Believe me we went through all that at the Apple store. That was not the issue. We were only syncing through "the cloud" and the duplicates kept replicating.

To this day no one at Apple Tech support or the local genius crowd can tell me why this happened.

I've a new MB Air and have no intentions of wasting a day or two of my practice trying to puzzle out that mystery.

John:

I would hope so, but you did not mention that. Assumption is the mother of all screw ups. It is sometimes good to cover the basics again.

And the techs can not always give you an reason why, especially not knowing the total system. And like you implied, if it is fixed, don't waste any more time on it.

If I were, perhaps retired, and had some time on my hands, I'd go back to Apple with my MB Pro and MB Air and my phone and try to solve this mystery.

Until that time comes, or I discover the equivalent of a Mac Sherlock Holmes, I'm letting the cloud bank alone!

I have several small external back up drives (mostly WD and Seagate) I used when I backed up on my now long gone Windows machines.

I would like to be able to use them to back up data from my Mac, but I don't seem able to do it. I was hoping to format these drives and start from scratch with my Mac.

Any suggestions? I no longer have access to computers using Windows.

Thanks,

Paul

You can use a 3rd party (Like PARAGON NTFS) to read and write NTFS drives. But i strongly recommend to after make some backup files from this harddrives, format they to OSX.

Assuming that you don't need the data on the drives, I think you should be able to reformat (erase) them with Disk Utility. What happens when you mount the drives? What happens when you open them?

Did you not see them in Disk Utility? Or were the options grayed out, or something? Please describe what you did. "I don't seem to be able to do it" doesn't give us much to go on.

Use Apple's Disk Utility to reformat the drives for your Macintosh. Here are the instructions:

http://help.bombich.com/kb/overview/preparing-your-backup-disk-for-a-backup-of-mac-os-x
Scroll down to: "Follow these steps to format your hard drive as an HFS+ volume:"

This procedure will erase all of the Windows data that is currently on the drives.

I have DropBox and SugarSync on my iPads, iPhone and a PC. I haven't put them on the iMac.
Since I have photos in the Cloud and have no one else I want to share them with, I don't need them on DropBox or SugarSync. Yet early on, before I knew any better, I managed to get photos on there which are taking up valuable space.
If I delete photos from those programs, apparently they are deleted everywhere I have a DB or SS link.
So since all the pictures are also on the iMac, am I safe to delete them?
Or is there a better way to delete them so I can still keep them on the iPads and iPhone?
Thanks.
Carol

My hard drive has too many corrupted sectors to load snow leopard.

I have an iMac running snow leopard. It was running slow, I checked the console logs and saw the there were a lot of read errors.

Ran Disk Utility from the install disk, verified OK. Thought I would reinstall Snow Leopard. Install very slow and right at the end it failed. Tried two more times All failed. Took it to the Genius Bar. They ran a diagnostic and it showed a lot of bad sectors.

Nothing super critical on the drive, I keep the important stuff on email (just send it to yourself as an attachment) but there is stuff I would rather not lose.

Two things:
1.I am looking for a program that would read the files and write them to a flash drive. After all, the installer can load anything not just the OS. There must be a program out there that loads a HD read/USB write routine. Any ideas?

2. The iMac is more than 5 years old so the Apple Store cannot order a replacement drive. Any suggestions where I could get one?

TIA,

Ihor

You have no backups that contain the stuff "you would rather not lose"? Can
you "see" any of it when running from the install DVD?

Which iMac is it, and how large is the drive? There's no problem in
obtaining drives but we need some idea of what you need.

The very next thing that should be done at this point is to copy/backup anything on the sick drive that can possibly be read. Before doing ANYTHING else.

I usually use OWC:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD>
or NewEgg:

Yes, Dave, if you don't have another piece of hardware, then you need to have the Mac create a computer-to-computer network. Otherwise it is like one tin cans, with no string and a second can.

You need to set up the network and set up the sharing, like I said before.

I do as you say and none of the devices that want to share the internet (ie, iPhones, other Macs) don't see a wireless broadcast to connect to.

I am now thinking that I need to set up a computer-to-computer network in order to share the internet connection over this link?
