Mine (4S) also says exactly that, Otto: "Automatically sync".

That does NOT mean you cannot start a *manual* wireless sync without being plugged in.

Text tone oddity

Posted by: "sharonx9" sharonx9@gmail.com sharonx1972

I have an iPhone 4 running iOS5. I bought 2 text tones thru iTunes. When I
use them on the 2 contacts, they work well except when the phone is locked.
Then there is no sound at all from them.

If I have my phone unlocked or my message app open I get sound. When phone
is locked all I get is a notification of the text but no sound. Works on all
other text tones even Ones I've made but not the two I bought.

I can't figure this one out.

New 4s over heating

My new 4s gets very hot when using some apps, particularly a gps app. I
checked the discussion forums , this seems to be a problem with many
others with no solution. The apple tech site shows a warning that will
appear if your device gets too hot to use, but I still worry that it is
damaging the unit.

All iPhones get hot when the GPS receiver is on. Unless youre doing something to stop the air circulation around it, there shouldnt be a problem. Remember, Apple is warranting these for a year (you did get the AppleCare Plus didnt you?) or two with AppleCare. If they were burning out left and right, Apple would be out of business by now.

I use GPS with Google, Telnav and MapQuest without any overheating.

You might want to take it to an Apple store to get it replaced.

I paid a fee to reserve a new iPhone with Rogers (the original Canadian iPhone licensee) and as of Monday last week, I was literally #1 on the waiting list. Then on Friday, my order was "being processed". Today, I got an email from Rogers saying that my phone is being shipped to my local dealer, with a UPS tracking number.

When I checked the tracking number on the UPS web site, it only tells me that "a label has been printed" and that my order will take up to four days.

(But on the good side, they did say that my $40 reservation fee will be credited on my next month's Rogers bill.)

UBS: Apple to ship 42.5 million iPhones in Q4

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com boulware0224

Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:17 pm (PDT)

Has anyone who pre-ordered AFTER they sold out of the initial run
received a shipping notification or updated time frame? I checked with
Apple Stores and they are selling out of whatever they get in each day
almost immediately.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: UBS: Apple to ship 42.5
million iPhones in Q4 via BGR: The Three Biggest Letters In Tech by
Todd Haselton on 10/24/11

Spurred by the iPhone 4S launch, several analysts expect sales of
Apple's iPhone lineup to explode during the fourth quarter of this
year. "The timing of the 70 [international] launches could have some
impact on sales ahead of the launch, the US/International split, and
hence, our estimates look conservative," UBS analyst Maynard Um said in
a recent note to investors. "A similar 27.5 percent U.S. / 72.5 percent
international split from this quarter would imply 42.5 million units in
CY4Q or an upside of 14.5 million iPhones." Apple shipped 17.1 million
iPhones during the fiscal fourth quarter, and the lower-than-expected
sales were blamed on rumors and anticipation ahead of the iPhone 4S
launch. Um predicts a huge turnaround for Apple in the fourth calendar
quarter, and of course he isn't alone. The "resoundingly successful"
iPhone 4S launch is expected to result in a big holiday season for the
Cupertino-based company, Ticonderoga Securities said in a recent note.

I just the chance to update my iPhone 4 to iOS5. While playing around getting the feel of things Iv'e noticed a couple of features mentioned in the iOS 5 Video missing.
1) There is no camera icon on the lock screen.
2) Safari has no tabs, it works as before for switching.

Did these change from the beta versions or is there some settings I could look at?

1. Double press home button rapidly to show camera icon

2. Tabbed browsing is an iPad only feature (not iPhone or iPod Touch).

Piper: As far as I know tabs in iOS 5 safari are only on the iPad.

To see the camera icon on your lock screen on your iPhone, in lock screen mode double tap the home button.

Slow Reaction to Typing/Tapping

Posted by: "jiminmanjr" jiminmanjr@yahoo.com jiminmanjr

Mon Oct 24, 2011 1:49 pm (PDT)

Ever since I upgraded to the iOS5 on my 3GS, I've noticed some extended pauses/holds while typing on my phone. After using my thumbs and fingers for a couple years, my iPhone typing skills are pretty decent. However, in the last week or so there are times when it will be 5-10 characters behind - it will hold while I type, and keep "clicking" as I hit the letters, but they will not display as I go.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

I have this EVERY time I open Safari to type a URL. I don't have the issue
in the search box or anywhere else, only in the URL field and I have it on
every device (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2). The only thing I can think of
is that there is some cache or too many book marks or something that is
being searched with every keystroke .... but I can't find anything.

Mine is usually in typing in a text box on a website but can vary where it happens.

I've tried the hard resets, closing all apps, etc but it continues.

Default Map Program - Multiple Routes?

Posted by: "jiminmanjr" jiminmanjr@yahoo.com jiminmanjr

Mon Oct 24, 2011 1:50 pm (PDT)

I have upgraded my 3GS to the iOS5.

This weekend I did some long travel - in the car for nearly eight hours over two days. I relied on my iPhone Maps to get me to my destinations - which it did. However, since the upgrade, the Maps app shows three alternative routes... and I assumed taking Route One would be the fastest. Instead, Route One always was a longer route (according to people at my destinations)... once I was rerouted by about 15 minutes on a two-lane road, instead of a nearby interstate.

Is there a way to tweak the settings of Maps to do fastest route, all highway, etc? I don't want to drive 20 miles again on a two-lane road with stop lights every quarter-mile! :)

Thanks!

When you select a route, a box pops up to give you the distance and estimated time.

iPhone 4S a 'Bluetooth Smart Ready' device as Bluetoot

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com boulware0224

Mon Oct 24, 2011 2:20 pm (PDT)

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/ZaJ_0nlaBcE/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iPhone 4S a 'Bluetooth
Smart Ready' device as Bluetooth 4.0 gets rebranded via 9to5Mac by
Jordan Kahn on 10/24/11

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced in a press
release (via MacRumors) that 'Bluetooth 4.0′ will now be branded as
"Bluetooth Smart Ready" and "Bluetooth Smart" to create "awareness
around compatibility for new devices" (such as the iPhone 4S) that
support the standard.

The press release explains:

"The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced two new brand
extensions to its globally recognized logo today in an effort to create
consumer awareness around compatibility for new devices implementing
Bluetooth v4.0 – the Bluetooth Smart Ready trademark and the Bluetooth
Smart trademark. Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are phones, tablets, PCs
and TVs that sit at the center of a consumer's connected world and
implement a Bluetooth v4.0 dual mode radio. Bluetooth Smart devices are
sensor-type devices like heart-rate monitors or pedometers that run on
button-cell batteries and were built to collect a specific piece of
information. Bluetooth Smart devices include only a single-mode low
energy Bluetooth v4.0 radio."

So in other words, the "Bluetooth Smart Ready" trademark signifies a
device such as the iPhone 4S, that is ready to interact with "Bluetooth
Smart" peripherals such as heart-rate monitor or smart watch. CMO of
Bluetooth Special Interest Group Suke Jawanda explains further:

"Consumers can look at new Bluetooth Smart Ready devices the same way
they would a 3D ready TV – having the TV is just the first part of the
puzzle, you need glasses and content in order to really experience 3D.
Once consumers have a Bluetooth Smart Ready device, like the new iPhone
4S, they can continue connecting to existing Bluetooth devices and are
also ready to experience the new world of Bluetooth Smart peripheral
devices that will carry the Bluetooth Smart logo."

Hopefully this effort to "create consumer awareness" will encourage
more manufacturers into adopting the standard for peripherals and
accessories that aren't currently taking full advantage of the 4S's
Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities
