Hi Barbara,
I just went through that and called AppleCare. What they had me do was a forced shut down, I think by clicking on the apple in the upper left corner. Then they had me unplug the iMac cord from the machine, wait for I think 30 seconds. Then plug it in and wait for 30 seconds. Then restart the machine. No problem after that.
Carol

When I do something like a system upgrade with a "restart" required and after the iMac has been on for several hours, the cursor is frozen in place when the computer comes back up. It finally breaks loose on its own after about 10 minutes. This happens with either a Bluetooth or Apple USB mouse. Winter or summer makes no difference.

If I restart the computer after it has been on for only about 1 hour or if I shut down the night before and restart the next morning, the cursor works as soon as the computer comes up.

The iMac has been like this ever since it was purchased new from the Apple Online Store in December 2012. Everything else works fine. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Hi Carol,

In my situation I would not be able to click on the Apple without the use of the cursor. Instead I could hold down the power button on the back to force quit.

Did the AppleCare instructions completely cure the problem? In other words is it the frozen cursor after restart problem gone for good?

Does the keyboard work? The keystroke for shutdown is cmd-opt-ctrl-esc, or just wait for the mouse. Once you are shut down properly, unplug. Now push the power button twice (nothing should happen since you are unplugged) and wait for at least 60 seconds after you have done this. Now plug the computer back in and wait another 10 seconds. Then restart.

If this helps, great. If not, do this all again but when you restart this time, hold down the opt-cmd-p-r keys immediately. That's four keys (in other words, hold Apple and Option and P and R simultaneously). Yup, it requires two hands. Hold these down until you hear the boot chime and continue holding until you hear the chime a second time, THEN release and let the system continue booting.

With luck, the problem is now solved. If not, you probably have software issue of somekind. Check this be restarting in Safe Mode. If the problem does not happen in Safe Mode, we need to look for the startup application that is causing the problem.

Cheers,

Pat, thank you for the earlier link and for the other information. I don't really know iTunes, I don't usually play music on the computer, it was just getting my new 'toy' the ipad that I thought I would.

I tried the Home Sharing because I didn't have the Cds loaded on to the Macbook iTunes, so trying to save a few minutes led me to spend some hours trying to work it out. There has to be a motto here! Now I can load the other CDs.

By "making it mine" do you simply mean the name? You can change this the
usual "Mac way" in the iTunes sidebar: click-then-return.

The question is tricky. It sounds like what you want to do is to change the iPod to sync with your iCloud account while retaining everything the iPod now contains, which is "owned" by another account. You are effectively merging two accounts. Apple has no functions for doing this, anywhere on any device. Always been a complaint, but it's pretty basic to maintaining DRM control.

However, this doesn't mean it's not possible. It's just not directly supported. And how you achieve it depends on the kind of data you are trying to merge and whether it is DRM protected or not. Essentially what you need to do is back up whatever you want to preserve to another location, reset the iPod to your account, then restore what you want from the other account. This is only hard if what you want is DRM protected but is always possible in my experience so far.

Even DRM protected items can be synchronized with multiple accounts and devices. For instance, I have apps purchased with two distinct accounts (one work and one personal) on my iPhone. I've also synced apps to multiple iPads using different accounts. And there are very basic "end run" techniques for almost everything. For instance, apps can be copied directly without using the app store and music file DRM can be bypassed by burning to CD and re-ripping. Never tried to bypass DRM on movies.

It is very difficult to advise you blind since individual devices and generations of software behave differently. For instance, it's relatively easy to sync an iphone to an account that is not it's "owner" account, but an iPad can only be synced to one account at a time. You must change the owner in the preferences to sync to another account and then sync back. I don't really use iCloud at the moment so have not negotiated that problem yet but iCloud's entire design is intended to sync one account to multiple devices, the exact opposite of what you are trying to do. Personally, I would turn off iCloud and sync to iTunes in order to solve this problem and not turn iCloud back on until I was done merging.

Cheers,

It was *always* called "AirPort" until 10.7. Of course, this often caused
confusion because it wasn't always clear whether someone meant the Wi-Fi
function, the card in the Mac, or the base station/router.

Why? I didn't, and it is *not* required for Internet Sharing.

Yes it did show those selections. But they were grayed-out ... not sure why.
And the "Airport" (a.k.a "Wi-Fi") menu bar icon showed a little computer icon inside it.

Because it didn't work with just "sharing" turned on. Just trying all possible combinations and hoping something makes it work.

I finally got it to work. See other post under this subject.

Well, yes and no.

I rebooted the mini into 10.8. Followed the same steps you helped me determine, and... no internet sharing accomplished. Same symptoms: everything looks like it is working, but no access in the iPod Touch or iPhone.

(And yes, the mini can use another wireless network in the building -- friend loaned me his pw just to try it out -- and it works as expected.)

Then I booted back into 10.6.8 and... it works.

As Otto pointed out no "create a network" is needed, only turning on Share Internet option in Sys Prefs > Sharing.

The symbol inside the Airport (a.k.a. "Wi-Fi") menu bar icon is now an arrow pointing up (as opposed to the computer icon when this was not working).

I now know how to set up Internet Sharing but I'm still not sure how to make it work. I guess restarting the mini might have been the ticket. Won't know until next time.

Thank again Brent for the benefit of your extensive expertise.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

I'm glad you got it working,

What I meant to say was your 2011 mac mini, came with 10.7. If you are running 10.6.8 on it, that could explain the reason you are having difficulties. Normally, you can not run an OS earlier than what was first installed on it. I have heard of some people managing to get 10.6 to work on some that came out with 10.7, but I have not heard on how trouble free that have or have not been.

I can not imagine that the final release would not work with these
programs. I am hoping they will correct the Photoshop program, as that
alone would stop me from upgrading to Mavericks. I have CS6, and am not on
the cloud, so I doubt that Adobe would do anything to help me.

I posted this question on the Adobe Photoshop group but got no answer so I guess there aren't enough Mac users there. :(

I got a new Canon 6D, I shoot RAW, and I am using CS6 and Lightroom 4.4 in OS X
10.6.8.

In the Camera Raw Prefs in CS6, it says I have ACR 8.0.1.43 and in LR it says I
have Camera Raw 7.4. No idea why theres difference as both have been updated.

Both apps work fine with my new RAW files from my new camera and no complaints there, but despite the updates to ACR, the OS X finder can't give me a preview of the image in the icon itself so I can only get a generic CS6 icon. Without the preview in the Finder icon, I'm left guessing as to what image I'm looking at till I open it. Presently there are 2 work arounds:
Using Lightroom for specific libraries, or using Bridge. I'd prefer not having to use an application to browse through gazzillions of images and instead be able to open a folder and just see what's in there.

More specifics: I offload my images and video from my camera's card using Apple's Image Capture and I get image previews in that app, and Bridge gives previews of all RAW files as
well. I've booted to my Utility drive and run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. I still have Photoshop CS5 installed temporarily.

I've Googled this in every way I could think of without a correct answer to this
specific issue, so I'm wondering if anyone else has an answer as to how to get
the OS X finder to give a preview of my new RAW images.

Thanks for any help!

Tammy,

I know nothing about Check (formerly Pageone) or the company behind it. I just have an aversion to putting all my financial information in one place. So far, it seems like all of the major financial institutions and credit card companies have had security leaks.

I would not put all of my eggs in one basket.

Just my paranoid opinion.
