I prefer to use Apache Open Office,
which works the same as office, but is free.
Give it a try!

Howdy.

It's a good price partly because it's the Home and Student flavor.

If you buy this, first be sure the serial number/ownership can transfer
legally to you.

There is a free converter program from Microsoft that can convert .DOCX
format files to .DOC files. You can download it from Microsoft.

A number of Apple programs like TextEdit that come with your Mac can
open DOCX files.

There are also a number of open source office programs with word
processing programs that can open DOCX files.

Open Office.
LibreOffice.
NeoOffice.
KOffice.

I've tried both Open Office and NeoOffice but it was several years
ago. I've never tried LibreOffice or KOffice. KOffice is, I think,
done by a Canadian company.

For occasional use, one of these might do just fine.

Still not working.

My main computer (mini) uses Ethernet so usually have Airport off.

I've done this:

1. Turn on Airport in my mini

2. Confirm Sys Prefs > Network shows Ethernet uppermost in the left column of connections

3. Confirm Sys Prefs > Sharing shows "Internet Sharing" is checked

4. Pull down Airport Menu and choose "Create Network", choose a network name & password.
The Airport menu bar icon now contains a small mac icon.

5. Open Settings > Wi-Fi in both the iPod Touch & iPhone and choose the mini wireless network
and enter the password when asked.
I receive a 192.168... IP address.

When checking mail on either iDevice I get "Connection to the server failed" error message.

The signal strength icon on the iDevices shows 4 bars (full strength).

Just as a another factoid, this iPhone and iPod Touch both work flawlessly when connected to various wireless networks I use at businesses and friend's homes.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

I've been looking for a list of programs Mavericks will be able to run/not run. Haven't found one yet. Is such a thing available?

I'm still trying to decide when to buy a new iMac/27" and don't know whether to wait for Mavericks to be shipped on new computers or not.

Hi

Good Day.

If you are badly in need of a Mac go for the current model.

If you are going for new Mac with 10.9 then consider the below:
1. Your existing printer or scanner may not be supported.
2. Third party plug-ins may not work , if you are using some video or audio
editing software.
3. Sometimes external drives won't mount.

Iam on 10.9 numbers is working fine for me. But formulas in excel is not
working. Most of the Adobe apps of CS5 and CS5.5 are not working.
Toast wont burn cds properly.

But I like App nap , tagging and multi Window.

Remember every OS needs atleast first one update to fix issue.

Regards
Ik

If your are on Preview 2, it is reasonable to state what DOES run.
It is NOT reasonable to state what will NOT run in the eventual final version.

I found the statement that iWork would not run to be pretty shocking. I have rescued so many people who had depended on AppleWorks for years and years, by using iWork. If it's going away, I sure hope it's going to replaced, or I'm going to feel quite the fool for recommending it to those people.

What do you mean, "iPhone runs but not well"? You mean you can't synch with iTunes?

I Think Apple is trying to move everyone to the iCloud iWorks. The one that
really dose not work at all is Keynote but Pages and Number will Crash
frequently and not really usable. But everything else runs just fine all
Browsers work well and Office 2011 run like a champ as well.

With exactly zero inside information (I elected NOT to play with the Mavericks Developer Preview that I was offered), I will state my absolute certainty that the iWork suite, in some form, will be working with 10.9 before the release date.

It's just spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) to make statements about software that doesn't work under a prerelease version of the OS.

As Jim said. Information about what applications *work* may be of merit but I take any statements about apps that don't with a large grain of salt.

The thing is still under development.

Guess this is kind of late, but my girl and I are exchanging iPod
Touches. She has a 5th gen on the way, courtesy of me, and I am getting
her 4th gen, also was courtesy of me!

I find no way of making the iPod 'mine' aside from a full restore.

Is there an alternative method other than changing the Apple IDs on the
unit. Apple will only allow this to be done once every 90 days, (thanks
AAPL!). Changing IDs locks all the previous owners apps and media and
does NOT allow removal of the apps or media.

Beware before changing the iCloud prefs on a unit. This is now forcing
a restore to the unit for me.

Just curious if there is an alternative.

TIA
