Backup/Restore Question
Posted by: "Jo Anne Bruehert" bluehaze911@gmail.com bluehaze911

Background:
Got a new, unlocked 4S last week from Apple. Went to ATT and got micro sim
card. When I got home, I noticed that I couldn't send picture messages to
anyone not on iOS5 (will only send MMSes using iMessage). Went back to ATT
which switched out sim card, played with settings in the system and with
settings on my phone. After resetting network settings as a last thing to
try, I was able to send an MMS but by the time I got home, I was unable to
again. I tried resetting the network settings again and turning off all the
options the ATT service rep did but it did not work. Went back to ATT and
they said there was nothing left for them to try, that it's the phone and to
go to Apple. Drove to Apple who said it's probably a software issue, to
reset the phone back to factory settings, set up the iPhone as new and sync
with iTunes. I did that, MMS worked but I restored from the backup when I
saw all the pictures missing and all the settings I was going to have to
re-do but didn't have the time then. To my surprise, MMS started working
but then stopped again after sending 2 MMSes.
My question:
After setting up the phone as new, I'd like to at least restore text
messages and pictures without restoring anything else. Can this be done? I
have backed up the phone to both iCloud and my PC (Win7). I read about
iBackupBot and installed it. I was able to restore the text messages using
it but not pictures. Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm looking for a "find my parked car" app that actually works in large parking lots. I download several and none are any good for parking lots. They want me to use the street.
Please, any input is a help.
Thanks, all.

When I was in Chicago, I just used the built in maps app. I tapped the
curled page on the bottom right, tapped drop pin. Went about my day,
came back to the car and tapped on the arrow on the pin and selected
remove pin. Did that the whole trip with no problems.

One of the first Apps I downloaded, even before I had an iPhone with a built-in compass, was "Compass Go". You can mark any location as a destination, and it will lead you m=back to it.

(1) Use Google Earth, it is a free app.
(2) Tap find your location icon in lower left.
(3) Do a screen capture by doing the home and power buttons at the same time.
When you come out to find your car:
(1) Open the camera roll and find the screen capture you did. That will give you the GPS coordinates where you parked. BUT NOT A PICTURE OF YOUR CAR!
(2) Open Google Earth
(3) Hit the current location icon and get the GPS coordinates where you are.
(4) Walking around a bit and hitting the current location icon should allow you to match up the GPS coordinates. Your car should be somewhere close by.
This obviously works best in large parking lots. And assumes you know which direction to walk to match up the GPS coordinates.

I don't know what you mean. When you drop a pin, it drops a pin on
your exact location (+/- 10'). It's got nothing to do with an
intersection or street. I.e. if I go to a mall and drop a pin to mark
my car, the pin is my car, not the nearest street.

Everything you have said is true. Now take it one step farther. From the other side of the mall and get the route from there to your car. Google maps will route using streets. Not across the parking lot.
In a mall parking lot I can find my car without GPS. But at Disney World or Candlestick park it would be helpful to have a route across the parking lot instead of following the blue dot.

So the app needs to be location aware to the extent that it knows how
to route you around attractions at Disney or other large venue? I
don't think there is one. I just zoom out till I see myself and my
dropped pin and make my way towards it. I don't actually use the
routing feature. Just head towards the pin since the iPhone has a
compass and can tell which direction you're facing.

That approach does have some merit. In fact there is an app that uses the compas along with the GPS & since its free I download it and tru it out. My only concern is its not been updated for over a year and only refers to the 3Gs so my not run well on a 4S with iOS 5.0.1.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Infinity Blade 2 hits
the App Store: This is your killer game to brag about the power of
Apple's A5 chip via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 11/30/11
Infinity Blade is to the iPad what the Halo series is to the Xbox 360
(or the Gran Turismo franchise to the PlayStation 3). That is, a killer
game – a title so compelling that not only does it showcases what's
possible on a platform, but is also so impressive that folks go out and
buy the hardware just to be able to play that particular game. A killer
title for iPad gamers has to be Chair Entertainment's Infinity Blade.
Classed as the first iOS game to run on the Unreal Engine, Infinity
Blade went on to become the fastest-grossing app in the history of iOS,
selling $1.6 million in four days. Three major updates later, Chair
Entertainment launches Infinity Blade 2, a sequel to the elegiac action
masterpiece. Here's the blurb:
Journey into the world of the Deathless tyrants and their legion of
Titans. Build skills and upgrade characters… all while delving deeper
into this mysterious, timeless adventure.
Expect forty new locations (up from ten in the original title), many
new hit points, weapons and spells, plus a bunch of other nuances and
nice-to-haves. Chair is already thinking post-launch, teasing an update
with the Clash Mobs feature where a bunch of other players attack a
monster with millions of hit points. In case you were wondering, IGN
gave Infinity Blade 2 a 10. A cornerstone of the sequel is, of course,
graphics.
The game features console-quality lighting effects.
The game runs fine on the original iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and
third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. However, you'll want to enjoy
it on your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S due to optimizations that really push
the envelope of what's possible on Apple's A5 chip, especially in the
lighting and shading department. Make no mistake, this is one game that
you'll want to show off to your Android-toting friends.
More information is available at the official site. The game hit the
New Zealand App Store this morning. You should expect it in the U.S.
store later today, around midnight, priced at $9.99 and available at
this URL (a 941MB universal binary download). To celebrate the launch
of Infinity Blade 2, Chair slashed the original Infinity Blade to just
six bucks for a limited time. Release notes and more clips after the
break, including Donald Mustard (creative director), Adam Ford
(artistic director) and Geremy Mustard (technical director) talking the
visuals.

Thank you. After checking closely, I found that the automatic date/time was switched off. Don't know how it happened, but I did turn airplane mode off and on several times during the trip. Maybe that had something to do with the problem since I don't remember shutting it off myself. Or perhaps it was the result of a senior moment. =-)

Paul, iTunes keeps each device separate I have my iPod touch, 2
iPhones, and iPad and it knows what is on each unit and keeps them
just the way that I want even when I change my mind and set it
up different, it then keeps that set up for that device.

iTunes knows the difference. You can give it a special name... "Paul's iPad"
We have an iPod, iPod Touch, iPad and two iPhones and it knows how we
have each setup.
We have more Video and drawing, writing stuff on the iPad and music,
audiobooks, podcasts on the others.
Congrats on your new iPad!
There are lots of app sales going on for the Holidays. I use
www.appshopper.com to let me know when something goes on sale.
Also places like Best Buy and others often have sales of 15-20+% on
iTunes gift cards. They can be used to buy Apps, Music, movies?. An
iTunes card on sale and used for a Sale App is really great.
-- Watch some online sales. Don't buy if they charge you tax on an
iTunes card. Apple charges the TAX when you use and buy the App/Music.
Tax on the card and then the sale is double tax.
