I switched to Chrome.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Best,

Jim

I am not sure it is the same issue but you may want to change the
sleepimage setting - my Airs would do this occasionally and after much
Googling the issue was a side effect from the "sleep image" setting being
set to a certain option (0 does one thing, 1 does another, 2, does another,
3 does another) - and I have no idea which one it was set to or what I
changed it to but did resolve issue.
