new iWeb problem

Posted by: "Willi Miller" caribsea@bellsouth.net   caribsea@bellsouth.net

thanks for the counter help. Now I'm stuck on another problem and can't find the answer, or am not asking the right questions. I added photos to the iWeb site, then decided to delete a couple and rearrange others. In iWeb, everything looks great. I save and publish changes (also tried entire site) but the changes don't show up in Safari. If I click on one of the deleted pictures nothing happens but the slideshow opens when others are clicked and the deleted photos don't appear in the slideshow. I'm stumped.

Clear the cache in Safari, that should do it, had similar issue. Also check your site with another browser (Firefox).

Are you using the web.me site with Apple or have you found a new place? Has anyone heard anything about the future of the web.me?

If your question was about the future of the web pages hosted at MobileMe.com, yes they will go away 6/30/12. If you want to keep them up, then move them before then.

Thanks so much!

Overall, I'm very happy with my switch from Entourage to Mail, but it's missing a few things (such as the ability to transmit attachments "attached," rather than inline).

Half way through the Steve Jobs biography (having read the vignette about Mr. Jobs insisting on prying the arrow keys and F-keys off a Mac keyboard before he'd autograph it Apple), I wonder if such oddities are "do it my way or else" pig-headedness, rather than oversights.

Another is the removal of alphabet index tabs from the AddressBook.app.

I would recommend converting them first. You can use a burn folder to write them to DVD. There's also an open source program called 'Burn' that does a good job as well. You can find the program at source forge.net.

Kung, please take this subject off line. It was not my intent to keep this going this long. I was only looking for a simple answer and for whatever reason, it became complex. My suggestion is that people not write these mystery messages that Mr. Rasmussen found so aghast and then leave at that. One of the group moms wanted this thread killed and I agree. Again, I am sorry that it has gone this far.

For anyone to begin to try to help you, you will have to give us some more information.

Who is your ISP? In other words, who brings the wire to your house?

Which email account? Give us the part after the @, since you used a gmail account for the list, we have no clue which email server is giving you problems.

Describe how you changed the password.

That will give us something to work with.

This behavior is the same at my home in OH, where I stay in VA, and at my
work at a school in VA, so I don't think that's the problem. The problem
exists on my wife's iMac, my iMac and it has been on my MacBook Pro until
this morning, when I reset the Apple ID. It then downloaded emails for the
first time since July. It's battery is now dead and the charger is at work.
For the moment it isn't a problem so from here on I will be talking only
about my iMac.

My email is @mac.com.

I followed directions on the apple site to change my Apple ID, since this
is supposed to be the same as the mobile me password. But the new ID won't
sign me into mobile me.

I went through the Mail Setup Assistant to reset the password but that
didn't help either. <http://www.apple.com/support/macosx/mailassistant/>

I've had the same problem for a long time. Neither Verizon (my provider) or Apple have ever really been able to consistently solve it. One accuses the other. I've heard that wiping out your keychain files might do it but I have not had the courage to try. Problem in your case is in the Incoming. What has solved my problem is to go into Preference> Accounts>and retype the password. If that fails, Restart. That usually does it. (Incidentally, if you have Verizon, they have an app. which can be downloaded from their site called VerizonHomeAgent. Very helpful but not necessarily all the answers.)

Well, now that you gave us a little more to work with, your right, it is not in the direction that I _was_ going.

I'm guessing the problem is that you have more than one Apple ID. They may look alike, to a point, but they are different accounts.

"since this is supposed to be the same as the mobile me password." This assumption maybe wrong. You may have more than one Apple ID. Also they just recently changed it so you need to use a full email address for the user field in iCloud and I believe also in MM to retrieve your email.

I have two Apple IDs currently, and I have had more in the past. Currently I have just two. One for iTunes and other uses, and another for email, formerly from MobileMe and currently from iCloud.

The email one takes a full email for the user field and the other takes just a username. The other uses just the username portion and has the same email contact info as the email one, but they are two different Apple ID accounts.

Clear as mud?!?! U bethca!

Had me confused and constantly changing passwords for years.

P.S.

The way I keep them straight in my head is to ask myself why I need it. If it is for email then I use the full email as the user and that password. If it is for anything else, I use just the username and the other password.

I like to keep my purchases separate from email. Right now, I believe it is not possible to merge accounts so you will have to figure out how to keep them straight in your head, if you have more than one Apple ID account. When I am in doubt, I keep them in a password safe with a good description of where it is used.

So far, those that have mentioned every having had a virus have all mentioned variations of the same virus, MDEF, Sevendust or 666.

I'll add one more infection of the same virus, from a floppy, IIRC, in Word or Excel document, probably in System 7, around 1998.

Arjun,

I sympathize with your frustration.

What do you want to accomplish in posting to this list?

Remember we are only users, located predominantly in North America. We do not represent Apple. We don't make or change Apple's policies.

Also remember that Apple does business differently in different countries because of local laws, and business practices.

You say you are in the third year of the Apple Protection Service, but do not qualify for phone support. That is a major difference of how it is in the US. When you purchase AppleCare here, part of it is phone support through the third year. Either way, you have been calling Apple on toll free numbers, and have been escalated to a third level Customer Relations Manager. For them to give out a email address is rare, and a direct phone number even rarer.

Not that I can help, but how long did you wait for the CR Manager to reply? A day, a week, two weeks? Obviously, your issue is not typical and may take longer to find a solution, otherwise it would have been repaired by now. Or are there other issues that you have not related to us, like signs of mis-use?

As to the redundancy of your data, that is not Apple's fault. They tell you that they are not responsible for the data on your device when they service it. If you did not make a good plan to back it up and keep new data separate from what was already on the computer while in for service, it is your fault.

You say you are working with a vendor, not authorized reseller or authorized service provider, if they were worth their price, they should have better connections and contacts with Apple to help you resolve this problem. Why aren't they the ones dealing with this issue on your behave? Maybe you should find a better vendor? If they are claiming to be authorized are they really?

If they are supposed to be supporting the social media company that you founded, I would be expecting more from them.

Aw, that could be the issue. Does Apple provide different Apple Protection Service to businesses versus end users?

Again I understand your frustration, but you are just complaining and not asking for anything that this list can help you with.

From all the parts you say have been replaced, the issue should have been resolved. There is something else going on here.

Brent
just an Apple customer

PS, I'm not trying to add to your frustration, but I find it mildly humorous that you have to speak English to a rep in Bangalore. Even though you are fluent in English.

And yes, from India we have to speak to an English speaking officer who is either based out of Bangalore (for the first level of service) and in case they are unable to resolve the issue, then the call is escalated to their regional office open at that hour - which these days seems to be like Singapore (and earlier it was Australia). My call has also been routed to Ireland in the past weeks when I have been running around in circles. At the second level of escalation, the service agents do communicate their email IDs and direct phone numbers, but the problem is, they are still apple employees, and I had a very bad experience this time.

Naturally, I had to take the unit in to an Authorised Repair Center, where the trained engineers looked into it, but were unable to solve the problem. Must mention that at all times, their behavior is very calm and they seem to be wanting to help the customer, but at the end of it, I didn't get the service I needed. When I got the unit back, it started giving trouble time and again, and this became a great cost, because every time I had to unload a whole bunch of data, and you can't believe it, but I have spent about two weeks now just trying to remove the redundant documents that have been created as a result of all the back ups for the service I have needed. This is a great cost to me.

Since we use quite a few computers in office, it is but necessary to work with a vendor who can advise on the best solutions we need to manage the small enterprise we have and expand infrastructure as we grow. But the back and forth that I've had to go to has been really demotivating and spoilt the entire ownership experience that everyone proudly shares as being an Apple user.

Are you talking about the Apple company or just some authorized Apple Service Provider? Those two are not the same. You also talk about (authorized) resellers in India which add to my confusion. Based on my European experience we have a large number of authorized resellers here who may or may not be also service providers. Those resellers may be large or small, good or bad, depending on each individual company. When I buy a new Mac I'll go to a certain computer shop downtown which happens to be an authorized Apple service provider too. If my MacBook Pro needs repair they will repair it there. It is not Apple that repairs it. *If* on the other hand I decide to buy my computer directly from Apple it's more complicated. To begin with, I'll pay more but they will deliver the computer directly to my house door. If it has to be repaired Apple will repair it but I am not sure exactly *where* the repair will take place. The reason why I don't know is because I try to stay away from Apple. Their products and service is far too expensive compared to the same products and service provided by the authorized providers. Also, when I phone them, I'm never sure with whom I'm exactly talking. I am in Germany and when I call them I will be talking to a German speaking woman who is based in Barcelona (Spain!). If I decide to buy a computer directly from Apple she will write down my order and make the necessary arrangements so it can be sent to me within few days … directly from China !!!!

Anna,

China is currently the main manufacture source for Apple, and has been for some time now. It is the source for your German Apple Reseller/ Service Provider.

While I can not tell you where a repair made by Apple (company) would be made, I can tell you it would be done by an Apple authorized technician, with authentic parts.

I can see that there might be a price difference because of established contracts and exchange rates. And I can see why you might prefer to deal with someone face to face and develop a rapport with a local company or individual.

In the US, a lot of the repairs are done in Texas, or 2200 miles or roughly 3500 kilometers from me. Amazingly enough, I brought my MBP in to a retail store to have the logic board replaced and it took 5 days for it to arrive back over a long 3 day weekend. It appeared that the service centers were closed over the weekend as the repair status web page was down for the whole time. I have other repairs come back in as little as 3 days. If it had not been an older model they would have had the logic board at the Apple Retail Store and done the replacement there. Thankfully, it was covered by my AppleCare and was free.

You, being in Germany, have figured out what works best for you.

It sounds like Arjun is using a vendor, his word, to support his company. So why is this vendor not handling this issue? I think he needs to find another vendor, with better contacts and relationship with Apple.

Backups, drive docks, and bare drives

This is a follow-up to my November 22 post about ordering an external
drive from Other World Computing and finding that it was built around
a Toshiba drive rather than the expected Hitachi.

I also spoke to my local Mac tech (who upgraded the internal HD in my
Mac a couple of years ago), and he said he keeps bare drives around
(for whatever purpose) and mounts one in a drive dock as needed. This
has the obvious advantage that I could buy the brand of drive I
wanted and not have to hassle with mounting it in an enclosure, or
paying him to do it. I'd had this image of unmounted hard drives as
rather fragile, so I asked him how I should protect the bare drive on
the way from home to the safe deposit box (and vice versa), and he
suggested a ziploc bag. So maybe bare drives aren't so delicate after
all? I can imagine wanting an external drive in an enclosure if I had
a large amount of data (say, photos) that I wanted to move off the HD
but still access often, but that isn't my situation.

The tech also said that given the longevity of drives these days, he
figures on replacing any given drive pre-emptively every 3 years. I
can see that for my internal drive, which runs 24/7/365, but what
about a backup that that sees maybe 90 minutes of use a week? Thanks.

Howdy.

I've posted on this same topic several times and given my experience.

I have two drive docks connected to an eSATA card.

To protect the bare hard drives I found, after days of fruitless
searching, a great and very inexpensive solution.

The Container Store, a chain in the US, has a series of clear plastic
photograph storage boxes.

One size, for 6 inch x 4 inch photographs, is an almost perfect fit for
a bare hard drive.

I trim a small piece of foam rubber for one end, the drive fits inside
the photo box and is kept firmly in position, photo box has a lid that
snaps shut, box is clear so the drive can be labeled, the boxes are
designed to stack.

Last time I bought these at The Container Store they were $1.49 USD
each on sale.

The photograph storage box is made by Iris USA, Inc., (my lord,
something actually manufactured in the US!).

Iris makes a larger storage box that has slots for several of the 6x4
individual boxes.

Also check a Container Store in person.

I use a Dymo embossing label maker and put the drive name on each bare
hard drive so the name is visible through the plastic of the storage
box.

Will send you a photo directly.
